Hi, my names Allen and i'm from Australia. I'm trying to find all the lyrics of the above song title. I don't know what decade it is from but i'm guessing the 30's or 40's. Any other information about it would also be appreciated. Sincerely, Allen.

I'LL BE HANGED IF THEY'RE GONNA HANG ME

I was standing by a bank in Arizona
Never thought of doing any harm
When I turned and saw the Sheriff of the county
And he flipped his badge and grabbed me by the arm.
He accused me of a robbery of a mail train
He said I was the leader of a gang
He escorted me before a judge and jury
And, the verdict was that I was gonna hang.

But, I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me
You can bet your boots and saddle I'll go free
They can go and hang my photo
That they took in North Dakota
But, I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.

Wrote a letter to my sweetheart on the seventh
Asking her to help me make a prison break
She baked a cake and in it put a hacksaw
But, she didnt send a knife to cut the cake.
repeat chorus
I'll be hanged..

I sent money to a friend across the border
Asking him to buy a .44
But, he sent me back a gun for shooting water
That he purchased in a 5 and 10 cent store.
rep. chorus

When I was a boy, I used to sing this song, and recently a catter asked to know more about it. Can someone tell us, Who wrote it? When? Who recorded it?

There's a Lionel Bart song, "I'll be hanged" from the musical 'Twang' recorded in 1965. click here for details.

I doubt that's the one you're after...

Did you mean the folk song "Hanged I will (shall) be?"

I have a recording by a western swing band, the Tune Wranglers, called 'I'll Be Hanged If They're Gonna Hang Me'. It was recorded in San Antonio, Texas, on 24 October 1936 and released as RCA Bluebird 6692. It is reissued on a recent CD: Tune Wranglers 'Tune Wranglers 1936-1938' Krazy Kat KK CD 28. The discography does not indicate who wrote it. Perhaps it is the one you are after.

And there's the old timey song "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me" (we sometimes call it the "Plastic Surgeon song")

Kendall,

A 'thanks to everyone else who tried to help' wouldn't have hurt...

Kendall, I've also got the recording on an old Texas Rose LP - 'The Tune Wranglers 1936-38' TXR, but the sleeve gives even less info than the Krazy Kat CD. The only comment, complete with appalling pun, is:

A delightful piece of whimsy is "I'll Be Hanged If They're Gonna Hang Me" sung with resigned "conviction" by Buster Coward. Oddly enough, this tune would turn up in the 1960s on an album by Australian folk singer Rolph Harris!

I wonder if Rolph knew he was a folk singer. If you want the lyrics, I can transcribe them for you. It could be an original composition by the band - a delightfully spirited bunch who never got much exposure beyond their home base of San Antonio.

Zebedee, you are right on both counts..I do owe thanks to all who tried, and, if I sang it as a boy, it couldn't have been written in the 60's.

The Tune Wranglers recorded I'LL BE HANGED IF THEY'RE GONNA HANG ME. Their recording is on an album called "1936-1938" (Krazy Kat Records CD #28, 2000). I transcribed this from a sample at Allmusic.com:

...When they asked me if I'd like to go in swimmin',
I said no, I'd much prefer to skip the rope.

Now for twenty-seven days I've been in prison
Just for doing something that I didn't do.
I wrote ev'ry friend I had outside of prison
"Won't you kindly send a saw and see me through."

Now I'll be hanged it they're gonna hang....

Rolf Harris did a version of this on the MFP album 'Altogether Now' which I've mentioned before on these pages.
From memory, it's very similar to the version Kendall quotes above, but with variations like:

'I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me,
I'll be hanged if they'll hang me from a tree;
I've got so darned used to livin'
Even if I ain't forgiven -
I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me...

If anyone's interested I could dig the album out and transcribe the full version.

Cf. "To Hell? Why, then, I'll be damned if I'll die!" Somewhere in Bierce, but I can't find it at the moment.

Hello all,
Buster Coward was my grandfather. That song was sung of course by him, I'm not sure if he wrote it or not, although he did write many of the songs for the band.
It is so nice to see people who still appreciate their music after all these years.
God Bless

Hi, Kendall,

Maybe by now you've seen this. It's from the following mudcat thread:

From: Jim Dixon

I'LL BE HANGED (IF THEY'RE GONNA HANG ME)
As sung by Zora and the Hometowners,* on Decca 5460-A, 1937.

Well, I'll be dinged! (Yeah!)
I'll be danged! (Yeah!)
I'll be durned! (Yeah!) I'll be blamed! (Yeah!)
I'll be hanged! (Yes! No!)
I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.

I was standin' by a bank in Arizona, (Arizona)
And I never thought of doin' any harm, (any harm)
When I turned and saw the sherriff of the county, (heighdy, sherriff)
And he flipped his badge and grabbed me by the arm. (by the arm)
He accused me as the robber of the mail train, (express)
And he said I was the leader of the gang. (of the gang)
He escorted me before a judge and jury, (mornin', judge)
And the verdict was that I was gonna hang. (gonna hang)

But I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.
If they do, I'll sue the penitentiary.
I may never be forgiven,
But I'm so darn used to livin'.
I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.

When they say I'll swing, they don't mean the swing you sing.

Well, they cut my hair and handed me a number, (one to ten)
And they offered me a towel and cake o' soap. (cake o' soap)
When they asked me if I'd like to go in swimmin', (go in swimmin')
I said no, I'd much prefer to skip the rope. (skip it, skip it)
Now for twenty-seven days I've been in prison (in the clink)
Just for doin' somethin' that I didn't do. (didn't do)
I wrote ev'ry friend I had outside the prison: (as follows)
"Won't you kindly send a saw and see me through?" (saw me through)

But I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.
You can bet your boots and saddle I'll go free.
They can go and hang my photo
That they took in North Dakoto.
I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.

Oh, I wish I had five minutes head start.

Wrote a letter to my sweetheart on the prairie
Askin' her to help me make a prison break,
So she baked a cake and in it put a hammer,
But she didn't send an axe to cut the cake.
I sent money to a friend across the border.
I instructed him to buy a forty-four,
But he sent me back a gun for shootin' water
That he purchased at a five-and-ten-cent store.

But I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.
I'll be hanged if they hang me to a tree.
I ain't talkin' like a smarty,
But there'll be no neckin' party.
I'll be hanged if they're gonna hang me.

* Transcribed by me from a recording found at Spotify, from the various-artists album "Western Swing Classics, Vol. 4." I believe the band is also known as "Zora Layman & the Homesteaders." Zora was married to Frank Luther.
