This probably ain't it, but there's a Tom Waits song called "Invitation to the Blues" on his Small Change album (released around 1978, I think). Starts out "She's up against the register/Coffee and a spatula/Overnight deliveries/And tickets for the bachelors/She's a ___ conversation/From her hair down to her shoes/She's just an invitation to the blues" (probably some errors in there -- it's been a long time since I heard it). Like I say, this may be a different song, but since you hadn't gotten any other responses I figured I'd givbe it a try. Good luck.

You thinking of the hill country/ bluegrass tune with a line in it that says "good imitation of the blues"?? Ask/post to Jed Marum here. He knows the tune - and can find out the lyrics/artist for you. Might take some time, one of our local performers does it here in Dallas very well, but I have no way except Jed to help you.

Finally! I got some lyrics for you here. I left my friend Cliff's comments at the bottom (Does that make them Cliff Notes?)

A GOOD IMITATION OF THE BLUES

{Dm}You called it {C}quits
GAnd hung up the phone
Now go{Dm} love {F}the one you {A/A7}choose
And {Dm}now that you're {C}gone
I'm gonna{G} be walkin' on
With this {Dm}good {A7}imitation of the {Dm}blues

CHORUS
You threatened to leave
One too many times
Now I'm gettin' out my travelin' shoes
And now that you're gone
I'm gonna be walkin' on
With this good imitation of the blues

My friends all say
You're no good without out me
And they tell me
That's good for you
And they say that I'm
Just doin' fine
Then this is a good imitation of the blues

"Got this song off a Larry Sparks album in my Dad's collection years ago. The version of the words that are burned into my mind are not quite accurate (or maybe complete) but, I've been singing it this way for years. I don't know who actually wrote it."

On the label of Larry Sparks 'Blue Sparks' LP (Rebel REB1618)credit for the song is given to a P. Brayer.
