Jerry Jeff Walker wrote this circa late 60's.

You'll find it listed in the DT - here's the link to it. I'll come back with the chords soon.

Try these chords (the /small letter means the root chord with the bass note).

C C/b Am AM/g F G C C/b Am AM/g F G F Em E Am Am/g D7/high e G

Chorus: Am G Am G Am G C

between verses hold the C chord walk the bass down from C to B to A and G, A B C and back again ....

Bert, would that be "the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band"?

I heard Tom Rush sing it in 1970 ... don't know if he recorded it.

After twenty years he still grieved.

I love Mr Bojangles.

John Denver did it justice, did he not? Did sammy D Jr do it with visuals of a black man in gaol dancing?

The song reminds me of a Bojangles restaurant in our town, pretty boring.

Jed's chords are pretty close to the way I do it - except the chorus is Am - G - Am - G -three note quick run up to- C and a bass run down to Am. If you ever come into Paltalk on Sunday I'll do the song for you if you wish. It's one of my favorites. And there's a number of ways to do the song. I think a lot of it depends on your personal musical style and vocal range.

Don't forget Bob Dylan's version. I've heard people miscredit Bob Dylan
as being the song writer because they knew he sang it. The first version
I heard was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

slightly off topic, as far as the song goes, but there is some good video of Bojangles (Robinson) on You Tube - an addition to Sandman Sims, Bunny Brown, Chuck & Chuckles, Sammy D Jr and lots of others. I love the hoofers. A few weeks ago I performed Ain't Misbehavin' accompanied by a tap dancer...a real high point for me.

And Tom T Hall did an excellent version of 'Bojangles' in the 70s. It's on his 'Nashville Storyteller' CD.
