Help: Portsmouth (Hants, UK) contacts

I am suddenly transferred for a few months from Washington DC to near Portsmouth in England (Titchfield is where I will be working, but I don't know where I will be living).

Can anyone point me to some folksinging in the area? I know that when the Boarding Party toured in around 1983, we had a magic evening in a club in Portsmouth, but I have long forgotten the identity of it.

Seems like there ought to be chance to sing a shanty or two in that vicinity (yes, I know, no shanties in the Royal Navy, but still...)

hello David, welcome back to Blighty. Ther is plenty of singing in the area. First stop Portsmouth Monday night, call Sooty Broughton (ex-RN) on 01243 37 74 99. He has a good club and will be able to fill you in on the rest of the happenings around. Enjoy!

David, for what it's worth the folkclubs of Portsmouth and Havant (neaby) were my first encounters with this type of music in any meaningful way. It was these clubs that brought me to the love of Folk Music, the sing-a-rounds, the Sunday Morning sessions... I hope you have a great time, like I did (albeit several years ago).

Paul

Hampshire Arts Pages has some good links.

SCOFF also. A subsciption the Folk-on-Tap magazine is well worth it and will ensure that you will miss nothing folk related, in the area.

Thanks, everone - just the information I was looking for! I'll be arriving Monday morning so I'll have most of a week before I can get there.

The name Sooty Broughton rings a faint bell in my memory (which was always bad and getting worse in my old age) - Has he been doing this a long time? I ask because I would like to remember which venue it was the Boarding Party sang in (~1983/4) - the choruses were wonderful, even better in the second half when a bunch of Morris Men arrived to help out, and if I am recalling correctly, Tom Lewis was there and sang (maybe the first time) 'Survivor Leave', and during the day we actually saw an aircraft carrier returned from the Falklands war, with some visible battle damage.

For anyone who wants to contact me while I am over there, I am not sure how much browsing I will be able to do on mudcat (it's the company's laptop and I don't have an ISP there), but I will be able to pick up my e-mail sent to dov@pobox.com.
