Am I missing something here?

Please, please do not take this as a snarky comment — I'm truly puzzled and wondering if I'm missing something.

A couple of times I've gone into the DT to look for a song, found the title and find it's attached to another song, usually a parody of the one I'm looking for. The latest was Hobo's Lullaby. I don't remember what the other one was — I just chalked it up to being a mistake and didn't think much more about it.

I know Dick and Susan have a monumental task to get all this material together and I certainly don't want to give offense. I'm just wondering.

ddw, I am not sure which search you used but the situation is very confusing here and I think is in the process of being rationalised.

My guess is that you went though the alplabetical listing which brings up song titles. The next page that shows is in fact a search of songs that match those titles and you get the whole lyrics for each match one page at a time and may not see the song you are looking for first on the list.

If you do find what seems to be a faulty link or listing for a song, they do appreciate a PM telling them about it. I think I'd found one, once, which was listed under the wrong title or some such.

David- Titles, as I have said for years, are a snare and a delusion. Enter the phrase you're looking for in the search box. and you'll get all the hits you're entitled to,

If I recall correctly, sometimes when a parody or different version of a song comes up you can go to the next page in that listing and find the one you're after. In other words, several songs or versions may be linked to the title you've chosen, but you have to select the "next page" feature to see them all.

Well, there are things on the online version of the database that just don't work right. The "titles" list does not actually link to the songs by titles - what it does is a search of the entire database for songs that contain the words of the title. This works fine for "Twa Corbies," but not so well for "River." Max knows there's a problem with the "titles" feature - no need to swamp him with notices about it. He also knows that there are lots and lots of bad links to MIDI files - probably too many to fix. If something is bad and you need a correct copy, post a message on the "Help" forum and I or one of the JoeClones™ will e-mail it to you, if you can't get it yourself from the downloadable database.
Max may contradict me on this, but I think that in general, it doesn't do any good to notify us about links in the database that need to be fixed. But if you need something that's there and you can't get at it, ask for it in the Help Forum.
If you do a search and the song you want doesn't come up, watch for a link on the page that says "next entire page," and the song you're looking for might be on that page. There's one children's song that brings up a bawdy song first, which I suppose may not be the best thing - wish I could remember which one it is...
Since the beginning of Mudcat, the best way to search the database has been to put distinctive words from the text of the song in the the search box, [in square brackets if you want to search for an exact phrase].
And even better than that is to use the downloadable version of the database, which is as rock-solid as it has ever been.
Hope that helps.

And yes, ddw, it has been noticed that you have not been around much lately, and your friends miss you. Y'all come back!

Thanks to all — I obviously was missing something. I had never twigged on the Next Entire Page function. I was just going into the listings through the initial-letter thingy at the top of the forum and thought whatever popped up was all there was.

So much for my daily edification — now I can be REALLY stupid for the rest of the day.

Joe Offer — thanx for the kind words. I wasn't not here by choice. Sometimes they put me on a job that requires actual work for all the hours I'm here and I don't get a chance to check in on the 'Cat. My regular job has a two-hour (or more) period at the end when I'm not doing much more than monitoring the news wires for breaking stories and I have a lot of time to wallow in the Mud. Really miss it when I don't for a few days.

cheers,

david
