Another mishearing/Ramones

My computer won't let me search right now, so I don't know (apologies in advance) if there is a thread about the Ramones being on NPR for "I wanna be sedated" as one of the most influential 100 songs of the last 100 years, or something. I mean, come on... the Ramones? I didn't get it. What did you all think?

Which leads me to something I would have added to the Misheard Lyrics thread if the computer would have let me find it... I have a friend that heard that line as "I wanna piece of deadhead!"

I remember the Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, The Clash, etc. I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the Ramones were no more than an American band that jumped on the punk wagon.

No Ramones fan here, but I've heard enough about them to know that they have a diehard following within certain circles, being considered a seminal band in the realm of punk. Joey Ramone seems like a nice enough guy, the few times I've seen him on TV: poignantly articulate and reasonably intelligent.

As far as their music being influential, well.... Probably not as commercially viable to reach a wide enough audience. Not in any sense like The Beatles, for instance.

Jon - If I'm not mistaken it's the other way around. Many of the punk bands in England started up after hearing the Ramones when they toured England. Iggy and the Stooges were a major influence also.

I presume when the speak about "influential" it has more to do with other groups than with the public. Unless they influenced a lot of people to go out and get sedated, that is.

Ah The Ramones, one of my favourite Folk groups. Seriously though, I believe that Wesley S is right in that the Ramones came first and influenced the Pistols and that lot. I like the Ramones, I think they were a great, straight ahead, no holds barred Rock & Roll band.

The Blitzkrieg Bop and Sedated are great dance tunes.

IMHO the Ramones, along with Iggy and the Stooges and a few groups that no one remembers like Television, created punk. They rescued rock and roll from the excesses of the 70s. I mean, think about all the bombastic, overblown music that was being passed off as "Rock" in the mid-70s. The Ramones reintroduced the two-minute song, they brought humor and a sense of danger back to rock music as well. But perhaps most importantly, the Ramones were a bunch of regular guys who were by no means virtuoso musicians. They took rock music out of the hands of the technicians and put it back in the hands of the "folk," or at least in the hands of a bunch of kids who just wanted to make loud, noisy music in the best possible way. My first band, the Pungent Vegetables, was a Ramones/Clash/Sex Pistols cover band. I've been in about a dozen different bands since then, but I never have had as much fun as when I was a teenager singing "I just wanna have something to do" at the top of my lungs!

Ah and don't forget such classics like Beat On The Brat and the KKK Took My Baby Away....

Rev,

Exactly. The 5 minute guitar solos followed by the 10 minute drum solo followed by the 15 minute guitar duels with Laser light shows needed to end. The Ramones and the Stooges were great alternatives.

And the love songs! :

I met her at the Seven Eleven
Then I was in seventh heaven
She was standin' by the Space Invaders
So I said "Can I see you later."

Gabba gabba hey,

Wesley, I have done some reading and I stand corrected, the Ramones did influence the Sex Pistols amongs other groups and are viewed by many as the fathers of punk. Thanks.
