16 Jan 01 - 10:56 PM (#375877) Subject: 'High Strung' Strings From: Paul G. Hello all -- Does anyone know of an on-line site that offers Nashville High Strung guitar string sets? I've been either ordering single strings by gauge, or cannibalizing (sp?) 12-string sets. For those who aren't familiar with the concept, the Nashville high strung effect is obtained by using the equivalent of the "high" strings from a 12 string guitar set to string a 6-string guitar. The effect is enchanting, particularly in a guitar heavy group like mine where it ads a nice high-end texture -- almost harpsichord sound...any of you experts know where I can buy them complete? I worked worked for some time with the standard string guages as set for the high octaves of a 12 string set - but found I like a heavier G and D strings. So now, that I have setteled on the guage strings I prefer, I go into my local Guitar Center music store and buy 6 of each - I buy individuals. It works out fine - but I do suffer some uneven berakage in the Texas summers ... so I'm apt to have to replace G's B's or D's more frequently. |

I too do the same as Jed, although not in that quantity, and have worked out the best gauges for me, but I had never considered that anyone might package a set. I can't find anything yet, but I'll be interested in hearing from some of the others on this. I'll keep exploring a bit. HEY JED!!.......Are you still using high string on the backpacker? Did you also tune it up a 5th? Or am I remembering it wrong? I borrowed a friends to play with and I was gonna' PM you about it. Spaw |

I never really thought I'd use it as much as I do, but I have become quite dependent upon it! It works well with the band in that sort of Mandolin range (especially capoed up) and in the bouzouki style (especially in the lower ranges) - but I have found it has two other advantages even as a solo instrument; 1) it finger picks beautifully for songs in keys lower on neck (I have it tuned to an open D - so keys D E and F are particularly nice) 2) it has a marvelous ukelele quality for hard strumming on some fast tunes (however, this can add to my breakage problems). I have really enjoyed this instrument, and learned to overcome some of its short comings. It mics pretty well, but (fortunately for band situations) sounds great through my "Pick-up the World" pick-up and a pre amp. I am wearing the thing out, and will end up replacing it one day, if I keep playing it at te rate I currently do - but, they're pretty cheap. |

A friend of mine who owns a music store in West Palm Beach says she can get packaged sets from GHS...must be just for dealers as they don't list them in their on-line catalog. I like the idea of "mix and match" singles, and will try Jed's heavier gauge method -- I think I'll like the idea of more middle. Jed -- My band-mate just dumped his Fishman blender set up in his Taylor 714 in favor of a Pick-Up The Earth set up. He also put one in his Richard Mermer Hawaiian Lap steel. We both think he has gained something on the low end, but lost a bit on the top...so he's adding a Fishman on-the-hip 3 band EQ. Either way it'll be easier than messing with the blender.
