Now, perhaps he was thinking of New Jersey's motto, the Gardin State... if so, I hope for his sake, he takes his snowshoes if he ever goes to Greenland. Ya know, (for those of you who have never smelt New Jersy) one of New York's major cancer zones is down wind from her state... (not to mention his nomination of our next ecconomic tzar - hoping to return us to the glory years under Ford?) It is going to be a long cold four years, I fear.... ah hell, any one know the ballad "Green and rolling Mills of New Joisey?" We now cut to a rebuttal from our own dear Troll.... I would be off to several other places in the wink of an eye. New York ain't what it used to be. Once it was somewhat fun to live here. I think, given my druthers, I'd live in the South of France, I was tempted by the neolithic museums that were interested in my early hominid portrate sculptures, a serrious hobby of mine... choice 2, Quebec, choice 3. Wiltshire. Once the first choice would have been the west of Ireland, but things have changed there quite a bit. Unfortunately, Genie enjoys tormenting police officers on the witness stand, and does not look as though she is going to tire of her pastime soon. I think if we did choose to move NYPD would pay for the moving... ah well, maybe bush will be the final inducement for Genie to see that things would be better in greener pastures... New Hope NY is nice too, but a wee bit touresty - might be a good place for a band though... Larry |

They attribute it to a drunk at a bar, but I'm not sure that's the correct entymology. "When I die, bury me low, where I can hear the petroleum flow, a sweeter sound I never will know, the rolling mills of New Joysey." It's one one of theiur older records (actually, aren't _all_ their records "earlier"?). I don't know if I can remember all the words, but I'll give it a go if no one else has them. It should be said that, much as I despise GW Bush, having someone like her at EPA is quite striking because it raises the profile of the position substantially. He must have promised her that the EPA would be taken seriously. If he was going to gut it or wreck it, I can't imagine that he would have invited her. We are not talking James Watt here. This doesn't mean that it may not be a Machievellian plot: but it is not automatically a sign for wringing of hands among environmentalists. yours, Peter T. |

New Jersey today has some of the toughest environmental regulations around. Seems they were sensitive to their somewhat undeserved reputation. I think Whitman is really a good choice for the job. My wife is from south Joisey, and gets mad at too many slaps at her homeplace (she feels that should be her privilege I guess). The farther south you go--and incidentally the Mason-Dixon line goes through south Jersey--the more interesting stuff is there, albeit highly developed in most cases. The Pine Barrens, Barnegat Bay, Cape May, and the coastal bird sanctuary named after her-uncle-the-congressman are all pretty nifty little ecosystems. Which is just to say there is still some stuff there worth protecting. Hardest kind of ecosystem to protect there: a family farm. W-O |

From: MarkS InOBU - As a kid I grew up in New Jersey and remember being told by my father that we could not go fishing in the Passaic River because it was too dirty. Now the shad are coming back and you can fish there again. I really feel New Jersey has made great progress in recent years. I can also personally relate that according to my customers, manufacturing plants, that New Jersey makes them conform to discharge standards which I just do not run into in neighboring states. I hope I am right too with my judgement of Whitman, and if I am the EPA will be well run. MarkS |
