From: GUEST,Melanthe Alexian (parakeet@netbird.com) Thirty years ago I heard an amazing Irish carol sung by a young women's choir. The solo lyric depicts Mary singing to the infant Jesus. I have only partial lyrics and have no idea what the name of the song is. It was described to me as dating from the mediaeval days when the Irish were saving civilisation. The tune has a flavour of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"... slow, Judaic and full of restrained emotion. Shoon-a-shoon, I sing no psalm, little man, although I am out of David's house and clan... Hush-a-hoo, whirring of wings... Hush-a-hoo, stirring of strings.. though in slumber deep, his ears can hear my song of sleep. If you could put me onto the right track I would appreciate it. This song has been driving me nuts for years. |

It is on a multi-LP collection I have which includes recordings by the Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem and their families. I can't remember if Peg Powers or one of the other women may be the particular artist for the song, but her Enlgish version is: SEOTIN SEO (Shoheen Sho) Oh, who is this a-lying here So gently at the door of my heart? To and fro like clouds at night, I'll softly rock your cradle. Shoheen Sho Ho. Lu-lay-low-lu. The yellow moon rides in the sky, Dreaming falling over the earth. Hush, Allana, hush, be still, The world is silently sleeping. Shoheen Sho Ho. Lu-lay-low-lu. That is the extent of the song on the LP that I have. The rhythm of some of the lyrics originally posted by Melanth Alexian appear to suggest the melody also used for Seotin Seo, but I have no way of verifying this. It was called "The Virgin's Slumber Song" but is not the well known "Maria Wiegenlied" that goes by that name. These are the words.
