03 Dec 00 - 12:51 PM (#350730) Subject: I have an IP number - but who it is? From: Zebedee This question comes from a thread in the help forum (click here)about the Zone Alarm software. I use zone alarm and sometimes get messages that a certain server has tried to access my computer. I'm sure that the vast majority of these aren't malicious, but it'd be nice to know their origin. I've tried using the 'ping' program included in Windows 95, but always get a 'connection timed out' response. Any thoughts? Ed |

From: catspaw49 I've been using Z-A for a long time now and at first I was amazed, then curious, but at this point, I get so many hits it'd be a project to trace them all. Like Jeri said, a lot are from the AOL/Yahoo Big Net Groups....Some on shopping, etc. I'm just happy that Z-A works! Spaw |

03 Dec 00 - 01:08 PM (#350740) Subject: RE: BS: I have an IP number - but who it is? From: Zebedee Thanks for that Jeri. I tried it with the Mudcat IP (from the Zone Alarm help thread) and sure enough came up with ONSTAGE MEDIA. Now you and I know that Onstage Media is Max's company. If I hadn't known that the information wouldn't help. It wouldn't have told me that it came from mudcat.org. Is there any way of knowing that? Thanks again Ed

03 Dec 00 - 02:06 PM (#350759) Subject: RE: BS: I have an IP number - but who it is? From: Jeri Type the IP number into the address block instead of the URL for the web page. Although I should have thought of this before (duh), it doesn't always work, and the ARIN site can tell you who's responsible for the IP number. |

03 Dec 00 - 02:44 PM (#350769) Subject: RE: BS: I have an IP number - but who it is? From: Jeri Sorry, Ed. I had no idea what you'd tried, and I had no idea you'd get the password thingie. I also wrote "it doesn't always work." When you type in the IP number you gave in the Help Forum, you do get that message. My guess is Max might have *part* of Mudcat there - as in the actual database. If you change the last number to a "5" so it's 204.108.149.105, you get Mudcat.

Sometimes things really are too simple for people to think of, and I'm good at the simple stuff...sometimes. Oh well, maybe someone else has an idea. |
