Tune Req: Captain Keane / O Cane / O'Kane (Carolan

09 Jan 01 - 12:20 PM (#371492)
Subject: Captain Keane (Carolan tune)
From: Alice

I first heard this slow air from a mandolin player at our local session. He learned it by ear from a recording of various artists - didn't even know who played on the recording - but I was able to track down the notation on Richard Robinson's website. click here

In the B part of the tune, there is a b natural instead of a b flat in the notation at R.R.'s site. That isn't the way the mandolin player plays it, and I am trying to track down more sources of the tune. For those who are familiar with the air Captain Keane, also called The Wounded Hussar, please let me know what the oldest sources of the tune use - the b flat or natural.

Thanks.
Alice

The oldest source is, O'Farrell's 'Collection of National Irish Music for the Union Pipes', c 1804, where the tune is called "Captain O Cain". There aren't any 'parts'. The tune is straight Aminor.

Alice, it's been my experience in playing Irish tunes that the placement of accidentals varies considerably and is often up to the discretion of the player. In other words don't look for a definitive version of the tune. Often the placement of accidentals has to do with the popularity of a certain version in a particular area. If you're talking about a newly introduced tune then the strongest player will usually get his (her) way with the tune.

O'Neill's gives it as O'Kane, in E minor. No Bb's at all, but there are accidental D#'s in the 5th and 6th measures from the end. The MelBay fascimile of the original gives a double bar after 8 bars, but we play it AAB. I have a lovely harmony part, would you like to have it?

If not I'll send you a personal message with my email.

The Complete Works of O'Carolan, Ossian Publications has it in EMin. There are a couple of D#s in the second part.

Contemplator has MIDIs of many Carolan tunes, including Captain O'Kane. (Or click here for a fancy version. There's some info here.

Oh yea, I forgot, I don't know how fast you guys play it but we do it about 70BPM. A little slow for a jig, but a little fast for an air.

Donal O'Sullivan said his source for "Captain O'Kaine", his #133, was O'Farrell's tune noted above, but O'Sullivan has 'doctored' quite a bit. Here's O'Farrell's tune as originally given:

I think Miditext does strange things with key signatures, and it seems to depend on what program you generated the midi with. I think it will almost always report a minor tune as being in the relative major. And I've noticed that all Bob Bolton's miditext postings are reported as being in C, irrespective of what key they are actually in.

It all helps to make life interesting

This tune is in the Mel Bay publication, The Complete Irish Fiddler, and is titled The Wounded Hussar. It's given in Gm, but it is mentioned that this piece has been done in many different keys. There are parts for 2nd fiddle and cello (or keyboard).
