The one song that sticks out had some of the following lyrics(talking about potatoes): Are you diggin em Dillon? Are you diggin em deep? Are you piling em Dillon in a nice big heap? Oh, I'm diggin em said dillon. I got enough to fill me boat, but I'd be diggin em more if it wasn't for you, you rotten stinkin goat. Do you know this song, artist, or the rest of the lyrics? |

It's about Dillon's Kerry Puck goat.......while Dillon was digging "spuds" the priest was passing and heard Dillon cursing and told him off but Dillon thought it was the goat talking! It was popularized by Joan Morrissey on an LP about 1972. The LP was, if my memory serves me right, an Audat or an Arc record and, although it was a hugely popular hit within Newfoundland, probably wasn't distributed much outside Newfoundland. The song is based on a jocular legend from Mobile (pronounced MOE-ble) on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The legend is that a man named Dillon was working in his garden, cathering his potatoes and trying, among other things, to ensure that a particularly aggressive goat didn't get into the garden to steal the potatoes. The goat was just outside his fence on the road. A priest came by and, stopping, asked Dillon how he was doing. He asked "Are you digging them, Dillon?" Dillon didn't realize there was anyone there and thought it was the goat speaking... Anna McGoldrick has a comparatively recent version of it on her CD "It's the Irish in me." That's available from her web site. Tom Cahill is still alive and active in St. John's. |

Priest hides and speaks to Dillon. Dillon replies (as if) to a goat. I wondered if there was a bit of anticlericism there. Dillon wouldn't need to work as hard if the goat and the priest didn't want their share of his produce. He can't be rude to a priest, but he can to a goat. |
