Hello there everyboby who may read this.

Happy new year from germany first.

I'm searching for the lyrics and the chords of the song "Lord of the Ages" from the band Magna Carta for more than 15 years now.I've even contacted Linda(singer in the band)who then promised to send them to me but she did not up to now(it was nearly a year ago and I've asked her three time in the meantime).

Maybe there's anybody out there who can help me.It would make me real happy. If so please email to either menzze@web.de or menzze@hotmail.com

Thanks a lot in advance

menzze

Hi Domenico

Thanks a lot for your reply and the purpose to record it for me but that's not necessary 'cause I got the record myself. But there are to many strange sounds on it so I don't arrive writing down the lyrics from the record. Maybe you can and mail them to me. The email adress mentioned in the top of this message or to menzze@hotmail.com

Thanks an lot and have a good time

Hi menzze,

I have a been a big fan of Magna Carta for over 20 years now and Lord of the Ages has alway been one of my favorites. Like domenico, I have a hard copy of the lyrics which I copied from the record 20 years ago. If no one has sent you the chords yet, I would be happy to transcribe those out for you. So if you have received the lyrics that domenico sent you, please email it to me or post it here so I can add the chords in for you.

A couple of months ago I found from Magna Carta's website (Linda's letters) that they are trying to publish all (or maybe some) of the songs by Chris Simpson. I am not sure whether when and if it would be available but I am looking forward to that.

Take care,

Raymond

Is there really not more than only two people who know Magna Carta or the song Lord of the Ages? Hard to believe, lads, hard to believe. I'm sure there must be more, so where are you? :-)))

menzze,

I have received your email with the lyrics typed by domenico. I will fill in the chords and post it here in a day or two. I have been playing along with the record for quite sometime now but putting it down on would need sometime because I would like to be as accurate as possible. So Please be patient.

A couple of weeks ago I did a search and found a thread with about 10 postings talking about Magna Carta and Seasons, another favorite of mine. When I saw your posting wondering whether there are more people out there who know about Magna Carta, I tried to found out the address of that web page and then let you know. However, when I did a search on 'magna carta', the same as what I did before, I got the message that the page couldn't be found so I though somehow it had been removed. Anyway, I tried it again today and, bingo! it's right there. I don't know how to do the blue cliky but here is the webpage :

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=16695#158440

Again, it's a thread started by Llanfair and the subject is : Magna Carta 'Seasons'

By the way, there is a message on the Magna Carta website about an upcoming 'Lord of the Ages concert' on April 1 2001 at Armsterdam, where I believe they have quite a following.

Wish I could be there.

Raymond

Llanfair,

Lord of the ages is in the album with the same title. It was re-released in 1999 as a 2-album-in-one-CD together with 'Martin's Cafe'. In fact, there's a total of 3 such re-releases in 1999 of their early works as follows :

Magna Carta + bonus live track Mercury 538 837-2 Seasons + Wasties Orchard Mercury 538 812-2 Lord of the Ages + Martin's Cafe Mercury 538 813-2

I have got all three above but I missed the 'In Concert' CD which was re-released a few years ago (I think in 1996) by HTD records. Hopefully it will be re-released again soon.

hi raymond don't get yourself in a hurry with the chords. after such along time what does a couple of days mean? your right with your suggestion that they might have quiet a following in holland and even in spain and in portugal. Quiet sure they've never been as popular as the Stones but popularity does not neccessarily grant for quality.

Yeah, fucking Amsterdam, even from here it's about 1000km. Sort o' nearer to me is Stuttgart about 180km. i've been there on sunday to watch a concert of the Oysterband.Do ya know them? fine, fine folk-rock music from england with an excellent voice (though he was pretty pissed on stage)and brilliant musicians. if ya can manage to find some cds from them: listen to it it's worth it. i've got them all at home.

(un)patiently waiting for the chords

menzze,

Here's the chords I added to the lyrics from Domenico. I know that the chords are far from perfect but I believe they'll pass for casual playing. By the way, while adding the chords, I found and corrected a few typos in that lyrics based on the hard copy I have and some more listening to the song. By the way, this is my first posting with the HTML format so I hope it will turn out ok. I have tested this out on my PC and hopefully it will work on Mudcat also.

I have not heard of the Oysterband before but I am sure will keep them in mind.

Again, thanks to Domenico for the lyrics.

Have fun.

Raymond

Lord of the Ages

By Chris Simpson

Key : Cm (Play Am with Capo : 3)

Note : Please note the change between 4/4 Time and 3/4 Time.
(Am=2 G=1) means play Am for 2 beats and then G for 1.

Intro : 4/4 Time

(Am) (Am) (Am) (Am) (Am) (G) (Am) (Am)

3/4 Time

(Am) The lord of the ages (C) rode one night
(G) Out through the gateways (Am) of time.
(Am) Astride a great charger (C) in a cloak of white (G) samite
He (Am) flew on the air like a (Am) storm.
(Dm) Dark was the night (Dm) for he'd gathered the (Am) stars in his hand
To light a (Am) path through the sky
(C) While the hooves of his charger(G) made comets of (Am) fire
Bewitching (Am=2 G=1) all eyes that beheld (Am) them. (Am)

(Dm) Lord of the (Dm) ages (Am) nobody (Am) knows
(C) Wither he (G) goes (G) (G) nobody (Am) knows. (Am=2 G=1) (Am) (Am=2 G=1)

(Am) Below a dark forest(C) in caves of black granite(G)
The children of darkness(Am) dwelled in oblivion
(Am) Betraying one another in (C) endless confusion
(G) For the lord of the (Am) dark had bewitched them. (Am)
(Dm) From time's first creation(Dm) the wise men and prophets(Am)
And all workers of (Am) magic had warned of the (C) reckoning
Of the (G) wind and the fire and the (Am) plague of destruction
That (Am=2 G=1) follows the path (Am) of evil. (Am)

(Dm) Lord of the (Dm) ages (Am) nobody (Am) knows
(C) Wither he (G) goes (G) (G) nobody (Am) knows. (Am=2 G=1) (Am) (Am=2 G=1)

(Am) Far above the wide (C) ocean and thundering rivers (G)
And through the sun and the (Am) rain
And the turn of the (Am) seasons
Rode the god of (Am) all knowing.
(C) While all around him (G) celestial companions
(Am) Friends from the void before (Am) time was woven
(Dm) Honour his crown with (Dm) words of white fire
(Am) And carry his robes of (Am) light.

(C) Wither he (G)goes (Am7) (G)nobody (Am)knows (Am=2 G=1) (Am) (Am=2 G=1)

(Am) But in the peace of a (C) valley a young (G) child was born
(Am) Filling the night with his (Am) crying.
And an (C) old man gave thanks to the (G) lord of the ages
Whose (Am) battle is not with innocence. (Am)
(Dm) But the birds of the air were (Dm) silent
(Am) Knowing the time had come when (Am) time was forgotten.
(C) The waters were (G) stilled, the (Am) mountains stood empty.

(Am=2 G=1) And the cities were (Am) deaf long (Am=2 G=1) long ago.

(Am) (Am=2 G=1)……….(Repeat this line 5 times)

4/4 Time

(Am) (G=2 D=2) ……….(Repeat this line 4 times)

(Am) ……….(Repeat this line 10 times)

(Am)Enough cried a voice and the (Am) earth was awakened
The (Am) poor and the rich felt the (G=2)plague and the (Am=2)fire,
(Am)Death and destruction (Am) rode out together
(Am) Turning the world to a (G=2)funeral (Am=2)pyre. (Am) (Am)

It was the (Am) lord of the (Am) ages
(Am=2) Gathering (G=2)in the (Am) harvest
It was the (Am) lord of the (Am) ages
(Am=2) Gathering (G=2)in the (Am) harvest

(Am=2) Gathering (G=2)in the (Am) harvest ……….(Repeat this line 4 times)

(Am) (G=2 D=2) ……….(Repeat both measures 3 times)

(Am) ……….(Repeat ??? times)
[Long solo over mostly an Am chord and some others that I can't pick out. Please listen to record ]

(Am=2) Gathering (G=2)in the (Am) harvest ……….(Repeat this line 4 times)

(Am=2) And from the (G=2) blood
and the (Am) thunder of men and their dying,
(Am=2) His (G=2) eyes dark with (Am) sorrow
(Am=2) The lord of the (G=2) ages (Am) gathered in his harvest

(Am=2) Gathering (G=2)in the (Am) harvest ……….(Repeat this line ? Times) …. [Please listen to record]

(Am) (Am) (Am) (Am) (Am) (G) (Am) (Am) ……..[Same as intro.]

3/4 Time

(Am) But to the old and the (C) helpless
To the weak and the (G) humble
To the (Am) children of light
His words of (Am) compassion breathed on them (C) gently
(G) Dissolving the darkness across the great (Am) valley that rumbled with fire. (Am)
And from the (Dm) death and destruction
(Dm) The lord of the ages (Am) carried the fruits of the (Am) harvest
To (C) freedom.

(Dm) Lord of the (Dm) ages (Am) nobody (Am) knows (Am)
(C) Wither he (G) goes (G) (G) (G) nobody (Am) knows.

(Am=2 G=1) (Am) ……..[Repeat and fade out]

I realise that this is somewhat belated but in 2002 The Complete Works Of Magna Carta were published by E. I. Beheer BV, Overasselt ( NL) in cooperation with Beaumont Quality Publications, Alphen aan den Rijn ( NL ). Further details on www.beaumont.nu. It's only the lyrics, no tunes or chords.

Fantastic!

I am a long standing fan of Magna Carta (orignilly South African now in the UK) and keen 'home guitarist'. I loved the evocative sounds on this track and have been hunting for chorgds/tabs for years. I am really pleased to see this note!

I will add my thanks!
