10 Dec 00 - 01:34 AM (#354312) Subject: Ramblin' Rover From: kimmers The header is a bit of a misnomer. I know that the lyrics to Ramblin' Rover are in the DT, and I know the tune... more or less. But can someone point me to the chords? I've loved this one since I learned it in the SCA and would love to be able to torment my friends with it at the Post-Lessons-And-Carols-Choir-Party next weekend. Kimmers, if the thread name prefixes don't fit your request, leave them out. I changed the title to Chords Request: Ramblin' Rover. |
10 Dec 00 - 10:09 AM (#354418) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: Murray MacLeod You will be assailed by anally retentive purists who will tell you this song should always be sung unaccompanied. I tend to agree, unless you are skilled in playing fast triplets fingerstyle, when guitar accompaniment really enhances the song. Murray |
10 Dec 00 - 04:22 PM (#354560) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: kimmers True, except sometimes being able to add a bit of accompaniment can help people to learn a song that they haven't heard before. Just like using a organ or piano accompaniment for rehearsal only then dropping it for the performance. I don't play keyboards worth squat, so guitar is all I have. |
11 Dec 00 - 01:39 PM (#355059) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: Mooh Since the words are in (please forgive me) Rise Up Singing, then I expect the chords are too. Can't put my hands on my copy at this moment. Beware, the usual RUS caution about weird chord changes will likely apply. Mooh. |

Preferably sung after two or three mugs of your favorite corrosive liquid. "Sober men and plenty" should clearly *not* be a reference to the singers ;) It hadn't occurred to me what a perfect SCA song that was... M |
27 Sep 04 - 05:57 PM (#1282579) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Refresh... Anyone kick the purists in the nuts and come up with chords for this yet? (In the process of taking nearly all my acapella songs and putting guitar chords behind them) |
28 Sep 04 - 02:13 AM (#1282860) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: Cluin Though I always do it acker peller meself, try these:
Same chords for both verse and chorus. Alternatively, if you want to leave out the minor chords in the 4th line, you can replace them both with an A (or A7). Maybe you can do that on the chorus to make it a bit different. |
28 Sep 04 - 02:39 AM (#1282870) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: Cluin By the way, may as well correct the lyrics in the DT for this song while I'm at it... (corrections in italics) RAMBLIN` ROVER (Andy M. Stewart) (chorus) Oh, there's sober men in plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety That have never yet kissed a girl But give me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over And together we'll face the world There's many that feign enjoyment From merciless employment Their ambition was this deployment From the minute they left the school And they save and scrape and ponder While the rest go out and squander See the world and rove and wander And they're happier as a rule (chorus) I have roamed through all the nations Ta'en delight in all creation And enjoyed a wee sensation Where the company did prove kind And when parting was no pleasure I've drunk another measure To the good friends that we treasure For they always are in our minds (chorus) If you're bent with ar-thir-itis, Your bowels have got colitis You've galloping bollockitis And you're thinking it's time you died If you've been a man of action Though you're lying there in traction You may gain some satisfaction Thinking, "Jesus, at least I tried!" (chorus) |

Works for me! (Note that some of the Chords don't line up with the lyrics because of the font, but you'll figure it out.) |
13 Oct 13 - 05:10 PM (#3566626) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST,ketchdana Could the "correct" words to Ramblin' Rover, as written two posts above by "Cluin" (28 Sep 04 - 02:39 AM), be put into the DT?
The version that's sitting in the DT now is almost laughable in places.
I would make just one change: Substitute "wir" for "our" at the end of the second verse.
Thanks,
... Bob

08 Jun 17 - 08:11 PM (#3859735) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST,Mikki This isn't in the same key as Andy's version on youtube, but I like these chords for it. I'm giving no guarantees as to the "correctness" of the chords supplied - these are what are in the book. The words are verbatim from the book, although it is perfectly possible that Andy may have slightly changed them himself from performance to performance. I heard Andy sing the song unaccompanied many, many times, but also on occasions accompanied by Manus Lunny on bouzouki and there is a "Youtube" clip of Andy singing it accompanied by Gerry O'Beirne on guitar. Andy wouldn't have cared whether you sung the song accompanied or unaccompanied - he'd just have been very happy to hear someone singing one of his songs. |
09 Jun 17 - 07:18 AM (#3859825) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST,kenny Sorry about this, but it's really not my fault. In posting the chords above the lyrics, the spacing appears to have shifted the chords so that they no longer match the lyrics. I don't think I can do anything about that - I did my best. |
