Lyr Req: Tim-tay-shun (Red Ingle)

Subject: AKA "Temptation"
From: Steve Parkes

... as in "I wanna hear 'Temptation'!" on "Cigareets and Whusky", also by Red Ingle. I know the words to the actual song "Temptation", but I could never work out all the made up bits like "Now, tell me will ya darlin'/Why ya look so bad tonight?/There's rings around yer eyeballs ..." and "Like the Serpent tempted Adam ...".

BTW, if you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry -- but you've missed out on a bostin' piece of work.

Steve

Wasn't this the flip side to 'Cigarees...' ? or perhaps 'Serutan Yob'. I think I might have an old 78 somewhere in the attic. I'll dig this weekend.

I'm sure it was "Serutan Yob" (a take-off of "Nature's Boy", if anyone's wondering -- as recorded by Nat King Cole, for one). I think "Chloe" ("Song of the Swamp") was on the back of "Cigareets ..". I've got a straight version of "Chloe", and it sounds like a send-up anyway!

I haven't got to the attic yet but I've only got two of his 78rpms. I'm sure the fourth side is "Mr Mozart's Turkey Trot', not 'Chloe'. But this is in the UK, so may be different elsewhere.

TEMPTATION (TIM-TAY-SHUN)
Red Ingle and The Natural Seven
Writers: Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed

Intro: Resin on the bow and here we go...pffffft!

Oh, tell me will you darlin'
Why you look so bad tonight
They's bags around yur eyeballs
Which is Red instead of White

Well, it was this a-way!

You came, I was alone
shucks! I shoulda know-ed
That you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN
You smiled, a-lurin' me on
My heart is plumb gone
'Cause you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN

It would be thrillin'
Iff'n yur willin'
But iff'n it never can be
Then pity for me
'Fer you wuz too bored to be kissed
I couldn't resist
'Cause you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN
And I wuz yore'n

Yes, as the Serpent temped Adam
As the Apple tempted Eve
As a Mudhole tempts a Mosquit-er, darlin'
That's how you tempted me

And as Corn Liquor temps a Drunkard
As Sorghum tempts a Bee
As the Willer-tree tempts a Catterpillar, darlin'
That's how you tempted me

You came when I wuz alone
Shucks! I shoulda know-ed
That you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN
You smiled, a-lurin' me on
My heart is plumb gone
'Cause you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN

It'd be thrillin'
iff'n yur willin'
But iff'n it never can be
Then pity for me
'Cause you wuz - too bored to be kissed
I couldn't resist
'Cause you wuz TIM-TAY-SHUN
And I was yore'n

Here's my heart, take it away
Yes, take it away and say
That we will never, never, never part
I'm just a slave, just a dadburn slave
I'm a-gonna win you
'Cause yur TIM-TAY-SHUN
And I'm a red-hot slave [Hot Cinders!] fer you

Well!!!

I have to say that I'm most upset that no credit was given to the female vocalist who did most of the singing on this recording. It was the usually-beautiful voice of Jo Stafford. Later on, Stafford occasionally sang comedy songs with her husband Paul Weston, using the names Jonathan and Darlene Edwards. I don't know if she's still alive. She certainly had one heck of a versatile voice.

I got an e-mail from Gene, admitting that the primary vocalist on this recording was:
[JO STAFFORD] as CINDERELLA G. STUMP
Jo, my jo, justice has been done. As far as I can determine, Jo Stafford is alive and well, and 80 years old.

Thanks for lyrics Gene. I'm afraid my 'English' English
made it impossible for me to catch the 'American' English
lyrics for Steve off my scratchy 78 (played on a wind-up).

BTW.. the flip of this was "Mr Mozarts Turkey Trot".
Was Jo Stafford also the singer on "Serutan Yob"?

Moe Zart's Turkey Trot!! How could I forget? And yes, I knew about the lovely Jo Stafford. Remember "Shrimp Boats"? And I think it was she on Spike Jones' condensed rend(er)ing of "Carmen".

Thanks a lot, Gene: now I can die happy!

Yes, the other side of the 'Cigareets and Whisky' 78 rpm (they don't make 'em like that any more), was 'Serutan Yob'.

I've been looking out for a CD copy of Spike Jones's brilliant output which includes 'I Went to Your Wedding'. For some reason, all the CDs I've seen contain loads of wonderful manic music, but not 'I Went to your Wedding'.

Though the basic ingredients are in the 'Laughing Record', my own feeling is that 'I Went to Your Wedding' is more natural - as in The Natural Seven, I suppose.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Hi, Bobby Bob - I have a rather large collection of Spike Jones recordings, but not that one. I found a Spike Jones - Greatest Hits (click) album that has the cut. Is is a parody of the Patti Page song?

I've got Patti Page's "Wedding" too. It's hard to listen to it without expecting her to snigger all the time.
