Lyr Req: UK/Irish Trucking Songs

I am trying to find some songs about truck, or lorry drivers written from a British,Scottish,Welsh or Irish perspective.

There are a few I have heard. One by The Dubliners that is titled I believe "Champion At Keepin' Them Rollin'". The other was written and performed by Richie Kavanagh from Ireland, called, "Juggernaut", a comical song complete with citizen's band radio bits between two drivers, lamenting the tough task of driving a big truck through the narrow streets of some areas.

I would like to know of any others and if anyone can provide the writers/artists involved, CD titles etc.

Trucking songs were very big here in the U.S. some years ago, although most were novelty items such as "Convoy", or tear-jerkers like Red Sovine's "Giddy Up Go".

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays to all

Try these - mind you I am not sure if they meet your requirements. Truck Driver Divorce - Frank Zappa. Truck Drive, Truck Driver - Bobby Bare. Truck Driver's Blues - Barbary Coast. Truck Driver's Dream - Spotnicks. Truck Driver's Lament - Icicle Works. Truck Driver's Prayer - Dave Dudley. Truck Driver's Queen - Jimmy Martin. Truck Driver's Ride - Speedy West. Truck Driver's Special - Lonnie Lillie. Truck Drivin' Fool - Red Simpson. Truck Drivin' Man - Dave Dudley; John Greer; George Hamilton IV; Ricky Nelson and many others. Truck Driving - Jasper Carrott. Truck Driving Buddy - Frankie Miller. There are loads of others but the above some of which you may already know is a fair cross section. M

Champion at keeping 'em rolling is a Ewan MacColl song.

The classic one is pre-motorisation, and it's the one in the DT as Jim the Carter Lad, though I've always heard it sung as Joe the Carrier Lad.

Any old truckers out there remember the jungle cafe on the old A6 near Shap. if you do, who were Blondie and Mary. did they work in the jungle, or were they ladies of the evening perhaps..I have often wondered while I have driven up the M6, The jungle was pulled down when I started trucking...............

Something weird happened with that post - I was talking about the song that is in the DT as Jim the Carter Lad, which I've always heard as Joe the Carrier Lad.

Here is a site that might be worth investigating, Clifton about British Country Music You could bring back your findings and put them on show here.

What happened was that you forgot the closing " on your href attribute of the anchor tag (<a>).

Thanks again folks.

McGrath of Harlow, I got to the site by typing it in the title bar as the link came up as unreachable. Wow! I had no idea Country was so popular over there, it'll take me a while to work through that site, but I'll get back to you, and thanks for steering me there.

Don't forget the Germans!
Back in the 80s and early 90s, they went overboard on Cowboy and Trucker songs. On stage they looked more like American bands than the bands they emulated. One TV show was hosted by Herr Jonny Hill and showcased both original and cover songs, auf deutsch.
Some classic (?) German songs I found at a truck stop on a German tape ("Trucker Songs, 1. Folge") include:
"500 Meilen von zu Haus" and "Koenig der Tramps (King of the Road in German)Gunter Gabriel.
"Der Trabbi and der Truck" Truck Stop (they also had a separate song "Tanz mit mir" which was pretty fun).
"Geistertruck" Tom Astor.
"Mehr hinterm Lennkrad als zu Haus" and "Ruf Teddybaer eins-vier" Jonny Hill.

Some Saxon stuff anyway.
Cheers,
Brian

You can't get a better Irish trucking song than "Keep her lit" (slang for "keep on going", by Triaxle. The lyrics speak of demanding bosses and harsh traffic enforcement.

Many years ago I heard Hughie Jones of the Spinners sing a song with the line "Served my 21 years behind the steering wheel" If anyone knows this I would be grateful for the lyrics

'I Like Trucking' by Not the Nine O'clock News. You can find it on Google.

Contains good example of the truck driver's gear change.

But in the UK we mostly say 'lorry' not 'truck'.
