MMario turned me on to Anvil Studio and I have spent the last two days finding my way around in it, and I did it!! I made one, saved it and sent it to myself e mail to see if it worked!! It did, it did! Took me a long time, but with practice I will get faster. Now I just have to figure out Alans MIDI2text program.......I tried. Alan's program is downloaded and extracted, but when I told it to open my new MIDI, it said it couldn't. Back to the drawing board........ www.AnvilStudio.com and it's FREE!!! |

It also needs a short file name (7 letters or fewer, I think) with no spaces. If the name's too long, MIDIText won't know what to do with it. |

Then drag that file onto the Midi2text icon and it'll create an abc file with the same name, but not necessarily in the same directory. I often have to use Windows Find to see where it's put it! Open up a new wordpad file. Cut and paste the red text from the thread into this and save it as mytune.txt. Then drag that file onto the icon (the sky blue square with T2M and a little arrow in the left bottom corner), not onto the program itself. A blue box should open up and tell you it's converted the text into a midi. Hope this works. PM me tomorrow when I'm sober if it doesn't |

I like to have my Windows Explorer set to "View" and "Details." You don't want to drag it to Mid2tex.ico, but "Mid2tex" or "Mid2tex.exe" will work. (It's a green icon with a little bitty arrow in the lower left corner.) You should just get the screen that says the MIDI's been converted. You can close that, then all you have to do is find the .txt file and open it up. The black screens sound like ones for installing the program, but you've done that already. You want a blue screen - blue screen good! |

OK, Here are the icons I have: TXT2MID--"page" type icon, gives blue screen MID2TXT--same and same TXT2MID--blue icon, gives Java script TXT2MID with arrow--blue icon, gives the blue screen miditest--page style icon gives the black "extract" screen MIDI2TXT green icon, gives Java Script MIDI2TXT with arrow, green icon, gives blue screen.
NOTHING says .exe Does it matter which Blue Screen I drag it into? I just tried to drag it into a blue screen. The program came up on the screen but it said.... Should I uninstall Alan's prog and do it again? I am really confused....... |

Don't drag the file to the blue screen. If you have the blue screen open and the MIDI is in the same directory, type the name of the MIDI in and hit enter. OR Don't click on the icon - you do this with the program not running. Drag the file to the icon and let go of it there. You want the Mid2tex icon that's green and has a little arrow. |

If that's the name of the file ("HSH.mid"), it's OK, but if that's the extension (as in "tune.hsh") then it's not a midi file. Should be "tune.mid." To find out the names of things, and the extensions, right click your mouse on the icon and select "Properties." The Mid2txt icon should say "Shortcut to MS-DOS Program. If you click on the Program tab at the top, the Cmd Line block should have a string that ends with "MID2TXT.EXE" If it says something else, try the other icon that looks the same. When you right click on the tune icon and select Properties, you get the General tab. It should say (right under the name) "Type: MIDI Sequence." If you want, you can e-mail me and send the tune. I can check to see if I can get it to convert. (And hear it!) I'm not exactly sure what a "floating point" error is, so I may be way off on what I'm trying to do to help you. I'm not an expert in MIDITex, so if anyone's helping you who knows more than me, it would be a Good Thing. |

From: Bernard A 'floating point error' is the DOS equivalent of the 'Illegal Operation' message, and could mean that you've got the DOS Window memory settings wrong. I did the pull down menu and saved as miditxt, then tried to either open or drag and drop, but I get a message saying it is not a valid file for Windows. 15 Jan 01 - 03:04 PM (#375015) Subject: RE: BS sort of: Sorcha Made a MIDI! From: Jeri Sorcha e-mailed me the file, and it was a shortcut - specifically a .lnk file. I got the same error message Sorcha did when I dried to drag the link to the Mid2tex icon.
So the problem is that Mid2tex can't convert shortcut/link files into text, it can only convert midis. I don't have the program in question, so I don't know exactly what it looks like. I also think I'm having a problem finding a way to explain how to do the above so Sorcha can understand it - either that, or I'm wrong.
If anyone else can help her, please do. I don't know what else to try. Well, I was demonstrating just how confusing I can be. Edited 3rd sentence to make sense. (I hope.)

You need to find the original file thus: RIGHT click on the link. Click on PROPERTIES. If the SHORTCUT dialogue isn't open, open it. Write down the name of the file and its location. Open html folder and find Home Sweet Home midi, I have an icon that looks like a piece of paper with a blue top labled HSHmiditxt, and I have WinMediaplayer icon. I have right clicked and selected paste on both of them and neither will copy into Midi2Txt. The one that looks like a piece of paper gives me a pop up window that says HSHmiditxt.exe is not a valid Win32 application. The WinMedia Player icon when dragged onto the Midi2Txt gives me the floating error.
Those are the only 2 icons in the html folder that have anything to do with Home Sweet Home. Like I told Jeri, I think I saved it wrong on the Anvil Composer page. In Anvil, I clicked on File, Save As....then chose (from the pull down menu)Home Sweet Home.mid Does that have too many letters? I also saved it in Songs, not all files. Let me go look for Songs in Prog. BRB |

From: NightWing Sorcha, One thing that might help is if you tell Windows Exploring (you ARE using Windoze, aren't you?) to display all the file extensions. Then there won't be two or three files named "Home Sweet Home". Instead there will be "Home Sweet Home.mid", "Home Sweet Home.lnk", and "Home Sweet Home.txt" (or some such). Good luck!

It's a DOS program, so you have to manually input the name of the file, which must be in the old DOS 8.3 format. Unless the MIDI file is in the same directory (DOS name for Folder!!) as the MID2TXT.EXE program, you will also need to specify the PATH... Example... C:\MIDI\MYFILE.MID finds the MIDI file called MYFILE.MID in the \MIDI directory on the C: drive. The resulting file is saved as MYFILE.TXT, and it worked first time for me! Get Ready Sorcha, when you display lists of files by clicking on "my computer," do they show up with the full name of the file including the three-letter extension at the end, like sorcha.mid and wisemary.exe?? If not, go to View/Folder Options, and click on the "view" tab. Make sure that the check mark is removed from the box that says "hide file extensions from known file types." That way, it will be easier for you to identify the files and to figure out what to do with them.
By the way, everybody, please be careful with the tunes you submit to the Digital Tradition. I'm having an awful time with many of them. If a song is in 3/4 time, it really helps if there are three complete beats in each measure. It's also very hard to match lyrics to tunes in many songs, unless I know the song or have sheet music for it. Therefore, it's best if tunes are submitted in Noteworthy Composer format, with the lyrics of the first verse and chorus included so we know what words match what notes. I'm sometimes successful in matching the meter of the lyrics to the meter of the tune, but not always. Thanks. -Joe Offer (click to e-mail)- |

You have to create a shortcut to the program first of all, and a file with the extension .TXT magically appears in the folder where you installed the program. Unfortunately the installation of the software relies heavily on the user having a working knowledge of running DOS programs under Windows - and, I suspect, it may not work under NT or 2000. I find that DOS programs occasionally crash Win98, so WinME may have problems, too.. |

Jeri got it transferred to text by taking it to Cakewalk,(where nothing seemed to be wrong) and then dropping it in Mid2Txt.......We Who Know Very Little decided it must be an incompatibity of the 2 programs. Maybe something in the way Anvil saves the file......? I downloaded a trial version of Noteworthy Composer, I'll try that for a few days. |

Oddly enough, Cakewalk recognises the format, opens the file, and can save it in standard format. I tried it with MediaPlayer - it plays... so it must be some sort of standard! My advice is use Cakewalk, Noteworthy, or Cubase... I prefer Cakewalk. |

For the record, Sorcha sent me the midi, which played just fine when I double clicked on it. When I tried to drop it on mid2txt, I got the error message. I opened it with Cakewalk and saved it as a MIDI format 0 file. I tried dragging and dropping that one onto mid2txt, and it worked fine. Now I have to listen to Bernard's tune. |

BTW - in case anyone got the wrong idea, I didn't write it! I've known the tune for a while, and picked it at random from my collection! Sorcha - I would think that the reason why you still get the message is quite simple. With all the mucking about you have ended up with more than one copy of the file in different folders, and the one you tried wasn't the one you'd just saved. May I suggest you create a folder on your desktop, and save the file as MIDI-0 there? If you also have a shortcut to MID2TXT in that folder, it will simplify the operation, and reduce the risk!! Also, 'explore' your C: drive, select 'tools' and 'find', put in the filename and see how many copies of the file there are (and where!), and do a bit of tidying up!! |
