Using a vacuum record cleaner. Esp good for taking chances on opera and classical stuff I haven't heard before. Lots of music for not much risk. |

Thrift shops are not as good as they used to be here.Used furniture stores are pretty good as many of them buy house contents, which often include records.I've been very lucky over the years and lately I,ve picked some great folk stuff, including the well known, but little seen album recorded in the basement of Dobbels Shop in London featuring among others Eric Von Schmidt and "Blind Boy Grunt"(Bob Dylan). Anyone else picked up some nice vinyl lately?. I also got a J.A.Sugden class A stereo amp for £15, it works perfectly and goes well with my "new" Rotel deck (£10) |

When CDs came out I figured at long last my collection of records ('bout 3000) would stop increasing (or at least slow down) Not so. It continues to grow at about 100 a year, thanks to stores like that and friends who keep sending me lists of about to be dicarded records, and ask me to "take my pick"! They're gettin' more unmanageable every year. Newest acquisitions? Maria Callas, Caruso, Paul Clayton, Cisco Houston, Dialects from every region of Britain(used by actors for B.B.C. radio. OY! Rick |

I recently acquired a 10-inch 'single' of 'Blow the Wind Southerly' by Kathleen Ferrier, and a complete boxed set of Leoncavallo's 'Pagliacci' (wot? Who cares, it's complete!). I do have quite a lot of those new-fangled vinyl things, and numerous drinks coasters which fit in the retractable shelf on the front of my PC... |

30 Dec 00 - 05:51 PM (#365837) Subject: RE: BS: Vinyl is fun From: Bat Goddess Yeah, when I checked, this being Mudcat and all, wasn't sure whether this would be about apparel or LPs...my vinyl collection continues to grow, too (both kinds) and storage is a major problem. For all media. It seems I just get the LPs or the tapes or the videotapes or the CDs or the 45s or something organized (at this time only the videotapes are catalogued) and they have to be rearranged for storage reasons (well, we need someplace to put our feet!). I currently have only the trad LPs in the shelves under the stereo. Most of the classical, jazz, humor, off the wall stuff (I've got at least 2 LPs of kazoo music and at least one of African bagpipes) is temporaily stacked in the closet at the foot of the stairs. With luck, more shelves will be built in an accessible place, but some of the classical will probably go next summer to the local Public Radio station's record sale. I keep telling everybody I'm de-accessioning, but the house looks just as cluttered as it always has! Bat Goddess |

Before the advent of CDs, I had sort of a medium size habit I lived in Berkeley and Oakland for about ten years, and there were realy great used record shops there in the 1970's. It was after the introduction of CDs that my collection began to go nuts. People were dumping huge collections of JAzz, classical and folk into local thrift stores, and they were moving it out at .50 to one dollar per record. When it's that cheap, and a lot of the stuff has never been opened, let alone played, it's real easy to justify spending $20.00 for forty lps you are only sort of interested in, but would be nice to hear. So now I have this huge mass of stuff-I'm like the monkey who reached through the hole to grab a bunch of peanuts and now his hand is too big to get back through the hole. I'm in China, records are in the U.S. in storage which is costing me $100/month. What will I do? I don't know. I like having lots of music available, just like any other kind of library. I have not seen one vinyl record of any kind in China, but they sure have a lot of CDs, but not much that I want. I bought six turntables from the Goodwill, so I will be able to play records for a long time ! My kids think I'm nuts, but they all want to get the collection when I die! Seth from China |

My turntable doesn't work so well now (Mitsubishi linear tracking) and I kind of want a new one... |

In October, 14 of us student from ECU's Newman Center, my 2 sisters, and our priest Father Tom all went on a mid-semester beach retreat down at Atlantic Beach here in Eastern NC, to just slack off and have fun for the weekend (see previous threads). When we were driving to the beach house, I was playing my Moodies Anthology Album. Of course I heard Voices in The Sky as we drove through Indian Beach. After that first night, when we went out beach walking at 1:30am under the Full moonlight...and later going to sleep with the wind and the ocean roaring outside, the lines "Look what has happened to me, I lie awake with the sound of the sea calling to me..." received new meaning for me. I will never be able to hear that song again without getting a shivers...of that most special time we spent together. Oh yes, back to the topic! Yes it's a great rendition of the song! I have a couple tapes of the Moodies material back when they were still a little known Birmingham R&B band. It's some really awesome music. As for me right now, "Dawn Is a Feeling" is sticking in my head. (I got Days of Future Passed for Christmas.) --Matt |

Thought I had a lot of vinyl too, but never counted until now. Only about 650, a paltry sum compared to Rick's but at least I've got some idea of the total now.
I've started to make mp3s of my 78 RPM collection, but if I continue at the rate I'm going, I won't be able to come up for air for a year or so. Most prized possession: a box of Jimmy Shands on the Beltona label in pristine condition, bequeathed to me by an old family friend who passed away last Christmas. "Richard Thompson........ Books inc A Ballad History of England by Roy Palmer for £7 and 1970 reprint of the 1849 book Popular Rhymes& Nursery Tales Of England with dust jacket for 50p I have only started to look at the last one I will post any that seem to be missing from the "cat" |

Where I lived in Washington there were about ten of us who would meet by chance at one of our favorite " fishing holes" a couple of times weekly. The nice thing was that we were mostly (but not always) looking for different kinds of music, so it was friendly, and we had a good time talking about our obsession. However, the old 2nd hand furniture shops are still good. I have one that I go to on a regular basis and rarely come away empty handed. Tomorrow I'm going to visit one that I've heard has a copy of the collectible "Shades of McMorrough" album. Thankfully the average punter has little interest in vinyl, that leaves plenty for us fans. |
