Hi I'm looking for lyrics to a Fred Neil song

"That's the Bag I'm In" It starts " Burned my fingers on the coffee pot....". I'm looking for stuff from his earlier albums... Kinda hard to find much about him... anyone got a clue? Thanks Seth from China

Let's see how much I can remember.

I burned my fingers on the coffe pot
Toast is cold and the orange jiuce is hot
I should start over but I'd really rather not.
Same thing gonna happen again
That's the bag I'm in

You know last night as I walking down the street
Whistlin' the blues to the tapping of my feet
Some old pranks called the cops on the beat
It'll happen every time

Every morning when I get up
Miss my connection, and I'm late for work again
You know they'll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in
(write your own lyric here, 'cause I can't remember - something about getting off again)
Somehow I just can't win
And that's the bag I'm in.

There's a double CD available with a fair swag of his early stuff, including 'That's the Bag I'm In': 'The Many Sides of Fred Neil' Collectors' Choice Music CCM 070-2.

Is Neil's LP "Bleeker and McDougall" on CD---and, if not, why not? (It was my favorite Neil LP.)

I want them to reissue "Tear Down the Walls." I have the "Many Sides" CD. If no one beats me to it, I'll go transcribe the lyrics now.

Here they are:

THAT'S THE BAG I'M IN
(Fred Neil)

I burnt my fingers on the coffee pot;
Toast was cold and the orange juice was hot.
I should start over but, you know, I'd rather not;
Same thing gonna happen again,
'Cause that's the bag I'm in.

You know, last night as I was trippin' down the street,
Whistlin' the blues to the tappin' of my feet,
Some jive crank called the cops on the beat.
It'll happen every single time,
Every mornin' when I get up...

I miss my connections and I'm late for work again;
Y'know they'll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in.
I just can't cop a nickle, 'cause I get paid in yen. Somehow you just can't win,
'Cause that's the bag you're in.

Juke box playin' the same old melody,
Keeps on bringin' back those blue memories;
You know this evil feelin's gotta be the death of me.
I think I'm goin' out of my mind,
Every mornin' when I get up...

(Repeat first verse)

...'Cause that's the kind of bag I'm in;
I'll never get out of these crazy blues alive,
'Cause that's the bag I'm in...

***

I'm not absolutely certain about the "nickle" line; he slurs the first few words, until the word "cop" -- but that's what it sounds like after playing it several times.

Art, this is the first CD issue of Neil's, a conglomeration of most of the cuts on "Fred Neil," "Sessions" and "Other Side of This Life," along with the single he cut for Capitol with the Nashville Street Singers and previously unreleased cuts of "Sweet Mama," "Trouble in Mind," "December's Dream," "Ride Stormy Weather," "How Long Blues/Drown in Tears," and "The Other Side of This Life." It's a great CD. But I'm with you -- I'd like to see "Bleeker and McDougal" out again, as well as my favorite (listed above). But, hey, maybe if more Neil fans buy this one, he'll do more reissuing...

Art, 'Bleeker and MacDougal' is available on CD on a Japanese label, but very expensive - $US25.49. It can be obtained through CDNow. To purchase at that ridiculous price, one would have to want it desperately!

Stewie, like me? Hey, do you know what label, where to find it? I can save my tips up...

Sarah, I don't know the label. I just remembered having seen it on offer at CDNow. It's still there, together with other Japanese reissues of his albums at horrendous prices:

I didn't read far enough. The label is given in the Dirty Linen article following the track listing: Elektra/East West Japan Inc.

Stewie,

Thank you, thank you! Yes, the prices are a genuine gouge; I guess they know their Fred Neil fans.

There goes my Christmas bonus...

(Sorry I've been away in the real world and didn't thank you before.)

Thread creep: Saw in an old FLAMING thread you were asking about Tim Henderson songs in general. PM me for info if you're still looking.
