The 29th Annual Mini-Fest takes place on Saturday, February 3, from noon until 10:30 p.m. at the Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Mini-Fest is a family-friendly extravaganza of song, music, dance, stories, and crafts that benefits the FSGW and the community. It is an all-volunteer festival with performers and dozens of others donating their time to make the day success. Mini-Fest begins at noon with concerts by BAMCO, and MacTalla, a showcase of songs written and sung by Lisa Null, "Grrrrreat Animal Stories" told by Gary Lloyd, the Archie Edwards Blues Jam, and a participatory song session, "the Foot of a Mallard, led by Andy Cooper. The day's events include an Irish Music Session led by local fiddler Philippe Varlet, a Shape Note Singing Workshop led by Miriam Kilmer, and a participatory concert with Ship's Company. Showcases include: BAMCO, Jolie Rouge and the Ramblers, Blue Moon Cowgirls, Slaveya, Barrelhouse Brawl, Orange Line Special, MacTalla, Jimmy Mandeau and Moondi Klein, David Alberding, Women of Whimsy, Liberty Dawne and the Overhaulers, Caryl P. Weiss, Banjerdan, Ian Hesford, Lea, Dulcie Taylor, and the Chromatics. For those who wish to take a trip down memory lane, Pete Kraemer will present a one-hour workshop, Songs by the Carter Family, and FSGW member Dick Rodgers will lead the Folk Song Revival in Washington D.C., a sing-along and discussion, complete with photographs and other memorabilia. Ballad and traditional song lovers can enjoy: 'The Foot of a Mallard' or songs of fun and frolic (Andy Wallace, leader), True Lovers' Knot (Carly Gewerz, leader), Many a Brave Lad Fell (Bob Clayton, leader), and Classic Ballads from Tradition (Mary LaMarca, leader). Traditional and contemporary singers and songwriters will present songs and panel discussions throughout the afternoon. Steve Key, local producer of Capital Acoustics, Vols. I and II, will host two songwriter showcases featuring Angie Miller, Michelle Swan, Franklin Taggart, Jerry Bresee, Mary Sue Twohy, and Doug Alan Wilcox. The contrast between traditional and contemporary presentation will be highlighted as traditional singer Lisa Null interviews writer/producer Jennifer Cutting on how she takes a song from her initial idea to a full-blown production. This year's storytelling lineup includes Grrrrreat Stories (Gary Lloyd), interactive entertainment (George Rathbone), The Devil and Danny Webster (Tom Stamp), Thoughtful Stories (Bill Mayhew), Celtic Fantasy (Mary Welsh), True Love Stories (Tim Livengood), Native American Stories (Merrillee Pallansch), Sea Stories (Ralph Chatham, and Fantasy Folklore (Margaret Chatham). Dances include Telespringer¾Norwegian Couple Dances, Swing, Western Swing, Cajun/Zydeco, English Country Dance, and Bulgarian Dance. Food catered by Silver Spring's Greek Taverna will be available in the Mini-Fest Market Area, along with crafts from a variety of local artists. The Mini-Fest Market Area will also feature Morris Dancing and a concert by Robert Giron and Marimba Linda Xelaju at 3:00. The Mini-Fest Evening Concert will feature a variety of local talent. Performers include the Pyrates Royale, the HEM/The Ivan Dmitrov Balkan Dance Ensemble, singer Bill Baker, and old timey fiddler, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky. Admission to the Mini-Fest is as follows: · Full Day (both afternoon and evening activities): Adult FSGW members $12 (non-members $15); FSGW Kids 6-12, $5 (non-members $6); all kids under six admitted free. · Half day (afternoon only or evening only): Adult FSGW members $7 (non-members $10).
