Lyr/Chords Req: Captain Wedderburn

Subject: A Folksong, Captain Woodstock
From: Nailer

Some lyrics in my head for years.... I went riding one Sunday Morning down my shady lane, I met with Captain Woodstock the keeper of the game.

Additional lyrics about chickens with no bones, cheeries without stones and a bird without a gall. I heard this song in the sixties and could have sworn it was sung by Ian and Sylvia Tyson but find no reference in any archive I've searched.

I found lyrics on Mudcat for this ancient song, but they're in Old English or something. I'm looking for a modernized interpretation of these lyrics. I know Great Big Sea has done a verion of it.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Barry

The version I sing is similar to the one linked by Zebedee, but to a totaly different tune. The lyrics I got from 'The Seeds Of Love'compiled by Stephen Sedley published in 1967 by TRO ESSEX MUSIC and the E.F.D.S.S. Which states 'The present text has been condensed from Child's first two sets(no 46)'there is also further reference as to the origins of some of the verses. As for the tune I can't remember who I cribed it off. Why try and 'modernise' a great song? (who are Great Big Sea)?

Pedantry here: The one in the DT is NOT Old English, it's just Scots dialect, and not that difficult.....

What you need to do is type wedderburn into the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page; it searches the Digital Tradition database and the Mudcat Forum.  The first reference you will see in the Forum section of the results you will get is a set containing six questions, including the one you mention.  Easy!

If you want all the versions in the Child collection, CLICK HERE (note: a very long page, requiring nearly 3.4MB), and scroll down to "Child 46: Captain Wedderburn's Courtship".

It's also found in Dan Milner's excellent songbook "Songs Of England,Ireland&Scotland-A Bonnie Bunch Of Roses". I recently ordered it from Elderly Instruments. Online resources are great, but there is still something special about a book in hand. John

Hi,

Is "bonny Girzie Sinclair," the Laird of Roslin's daughter, a documented person?

When did the Girzie Sinclair name/lyric appear associated with Captain Wedderburn?

Here's more info:

Child remarks: There were, no doubt, Grissels enough in the very distinguished family of the Sinclairs of Roslin to furnish one for this ballad. I see two mentioned among the Sinclairs of Herdmanstoun. Even a Wedderburn connection, as I am informed, is not absolutely lacking. George Home of Wedderburn († 1497), married the eldest daughter of John Sinclair of Herdmanstoun: Douglas's Peerage of Scotland, ed. Wood, 1813, II, 174.

Grissel or Girzie?

Great version of the song by Tim Hart and Maddy Prior on their "Folk songs of old England." Vol, 2. Lp. from the late Sixties.
