Does anyone know where i can get the lyrics for a song called White Dove? i have heard Bob Dylan sing it. the chorus goes something like:

White dove in morning/mourning sorrow the willows will hang their heads I'll live my life in sorrow now that mother and daddy are dead

i would love the lyrics; thanks for your help; Jawbone

Found on several websites, including  Gary's Collection of Bluegrass song lyrics:

WHITE DOVE

(Carter Stanley)

In the deep rolling hills of old Virginia,
There's a place that I love so well;
Where I spent many days of my childhood,
In the cabin where we loved to dwell.

Refrain:

White dove will mourn in sorrow,
The willows will hang their heads.
I live my life in sorrow
Since mother and daddy are dead.

We were all so happy there together
In our peaceful little mountain home,
But the Savior needs angels up in heaven;
Now they sing around the great white throne.

As the years roll by I often wonder
If we will all be together someday;
And each night as I wander through the graveyard,
Darkness finds me trying to pray.

Other sources have these variant lines:

In the beautiful hills of old Virginia There's a place I love so well...

I'll live my life in sorrow...

Darkness finds me where I kneel to pray.

No clues as to the tune.

Malcolm

You'll find the Stanley Brothers original recording of this on a glorious CD that collects together their Columbia recordings: The Stanley Brothers & The Clinch Mountain Boys 1949-52' Bear Family BCD 15564. Indispensible for any lover of bluegrass.

Gene, I have several albums of Martin, but none with 'White Dove'. His version would have to be something to be better than the Stanleys with Pee Wee Lambert which I reckon is exquisite. I think Carter's languid, dolorous lead vocals on songs like this are among the lasting treasures of bluegrass.

Guest, thanks. That title rang a bell with me and I went searching further. I do have that album - it was missfiled with Benny Martin LPs. It's quite a while since I've delved into my vinyl bluegrass collection. I'll give it a listen. How do you like the matching hat and suit he's wearing on the cover?
