A most Happy New Year to the very first to make the significant step over the line. Let us know what happens!

This is my favorite event of the year- non-event, I suppose if truth be told- but it has great significance to me. May we all be entering a year of unprecedented joy and satisfaction. (Let's all ignore the bush behind the white house and the men and women it is sheltering and shoring up. Maybe things won't be as bad as they might.)

Well, you see gang, it hasn't got here to Bremen yet and with my new conversion to the "Kinder, Gentler, Time (KGT) I am hoping for things to improve.

You see, the first problem is that you are operating on the Grenwich MEAN Time standard which is often just as mean as it's name indicates. So let's swap to the more user friendly Icelandic Kinder Gentler Time standard to do our conversion tables. This also does away with the silly concept of the International Date Line (not the 900 one) which foists upon us the ludicrous idea that, though it is tomorrow there, it is yesterday here...which in point of all evidence is patently untrue, as it is today everywhere. Now we can move along to our formula at a more logical and simpler pace.

Take the current surface area of Iceland and subtract the linear distance between there and Pago Pago. Divide this by the square root of Joe Offer. (I use Joe here as this will help him in his conquests with the opposite sex. Since very few males have a square root, his demand should be on the rise...so to speak. I have no "personal" knowledge of Joe's current situation but I'm inclined to believe he may be in need of a little help as I overheard a recent female companion describe Joe's equipment as a "melting fudgcicle, flanked by two jelly beans.") In any case, take this total and multiply it by the number of clocks in your home, less the number of dead wristwatches in your upper right hand dresser drawer. Add the difference total (in minutes) of the aforementioned clocks and divide by the average versus the time on your current wristwatch. You can now differentiate under the equal sign to calculate the value of X, that being the time where you live. Don't forget to use the value of pi as a constant...and since the value of pie at diners between Toronto and Buffalo is $1.75 (US), use that (1.75) instead of the more traditional 3.14159 figure.

Putting it all together you can now readily see that when it is 12:30 P.M.,January 1, 2001 in London, its 10:18 A.M., June 8, 1949 here in Bremen. Of course it's always that time in Bremen so don't be confused.

I hope this has cleared things up for everyone, except for Joe of course who is free to try out his square root or convert it to a blue, clicky thing...also unique, or so I'd tend to believe.

Singing Auld Lang Syne

I stagger down the dampened street
And feel the passing time.
The moon shines softly through the clouds,
Singing auld lang syne.

In the shadows, I gently lurch,
As my heart weeps and pines,
For my love holds onto another man
Singing auld lang syne.

So here's a drink to the dying year,
I drink to the coming time;
And here's a drink to lover's all,
For the sake of auld lang syne.

Now the seasons pass across the earth,
And the trees so lightly whine
And I hear the waves quietly roar,
Singing auld lang syne

So into the mists I walk alone,
Where the sidhe laugh and dine,
I Slowly raise my voice to the sky,
For the sake of auld lang syne

So here's a drink to the dying year,
I drink to the coming time;
And here's a drink to lover's all,
For the sake of auld lang syne.

Just under two hours till the millenium odometer here in Alberta rolls over . Thought I'd drop in to the Mudcat Cafe and have a look around. See what's up. Hear the little bell tinkle when I open the door. Coming in from near below zero to the room warmed by all the folks crowded around the tables causes my glasses to fog up. Faces are blurred, but I hear music, laughter. Cussing. Arguments, respectful by and large. Advice, undertanding. Sharing of recipes. "What are the words to..." "Here's the chords for..." " That happened to me once - here's what I did..." "Let me know how it works out..." " I'll PM you.." I listen for a while. I step back out into the crisp prairie night. It's a good place. Always open. Thanks to all. Peace and health for the coming year.

Not another millenium. I thought because of all the difference of opinion it was decided to split the difference and the millenium began last July 2. Dick Clark just said everybody in New York has there eyes glued on the ball. Makes it a true eyecon I guess.

Happy New Year to everybody! The last day of 2000 dawned with sub-zero temperatures and snow on the ground here at the nether end of the Vale of York. The first day of 2001 is a real "misty, moisty morning" and mild with nary a trace of snow at all. In between it was a death-trap for those of us walking even the short distance to and from our neighbours' house for the celebrations last night. Water on ice - eek!

I hope this year proves to be a winner for everybody.

Happy New Year, everyone. A friend and I wanted to go to one of the big Millenium Commission events, looked at the list on offer and the weather forecast and went to the new city of Brighton and Hove. Procession of huge paper clocks, bonfire of same, music on the beach and fireworks from a barge moored off shore. Not.

Horizontal rain, struggling against the gale, a few wet people standing around with more than one portaloo each. We decided not to wait, dropped in at my cousins, and drove home, sodden. Looked at the midnight programs on TV - none of which seemed set up to show the new year beginning at all.

We got ready to go out and see the new year in in quietness in a local wood, when Big Ben appeared, followed by a newsreader commenting on those who turned out in the absence of fireworks with an implied sneer at those few who maintained that this was the turn of the millenium, followed by a roar of fireworks audible through the double glazing, but invisible beyone the ridge.

We rushed out in the drizzle to a local viewpoint to see the whole horizon from Southend, round to London, north and south, North Kent and down beyond Gravesend alight with myriads of rockets, and the thunder of their explosions rolling round for a good half hour. A police car drew up, and its occupants leaned over to wish us a happy new year and shake our hands. The displays went on. Some were clearly professional, but others must have been private, so that the giant globes and disks of light bloomed surrounded by smaller sprays, but they just went on and on. I've never seen anything like it.

Only one thing was missing. Maybe we were too late out, maybe the sound was drowned by the fireworks, but from the length of the Thames there was no sound of foghorns from the ships.

Penny

A happy new year to all, may it be better than last year for everyone.
I was going to post at midnight, then someone let fireworks off and kept it going till 1am. Nice fireworks, freaking dogs. Both in bed with us, shivering and trying to occupy the same space as me!!!!!
Your deity bless us, every one.
Cheers, Bron.
