Silver Jubilee From: Dave the Gnome Anyone in the area or anyone who ever visited may be interested to know that Martin (and Bob I think) have arranged a 25th aniversary do for the Star Folk Club, Back Hope Street, Salford, Lancs, England. The date being Weds 24 Jan 2001 I know it closed some years ago but for a club that had it's Christmas parties in June, a beach party in December and convince us that it was Wednesday, regardless of the day of the week, a silver jubilee for a closed folk club should not present too much of a problem! Swinton residents will be there and hopefuly many others. See you there. If we can remember how to find it.... |

Went to the Folk Club at the Fisherman's near Hollingworth Lake regularly. My wife is from Kersal, Salford. We went to the Folk Club at the Church Inn in Prestwich 30+ years ago. Never heard of the Star Inn Folk Club, what did we miss, where exactly is Back Hope St ?? It will be a bit too far to go as we have lived in Canada for the past 23 years. JohnB |

Bugger of a place to find. It is a single track back alley between Lower Broughton Road and Great Clowes Street - very close to The Cliff (Man Utd. training ground.) and at the Bury New Road end of above roads - See if your wife remembers any of them. The Fishermans was always a good one - Was it Jack and Mavis Riley running it at the time? The Church at Prestwich was good as well but I remember it a bit after your time when Jolly Jack were regulars. Was Mike Canavan a regular then? The Star was good - Run by Martin Gittins and Bob Ashworth it had an unbroken recored (ie every week) for many years. Many good artists and singers nights even though the room was a little odd. Long thin room - like a train carriage - and the only passage through to both the pool room and the gents! As I said before they had some other oddities (See first post) but they are sorely missed. Nice to hear from you and if you are ever tempted to visit look us up at Swinton. (Goes for any other ex-pats out there as well of course!) Dave the Gnome |

I am at work now, she will remember the other roads. I just don't know why we never heard of the Star. We found the "Old House at Home" if you knew that folk club. Yes it was Jack and Mavis but the last name is Lee, I used to work with Jack at Avro's, it was Hawker Siddeley really but old names are hard to change. We still keep in touch, just had a Christmas card from them. I remember the name of Mike Canavan, did he come from Middleton area? there was another FC there at the RING O Bells a very trad club. When I was young I used to hang about at the "Noel Timpson Youth Centre on Cheetham Hill RD, it closed mant years ago. There were a lot of big names there back then, htey were just starting out. Marie Little, Tony Downs, Mike Harding was in the " Edison Bell Jug Band" the first time I saw him, Christy Moore lived in Manchester back then. Anyway I guess I should get back to work, will look you up if/when we get back over there. I still have a sister in Heywood and my wifes cousin who we may be staying with lives in Pendlebury. JohnB |

I am a sad Coronation Street head and every time I see the name 'Mavis' I want to add 'Riley' to it. (Wasted on anyone not into Corrie years ago!) Mike Canavan was (still is) from the Middleton area - Unsworth I think. He is on at our club soon. The Ring O'Bells was where I first saw Mike Harding and if I remember rightly Martin Gittins, who I mentioned in the Star context, had something to do with that club as well. He has a lot to do with the Middleton Pace Egg play which started there anyway. Ahhh - good old days but Nostalgia ain't what it used to be... I live in Pendlebury myself BTW - small world init??? Too many singers to mention individualy but special mentions need to go to Martin and Rick - Nice to see the original 'Pint and a half' performing after all these years (Especialy the train toilet song but the less said about that the better...) Bob Ashworth who should have been there but put in an even more bizarre performance than usual by not being...! Lynn and Barry for adding a bit of sanity Stanley Accrington (Anag: can't act yel nor sing - fans know what I am on about) - A song about Peter Mandleson within 4 hours of his resignation, how do you do it, Stanley! Me - for winning two raffle prizes. In my defense I did buy two lots of tickets! The lottery ticket I won was a dud though, shame... The pub is still exactly the same (as it has been for at least 40 years) and the front door still folds in the middle - glad I could still squeeze through the gap (just). A grand time was had by all. We completely missed the Silver Jubilee bash as we were unaware of it taking place, even though we only lived 2 minutes walk from The Star. I still watch all the videos I filmed at the folk club, Redmayne, Gentlemen Soldier, Claire Mooney, Stanley Accrington & many others including a couple of appearances myself. Boy, I miss that place. Since it closed we've had 3 children, which just goes to show that there's little else to do on a Wednesday night. There were a few songs played there that I still find myself singing around the house, my kids particularly like the ones about "Freddy the Frog" & "Bouncing Billy Barker" Dave (the lanky one with the long hair) |

Was the landslip actualy on Lower Broughton Road or just off it? Out of interest the middle bit of LB Road - sort of between the Cliff and Back Hope Street - was an urban conservation area for a while - Retained gas lamps and all sorts. Silver Jubilee From: The Sandman I was booked there many times. the landlord had one arm,but still managed to pull a good pint of Robinsons christmas ale.I remember arriving there early one winters evening[it was the chinese new year]. well I treated myself to a pint of Old Tom,Not having eaten,I realised that I was suddenly three sheets. I went in search of somewhere to eat,all the chineses were closed,it being there new year,.tramping the windy wet streets of Salford the rest of the evening I drank lemonade and somehow I did a good gig. never drink old tom on an empty stomach. |

Hi folks, here is the info about The Star, make sure you go to the blog and add a comment/reminiscence about The Star! Cheers Marting The Star Inn, Salford, has been bought at auction by a group of like-minded individuals whao all saw The Star as more than just a pub. Despite the sttitude of Robinson's Brewery in recent years, there were enough people willing to stand up and be counted to keep the place alive. That was a huge leap of faith and deserves to be proved worthwhile. As the organiser of 'The Legendaary Star inn Folk Club' for 22 years I was privileged to host 1150 Wednesday evenings whilst maintaining our proud boast of 'A Guest Every Week'. During that time there were many 'folkies' (some still going strong, others, sadly. no longer with us') who felt, as I did' that despite all its faults (too small, wrong shape, impossible to find etc etc.) The Star was somewhere special, the likes of which you won't find anywhere else. The future of The Star as a pub depends on two things. 1. a financial commitment in the early stages whilst renovation and repair work is carried out, and 2. a long-term commitment to keep it going as a multi-purpose community facility, with the prime role still being what it does best 'A Local Boozer' In view of this I propose several ways in which the followers of the folk club might like to get involved. a. A straightforward donation of cash. This will entitle the donor to shares in the company that is being set up to run the pub and a life-long interest beyond the initial donation. b. Involvement in one (or two or several) fundraising concerts either as performers or, perhaps more inportantly, as punters willing to put bums on seats. c. Offers of suitable, local, free venue(s) for above d. Ongoing support for a proposed 'folk night' on a day and with a frquency still to be decided, co-hosted by Bunting and Frolics (me and Bob Ashworth) and Mick 'Barkis' Smith. This will initially be an informal singaround but might, in due course lead to some more formal evenings in the style of the old folk club. What I am asking of all of YOU is to let me know in what way and in what capacity you would like to be involved (if at all) and to spread the word as far and wide as possible through the folk fratenity and to anyone who you think might want to know. In turn, if you could let ME have the names, phone numbers and email or snailmail addresses of any interested parties I am trying to compile a comprehensive list. Evene if you think i might have the information already please send me your contact lists so I can cross check them and make sure they are up to date. Talking of beer I didn't see any evidence of hand pumps from the pictures on the TV - just one of those chrome things with 5 taps for lager, Guinness and nitro-fizz crap. Can anybody tell me if it's worth going by confirming that proper beer will be available? There's a few of us hoping to get down there in the near future to mull over the past glories of the Star Inn folk club - I used to go for a few years in the 80s when I lived in the area. Despite being a student at the time I had this non-student air about me and when I asked for a half of Robinson's Old Tom when it was on, I was told in a hushed whisper "You can have a pint if you want". They usually only sold it in halves (from the barrel on the bar no less) because of the strength - 8%!. Good luck to the new owners anyway - has it still got those half doors that you had a job getting through with a guitar? Might have a job without a guitar these days! Cheers Mark |

Mid-song, someone came from the bar carrying a tray of six pints of Robinson's ale. They promptly dropped the lot on the floor in front of me and I was drenched in beer and pieces of glass, not to mention the sound it made. I was a regular floor singer at the original folk club during the late '70s/early '80's (as I play blues-harp, Rick christened me 'Ironmouth') and I have great memories of the whole room, packed in like sardines and swaying drunkenly, pints in hand, raising the roof at the end of the night with that song about "wild mountain thyme, all around the blooming heather" ...sigh... it'll never be like that again but it would be nice to revisit Ironmouth |

We have been holding monthly 'sessions' at the Star (First Wednesday of the month) since last autumn. Some good, some not so good, but August and October were pretty weel attended, last month particularly we had 13 musicians (and almost as many other people!!!)
