Tune Req: Tales of the Riverbank

Can anyone help me with the composer and correct title to the theme music (a guitar piece) of the BBC children's programme, Tales of the Riverbank - staring Hammy Hamster and Ratty. I can recall it being broadcast in the mid 1960's.

Thanks Alison, I have a friend called Sandy Stanage who is one of the very best guitarists in Scotland. We were at a party last night and he was asked to play this piece - but nobody cound rmember the tune. I've sent the wav file to him - so he may recognise it from that. But it would still be nice to track down the composer and the title. Thanks for your help.

It was written by Mauro Giuliani (1780-1840), and is a beginners' exercise called 'Andante in C'.

It can be found in a few albums of beginners' music.

Thanks Bernard - Where did you find that info?

I'm a Classical Guitar teacher (amongst other things), and have used it for teaching purposes on many occasions. The info (and the music!) are in my head, though, as I lent my last copy of my book to someone...

Mauro Giuliani's exercises are more tuneful than Ferdinando Carulli or Frederick Sor! Ooops! Boredom alert!

If you want the music (no copyright!), I can send you a MIDI file - assuming you've software to display it as dots. Otherwise I could probably sort out a GIF or Jpeg for you.

PM me with your email address if you're interested.

Bernard, I too would like a MIDI. Would it be possible to put one on your web space so that those of us who would like one could download it.

Alison, great site. I don't remember visiting that one but maybe I have. I loose track!

o.k. Bernard, So you've got the posh orchestral version. Yeah, plonk. I confess I rather like the plonk. And Plinky, yes I confess, an altogether more sophisticated arrangement.

Subject: MIDI files available!
From: Bernard

First, an anomaly...

I've looked up Mauro Giuliani on the Web, no refernces to Tales of the Riverbank, tho'! However, his dates are listed as 1781-1829... I have a book with other pieces by him, and it gives 1780-1840!! Strange!!

Anyway, as best as I can remember (possibly the odd 'wrong' note - sorree!), here is Andante in C as a MIDI file, plus Lento in Em, another of his exercises that you may also enjoy (these tunes are not accessible from my web pages, only via these links!).

Blicky for my website

Please note! The guitar is a 'transposing' instrument. The music is written an octave higher than it sounds, so if you have Noteworthy, Cakewalk, or any other program that turns MIDI into dots, remember you'll need to transpose it UP an octave (+12)!

Just remembered who has my book! The same person who has my old Yamaha classical guitar... hmmmmm.
