I sang 'don't come the cowboy with me sonny Jim', as a tribute. Kirsty was due to open a ceremony - a tribute to her father (Ewan) at Salford at the beginning of january.... MacColl died in a speedboat accident last month A tribute to singer/songwriter Kirsty MacColl is to be broadcast by the BBC on the same day as a memorial service is held. The programme, called Thank You for the Days - A Tribute To Kirsty MacColl, will look back at her life and career and examine the music of the widely loved artist Presenter Johnnie Walker, who was a close friend of MacColl, will host the hour long programme on BBC Radio 2. MacColl, 41, died when she was hit by speedboat while diving off the coast of Mexico with her two children last month.
Billy Bragg and MacColl were good friends The memorial service will be held on Saturday 20 January at St Martin in the Fields church, near Trafalgar Square in central London, with the tribute broadcast that evening. A private funeral attended only by family and close friends has already taken place. Appearing on the tribute will be Billy Bragg and guitarist Johnny Marr who talks about MacColl's ability to juggle her careers of musician and mother. Holly Johnson, of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, speaks of his friendship with the star and Phil Chevron of The Pogues remembers her biggest hit, Fairytale of New York. In recent years MacColl spent an increasing amount of time in central and South America exploring new directions for her career. Cuban influence Just weeks before her death she recorded an eight-part series for Radio 2 about Cuban music which was postponed as a mark of respect. It will now be broadcast on 31 January at 2200 GMT. A memorial fund to MacColl, called Music Fund For Cuba, has been set up. It will be used to provide instruments and sheet music for children in Cuba, which provided the inspiration for her music throughout the 1990s. Thank You for the Days will be broadcast at 2000 GMT on 20 January.
