BS: Eggnog

Ok so I'll admit it....I was watching Sabrina The Teenage Witch at the weekend (it's on right after the Rugrats, which I love, and I couldn't be bothered to turn over) and they had a christmas show on in which they were drinking something called eggnog.....what is it and how is it made, please?

Eggnog is essentially eggs, cream, sugar, nutmeg (and perhaps other spices), and some sort of liquor (whiskey I think is the usual culprit), blended.

Here in the grocery stores at this time of year they sell cartons of stuff they call eggnog, which is sweetened, spiced, egged milk. Of course they pasteurize the eggs. It's dreadful stuff.

Here are a couple of recipes online for the real thing:

*gasp* you've never had eggnog? ohmygad!

There are more recipes for eggnog then there are for plum pudding - and some take almost as long to make! The very best eggnog is so thick as to be almost a mousse; alcoholic enough; (but never too much) and gently dusted with nutmeg and/or cinnamon.

basically eggs/cream(milk, cream, whipped cream,or some combination of two or more of them) /alcoholic beverage of choice (usually rum or whisky). Sugar to taste, and as I said before, a dusting of cinnamon and/or nutmeg. Some peole add clove, vanilla.....have even had it with cardamon

And you get a thick, sweet moustache and your nose tingles from the nugmeg and the alcohol and you feel all warm inside... it's a beautiful thing!

Well you guys beat me to it. Here I was searching for recipes and watching my computer crash as half the holiday sites have cheesy music in the background and before I get done there you've got recipes up there already. Eggnog is nice at parties, especially when you leave the rum bottle out for people to add the amount they want to the drink. If you serve it in pretty cut glass or crystal punch glasses (Martha Stewart probably does this) then you can be sure that none of your guests is ignoring the eggnog and going for the straight rum. Naturally I don't have any friends who would do that which is why I have never invested in a punchbowland matching glasses. Cough, hummm, cough cough.

It's a horrible concoction that should be avoided at all cost. Unless of course you LIKE eating raw eggs.

My brother makes to die for egg nog. It always grossed me out with all the raw eggs but the rum and bourbon and whatever else is in there sterilizes it and stupifies me. So all is well.

I LOVE EGGNOG. I admit, though, I usually buy storebought just because I don't generally have time to make it meself. Put enough run in it, a little whipped cream on top, a little nutmeg, and go to town. Think I'll have some when I get home!

And here is the Irish version, a reasonable approximation of Irish cream:

10 oz whiskey (Bushmill's is best)
1 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup cream
3 eggs
3 tablespoons chocolate syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon coconut flavoring

dump it all in a blender and puree until smooth. Then go out and buy larger clothes, 'cause you will need them after a few bottles of this stuff.

I never realised until I was a teenager that eggnog was meant as a Christmas treat, to me it was a part of Harvest time on the farm. My Grandma used to make up a big batch of eggnog every day during harvest(here in Kansas that's July-Augustish)put it ice cold in a thermos and take it to my Grandpa who was out in the field on the combine...apparently he loved the stuff (minus alchohol of course) and my Grandma figured, wierd as it was, that all the protein from the eggs made a good lunch extra to keep her hardworking man nourished on a hot summer's day!

Morty, what you get is a lot like Advocaat, but I like the idea of "liquor of choice"... ts probably no worse than Liz's Sloe Gin...

For years all I ever knew was the store-bought eggnog so I prefer it to the real stuff. Safer too.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a barbarian!

Try putting butterscotch schnaps in your eggnog. Deeeelicious.

Actually - I used to have an eggnog for breakfast most days - faster then cooking and cheaper then instant breakfasts....tho' mom wouldn't let me put anything in it to give it a "kick"

Mom used to make it for me for breakfast too MMario, without the kick though. I never liked eating in the morning and she figured it would give me SOMETHING substantial to last me till lunch. I still remember the look on one teacher's face when she asked everybody in class what we had had for breakfast.

No really BG, it's great! Stop by the house this season. I have some schnaps left over from last year. I make you a nice butterscotch eggnog.

I think a butterscotch eggnog would be incredible - especially right about NOW.

Isn't it about time for the tavern to open up for the holiday season?

Naemanson, I am On My Way!

Then there's boiled custard. One of the gentlemen who volunteers at my office makes a mean boiled custard every Christmas. But apparently it's a cheater version - I wouldn't really know - he uses Jello pudding mix in it! But dang, it's good!

Kimmers, that recipe sounds absolutely divoon...

I don't worry a whole lot about the raw egg thing. Salmonella in clean, fresh eggs is supposed to be less common out here on the West Coast; certainly raw eggs are safer than raw chicken (yuk). I think that the salmonella bacteria would find it hard to proliferate in a mixture containing that much alcohol. That's a good excuse to slop in a few more ounces of Bushnell's... gotta make sure that the final booze content is around 20 percent to inhibit bacterial growth!

I would only serve one of these raw-egg concoctions to healthy adults, however... no frail elderly or immunocompromised people. Or pregnant women, or children, not that they should be drinking this stuff anyway!

Raw eggs have a better track record that unpasteurized milk, at any rate. We've had a lot of trouble out here with E. coli disease from raw milk (gotta get the medical angle in here somehow). It's all a matter of choosing your risks wisely. Will I take a tiny risk of nasty but self-limited food poisoning from something as delectable as homemade Irish Cream? You betcha! Would I give it to someone else without warning them? Nope. And will I risk more serious illness from raw milk or undercooked hamburger? Not on your life; it ain't worth it.

The Washington State Egg Commission's proud boast is that salmonella has NEVER been detected in their eggs. Dunno how they do it, but I feel pretty confident drinking eggnog out here.

I'm a store-bought eggnog fan. They sell it in little pint bottles of it this time of year, like pop. Whenever someone offers me home-made eggnog, it's got alcohol in it. Yuck. :P

Advocaat is an eggnog drink. I understand it was called that because it was popular with continental lawyers.

Eggnog doesn't require alcohol, and as long as it's minus it, I love it.

Just for the record, I grew up with raw milk, raw hamburger, and raw eggs (but not as often, they're slimy!) and I'm just fine. Choose your sources, as well.
