Lyr Here: Joseph Taylor, Unto Brigg Fair

I have now put all the words of the songs on the LP Unto Brigg Fair, mostly sung by Joseph Taylor, https://mainlynorfolk.info/joseph.taylor/records/untobriggfair.html.

Many of the songs are available elsewhere, for example in Tony Barrand's pages.

These transcriptions have been checked against what Joseph Taylor and his colleagues sing.

I hope this is a useful resource.

Thanks Gaz. I'm surprised that Brigg Fair has not made it into the DT yet. Perhaps the words should be posted in this thread to speed it on its way there?

OK, Ed, cleverclogs :0) - now tell us how you found it??

It is not in the alphabetical list, nor does it come up in the DT Lyrics search or the forum search.

Noreen,
the mysteries of search have puzzled even the elves here. Enter 'Brigg fair' into the Digitrad Search and you get no hit, enter the same two words into the Digitrad and Forum Search you get the song you want. I have no explanation at all why it is not in the alphabetical list.

Noreen,

I just searched for 'brigg' in the blue DT box. No idea why 'brigg fair' doesn't work, or isn't in the index.

Note that I was referring to all of the songs on the record called UNTO Brigg Fair, not just the song called Brigg Fair. sigh, Gaz

I live 10 miles from Brigg, and we have some excellent folk sessions around here. Cyril Tawney was a great folk traditionalist who collected hundreds of songs, including 'Brigg Fair', and I suspect the UNTO bit of the thread may be part of that song. Anyway, come and be part of the most anarchic, least clique-ridden session you'll ever go to at the Sloop Inn in Barton on Humber, North Lincs, England. It's EVERY Tuesday night, and the sandwiches are great. Ask SKIPJACK and BOXETTE! Keep strummin', squeezin', suckin', and bashin'.

As far as I know, Cyril is an "is" rather than a "was."

But I've never heard of him being a major _collector_ of rural English songs, and I'd like to know where it's documented that he collected "Brigg Fair" and what the version is. Unless of course he "collected" it off Joseph Taylor's recording made by Percy Grainger in 1905 or so, which is what I did.

Cyril did collect songs, he told me in person about one of his collecting jaunts in the south west.

From goldilox;

A Mayflower Garland (1970); A project album. Songs collected by Cyril Tawney, with Tom Paley on guitar and banjo. The 12 songs are interspersed with readings from Plimouth Plantation by Gary Watson. The Mayflower sailed 350 years prior to the release of this record. Extensive sleeve notes.

The Roud Index has 54 entries citing Cyril Tawney as collector, but there is no Brigg Fair amongst them.

Nancy Kerr sings Fol the Day-O, 'like a Joseph Taylor melody'.

What a beautiful voice Nancy has - saw Nancy and James at the Unison Club, Lincoln, several years ago and was knocked sideways by both her singing and playing. And I’d give up my pension for James’ Sobell Bouzouki! A superb duo - love ‘em!
