Cyril Tawney Cassettes Available in U.S

If I weren't as impressed by Cyril Tawney as I am, I guess I'd consider this a crass commercial announcement.

All eight of Cyril's cassettes--Sally Free and Easy, Down the Hatch, In the Naval Spirit, Man of Honour, Round the Buoy,Little Boy Billee, Seamen Bold and Sailor's Delight are now available from CAMSCO Music, I'm proud to say.

They're English imports, which, between taxes and shipping, makes them higher-priced than US cassettes: they sell for $12 (US) apiece.

If you're at all familiar with Cyril's work, there nothing for me to say. If you're new here, Mr. Tawney is a fine, fine singer who has composed such gems as Grey Funnel Line, Sally Free and Easy, Sammy's Bar, The Oggy Man, Diesel and Shale, FIve Foot Flirt and a frighteningly long list of others. He was (and is) a fine singer, and was clearly one of the Most influential figures of the English Revival of the 60s.

He has no CDs as yet (I'm working on that).

Dear Mr. Greenhaus,

I read in Living Tradition the Mr. Tawney had recorded a couple cassettes of traditional songs about four or five years ago. Are those two included in the aforementioned eight? You can e-mail me at Coopnel@aol.com if you would prefer. Thanks.

I shocked, sir, shocked at the crass commercialism that runs rampant through the sacred halls of the Mudcat. I can only say this in response!

Excuse me, Mr. Greenhaus, but how does one go about contacting the prestigious firm of CAMSCO? Is there a web site? Is it possible to order these tapes electronically or do we use the traditional method of placing a mail order with a check enclosed? In that case what might the address be?

And, may I copy the original post of this thread and include it in e-mails to friends who might also purchase copies of these tapes? (I think I know the answer to this one!)

You reach camsco at 800/548-3688 (FOLK) OR by phone at

800/548-FOLK (3655)

Camsco takes checks, money orders, VISA, Master or Discover. Even cash, but we don't recommend mailing it.

Sally Free and Easy and Man of Honour consist of songs written by Tawney (maritime and non-maeritime respectively). Sailor's Delight consists of trad. sea songs, Seamen Bold is trad. material dealing with sea battles. Little Boy Billee is mostly trad. aimed at children, Round the Buoy and In the Naval Spirit consist of Royal Navy songs Collected by Tawney, Down The Hatch is Cyril's most recent (1994) a collection of drinking songs.

all you folks in America, get hold of those Tawney tapes right now. They are great, full of terrific material. Cyril is our senior folk professional. In his long career he has done fine work in collecting traditional songs, written the definitive work on songs of the Royal Navy, and as we all know, written 'Sally Free & Easy' and all those great songs. He is a performer of superlative skill who really loves his music. A great bloke all round. The tapes should go like hot cakes. Grab them now.

I came across this website today - it tells you how to get Cyril Tawney cassettes and CD's from Rosemary Tawney in the UK. Dick Greenhaus most probably still has some CD's and cassettes for US customers.
