We have had a lot of discussion on this one. It is Scottish style lament, composed in 1982 by Jay Unger, a Jewish Boy from the Bronx. For an abc/midi of the tune, see Click here.

The other song approved by Jay Ungar was written by Cleo Laine and her husband, which she performed.

A tune that is surprisingly similar is "Margaret Ann Robertson". Now I'm not saying that's where Mr. Unger got it but it may have been an inspiration. As I've said before, I adore every scratch of music Mr. Unger has ever done.

Does anyone know where I can get bagpipe sheet music for this tune? Many thanks to anyone who can assist.

Murdo:

You'll have a job - it has a range of two octaves. Depends what sort of pipes you want to play it on, of course, but without considerable adaptation it's nearly unplayable on most. And then it doesn't sound the same.

I play it in the written key (D Major) on a Low G whistle , in One Sharp to get the tune without any octave jumps . To play it on Scottish pipes , would take a fair amount of arranging .

It fits easily on a 41 note keyboard in the key that the original 'official' sheet music was in - D. On one of my smaller P/As it can fit on a smaller Kb, but only if I transpose to G. Incidentally, some Kbs are 'pitched' differently - not all run from same start note to same finish note, even if they have the same number of keys - there are very good musical reasons for this. If you have less than 2 octaves, it won't fit, unless you can 'octave jump' somewhere in it.

For non-Kb instruments, much the same applies, except if they are diatonic - you will have to ensure that you can play it in one of the 'native' keys, just trying to squeeze the top and bottom notes into the physical range won't work.
