I'll be at a conference (librarians) and would be interested in any folkie stuff happening -- would have to be late, or not 'til Sun. or Mon. night. No replies later than 11:00EST tonight. TIA, MA

Sorry for the thread creep, but is a Librians' Conference a pretty wild and crazy time? I like to think that people who have a reputation for being dull really like to let 'er rip when they're together alone.

Then again I was a philosophy grad student and our parties were mindbogglingly dull.

Define "anything." There's almost always bluegrass or similar music at the Birchmere in South Arlington, a $20-30 taxi ride from the ALA meetings in DC http://www.birchmere.com/index.htm.

Mousethief: here's what librarianavengers.com says...

"Ok, sure. We've all got our little preconceived notions about what librarians are and what they do. Many people think of them as diminutive civil servants, scuttling about "Sssh-ing" people and stamping things. Well, think again buster.

Librarians have degrees. They go to graduate school for Information Science and become masters of data systems and human/computer interaction. Librarians can catalogue anything from an onion to a dog's ear. They could catalogue you. Librarians wield unfathomable power. With a flip of the wrist they can hide your dissertation behind piles of old Field and Stream magazines. They can find data for your term paper that you never knew existed. They may even point you toward new and appropriate subject headings.

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of anyone who says otherwise."

Yeah, but do they rock at their conventions or not? I respect librarians just fine, and am grateful that they're there, but I just want to know how nutso their conventions are.

In that case the question has to go back to MAG. The ones I knew back in grad school were party animals, but that was back in the pleistocene and I never went to their national meetings.

Hey MT, do you suppose that since they're meeting in DC they might also be interested in AC?

Hmmm. Depends on what time of year they're meeting. AC is a must in DC during the summer.

Er, sorry to disappoint, but, tho' librarians are a smart, hardworking, fun bunch, and some of us are way in touch with our inner children, we are the kind of conferencees hotels love, because we honor our reservations, aren't loud, and mostly don't make demands. and we don't trash the place. and we stay sober at conference because we have work to do (OK OK, there was that one year in N.O. ...)

Now, when we go to MUSIC festivals, it's a very different story ...

MAG, there seem to be a lot of folkie-librarians around (I know at least 7); I credit it to the idea that people become librarians because they have a healthier than average sense of curiosity and interest in exploring forgotten byways of history, literature, etc...

For what's going on in the DC area, check the FSGW links page; the Folklore Society has a concert by Garnet Rogers on Saturday, but it starts at 8.

MAG, be sure to pick up a copy of the Friday Washington Post (newspaper) -- that'll have the Weekender section with non-musical/folk events. The Thursday Post has a calendar of community-level events; diff editions published for diff geographical sectors, and some nice lower-key events. Keep an eye out too for the (free) City Paper, which also lists interesting events.

If you were free earlier in the day, I'd highly recommend the Millenium Stage concerts at the Kennedy Center -- every day 6-7 PM, no admission, just parking charges ($8/car). A wide variety of performers; this past week Pierre Bensusan played a lovely guitar set. There's a website for Millenium Stage under the Kennedy Center's main page.
