19 Nov 00 - 07:10 PM (#343635) Subject: The Mad Puck Goat From: GUEST,corvos@localline.com I'm looking for English lyrics to "An Poc Ar Buile" (The Mad Puck Goat). The only recording I've heard of this song is on The Chieftains' "Water From the Well" CD and as you might guess, it isn't in English. |
20 Nov 00 - 12:35 PM (#344013) Subject: Lyr Add: MY BUCK BILLY GOAT From: GUEST I've never heard An Poc Ar Buile in English. Here's an old Irish song about a buck goat:
Oh, I'm a lonely widow. Meself and my daughter,
When he died, he will'd over the land and the shanty,
Wid horses he slept ev'ry night in the stable.
He could butt down a fence, oh, so gentle and aisy.
His whiskers were long, like the wandering Jewman.
'Twas a blast from the quarry that did strike his shoulder
He'd fight like a trooper. His horns were like sabers.
Oh, his right name was Willie, but I called him Billy.
His white hairs were silken. They hung long and drooping.
All the dogs and the cats sure they'd never come near him. |
20 Nov 00 - 01:33 PM (#344059) Subject: RE: The Mad Puck Goat From: Robby I've never heard an English version either. Both the Chieftans, and the Clancys/Makem in an early LP from the '60s, sing it in Gaelic. I do know a song about Paddy McGinty's Goat in English, as performed by Anna McGoldrick, and then there's the song about the Darby Ram, but a ram is not a goat, so I guess I can't help much on this. |
20 Nov 00 - 02:52 PM (#344109) Subject: Lyr Add: THE MAD PUCK GOAT From: Jimmy C Here is the english version, taken from Comic Songs of Cork and Kerry by James Healy. THE MAD PUCK GOAT - english translation of AN POC AR BUILE
As I set out with me pike in hand
He chased me over bush and weed
There was ne'er a rock with no passage through
When the sergeant stood in Rochestown
In Dingle the following afternoon
Chorus

The first song you hear in the video is The Mad Puck Goat, performed by The Chieftans and guests Seamus Begley, Daithi O Se and Laurence Courtney. It'll knock your socks off! |
