Back in the late twenties and thirties my dad had what was termed in those days as a haywire orchestra. The name of the group was Yankee Mac and the Sierra Ranch Hands. He had a regular slot on KFBK Radio, Sacramento, on Friday nights and ocasionally appeared on KFRC, San Francisco. On occasions where he was playing a benefit or a hotel engagement I got to play with the orchestra and sing on occasion. I played violin and sometimes drums. I was from nine to twelve years old. We'd get a lot of tips when I sang. My best song was Cowboy Jack, but occasionally I got to sing When The Work's All Done This Fall. An often requested song was Utah Trail. I have lost my orchestra arrangements long since, and have been unable to locate any information at all about the song.

The verse starts: You ask me where I'm goin, so early in the morn....

The chorus begins: I'm going to hide away, way out on that Utah Trail.
Moonlight as bright as day, way out on that Utah Trail.
That's where I'll settle down, at last no more to roam,
In a little nest, just built for two, way out on that Utah Trail.

Something like that, I think.

Well, Spud, I see that Riders in the Sky have a recording of "Utah Trail" on their Prairie Serenade (click) album, but tha'ts one I don't have. I checked several songbooks, but didn't find the song. Keep checking htis thread, though - one of out trusty songfinders is sure to come up with it.

By the way, KFBK is now an all-talk station, and is no longer owned by the Sacramento Bee newspaper. Nothing stays the same.

I'm sorry. I think I broke your website. I didn't mean to. It's just that everything happened so fast. I just wanted to verify that there once was a song called Utah Trail and that I actually did sing it with my dad's orchestra in Volcano at a New Year's eve dance in 1935. The problem is, I still don't know. Mr. Offer tried to help, but the Riders In The Sky got their song sheets mixed up and played another song about a trail, but it wasn't the Utah Trail. The Billings brothers recorded their offering of Utah Trail on a Victor record at 78 RPM in 1928 and as hard as I try I can't make my ROM drive go that slow. I wouldn't know where to buy the record anyway and if I did I probably couldn't afford it, being that I'm on a sort of a fixed income that nobody's fixed in a long time. I sure like what I've seen of your website. Even if you do have the lyrics to a few of the songs screwed up. Keep trying, though. You'll catch on to it after a while. I have the same problem rasslin with this computor.
I wish it was 1935 again.

These are the correct lyrics. I used to listen to this record on my Dad's wind up Victrola 78. Tex Ritter sang the song along with a song called T for Thelma.

My mother used to sing Utah Trail as our family drove across the mid-west on family vacations. My parents were both born in Utah as was my older sister and me. Then we moved East to Nebraska and Illinois. I have been looking for the lyrics of Utah Trail for some time now. I'm writing my mother's history and wanted to include songs she loved to sing.

My mother has often spoken about her dad singing this song when they had family get togethers round the piano back in the 1950's. I always meant to look it up, and now i am so glad i did. My mum will be delighted to see the words again.

WorldCat.org shows that copies of the sheet music of UTAH TRAIL are held by Utah State University Library, Brigham Young University Library, and Kansas State University Library. You might have to contact each library or search their web site to find out whether they can photocopy the music for you—or contact your local library to see if they can borrow it.

Hi, I have a good story about this song. I learned it for my grandpa's 80th birthday about 10 years ago (learning it again for his 90th. He used to sing it nearly every day in school.

I got married and was visiting my grandfather-in-law a few years later who suffered from moderate dementia. We were gathered around singing songs with the guitar and he would always smile sweetly and say, "I don't recall that one."

Knowing what I do about how recent memories go first, that childhood memories remain, and that he was raised in the same places as my grandpa I told him, "Far far (he's swedish mostly), I will sing a song that only you and I know, that no one else here has ever heard before." I played Utah trail and to everyone's amazement his eyes lit up and said, "I do know that one!" Of course no one else had heard it before saying, "Why don't we know that song, it's a cute song!?" I think it's due for a revival!

The finest version of Utah Trail that I ever heard was by the Sons of the Pioneers, (1964) on the RCA Victor Album titled "Trail Dust." The trio of Lloyd Perryman, Dale Warren and Tommy Doss recorded this album at RCA Victor's "Music Center of the World" in Los Angeles in August, 1964. The title "Trail Dust" comes from the theme of the album; every song has the word "trail" in it. Some of the other songs on this, possibly the finest album the Pioneers ever recorded, are:
Autumn of the Trail; Trail Dust; There's a Long, Long Trail; the Oregon Trail; We'll Rest at the End of the Trail; Silent Trails; Down the Trail to San Antoinio; etc.
This album is not available, as far as I know, unless you can find it from a collector or someone selling a personal copy on line. I have 2 copies of this album but wouldn't part with one for anything. It's worth gold if you love this song or the Sons of the Pioneers. I like Riders in the Sky, but they just ain't the Sons of the Pioneers.

One of my uncles was Jimmy White (a good friend and co-singer with Bob Palmer). We all called him "Uncle Bob", although he was not a relation. I recall going to family gatherings and listening to Uncle's Jimmy and Bob sing the old songs. Ahh...those were the days.
