The "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page is always the best thing to try first, though unfortunately it seems to come and go... however, it's working at the moment.  If you were to type dogger bank into it, it would find you the song, which I posted in another thread quite recently.  Here is a short-cut to it in case the Search is broken again by the time you get back:  The Dogger Bank

From: GUEST,George Henderson - Nenagh Singers Circle

I got this from the late and great Peter Bellamy:

THE DOGGER BANK

Sailing o'er the Dogger Bank, wasn't it a treat?
The wind a-blowing East Northeast, we had to give her sheet.
You should ha' seen us rally, the wind a-blowing free,
A passage from the Dogger Bank to Great Grimsby.

CHORUS: So watch your twinker. She's a proper Ju-be-Ju.
Give her her sheets and let her rip. We're the boys to see you through.
You should ha' seen us rally, the wind a-blowing free,
A passage from the Dogger Bank to Great Grimsby.

The Captain he's a son of a gun. he loves a drop of good ale.
The first mate he's a rogue to respect; been seen in many's the gaol.
The third hand he's a bushranger. he comes from the African isle,
And take a look at the poor old cook. it gets the bugger wild. CHO.

We're the boys to make the noise when we come home from sea.
We get right drunk and we roll on the floor and we have a jubilee.
We get right drunk and full of beer and we roll all over the floor,
And when the rent it is all spent, we'll go to sea for more. CHO.

So watch your twinker as down the street she came,
With high heeled shoes and painted toes 'cause Jenny is on the game,
She is one of those flash girls can't you cut the shine,
She can do a double shuffle on the Knickerbocker line. CHO.

Ah, yes, a few differences from the version I posted, and an extra verse.  Do you happen to know if Peter got that from Sam Larner?

Sorry Don't know. but they hail from the same area so I suppose he did.

I thought it was from Bob Roberts. Tim Laycock sings it with the New Scorpion Band (and without).

Is that a trad. song? It's in the radio ballad 'Singing the Fishing', and I've also got a version by Dave Goulder. Any more info on its history? (PS: Wolfgang, this was the one I was asking you about.)

Thanks, Guest. I only looked at it afterwards. Another question: I haven't compared the words above to what Dave Goulder sings, but I remember he also uses the sounds Ju-be-ju (or something). Can anyone explain what this is supposed to mean? Thanks!

See 'Jump up on the juberju' in Joanna Colcord's book, the name of which escapes me. I know it's on the shelf here, but since I've just come back from the pub, I'll leave it 'til tomorrow!

Thanks, Guest. Unfortunately there are no Joanna Colcord books on my shelf, and they're somewhat hard to get in Germany, so I'm still asking for help.

Thanks, Susanne (and Malcolm), that was one of the songs on 'Singing the fishing' I had not identified yet.

Gary & Vera Aspey used to do this one years ago.

The first line of chorus they sang was a little different from,

'So watch your twinker, She's a proper Ju-be-Ju'

It went 'So watch your twigger ,She's a proper Ju-be-Ju'

There is a complete version in the Bodleian Library although, unfortunately, a date is not given. The broadside contains more verses than either the Peter Bellamy or Sam Larner versions. If I get time I'll transcribe it .... meanwhile it can be viewed here .....

The Grimsby Fisherman

I'm a rarum tarum fisherman that sail from Grimsby town
And in the "Lion " and "Kitching" I've had many up and down
But when I've spent me stocker-bait and had a little spree
Then away I crack on board a smack to plow the stormy sea

Chorus
Then watch us , twig us , we're a proper juba jue
Give her a sheet and let her rip, we're the boys to put her through
You ought to see her rally and the wind a blowing free
On the passage from the Fisher-bank to Great Grimsby

Our Skipper's a Shanghai rooster that loves a drop of good ale
Our second additions a rip-stone pippin, that's seen the inside of a jail
Our Third-hand's been a bushranger, the Dickey as came from the diles
And to judge from his looks, I'm certain our Cook is a native of African wilds

From the Captain down to the caili? Cook, we're a Vandedecken crew
A Liverpool Irish packet rat and a son of a Kangeroo
We've got one of the Forty Thieves, a Bendigo Birmingham hoop
And in every ring-tail Monkey-man you'd recognise our cook

When we get a trip on board, for Grimsby town we steer
The only thing that's in our head is Mrs Sargeant's beer
We crack on all the canvas boys, and battle through every gale
Until the Spurm? is left astern, and then we take in sail

Sailing over the Dogger-Bank, isn't it a treat
And the wind being in the E.N.E., we had to give her sheet
We were running wing and wing until we sighted Cleethorpes pier
And when the voyage was ended we're the boys to gobble the beer

We're the boys to make a noise when we come home from sea
Like Pell Mells Swells we booze the girls and cause a jubilee
We'd dance and shout and halloo out and roll about the floor
Until our rent is all spent and then we book for more

nutty, I would guess that your 2 question marks are
1 I would think that would be "galley cook", and
2 Spurn point and its light ship at the mouth of the Humber you would come round the lightship coming from The Dogger and bear up for Grimsby, they would be cutting it a bit fie if they only stated reducing sail as they came round it, I think, ask Skipjack!
I would guess the Van Der Decken crew comes from the Legendary skipper of the Flying Dutchman!!!
