Sorry 'bout t'at.

While we were having holidays, a non-Jewish friend of ours, who shall be called "Lissi", was making good use of our computer. As a kindness to one starving for a "Mudcat fix" she frequently interrupted her research to "check threads" for me, so I could at least see what ya'll were up to, though I couldn't respond. So as not to confuse things, we asked her not to post in this forum until the holiday and Sabbath were over.

But poor Lissi is just a'itchin' to know the lyrics to "It Goes How It Goes", and she surfed the net THOROUGHLY to no avail. She learned in her travels/travails, however, that this song is not a folk song as she had thought, that it was written by David Shire and Norman Gimbel, sung by Jenifer Warnes in the film "Norma Rae" (and later by Michael Crawford), and that, although it never made the pop charts, it did win the Oscar for "Best Song" in 1979.

I know it's a long shot, but she has only rare access to a computer, and no money a'tall to buy a soundtrack, even if one were available. Hoped the generous souls here might point her to the lyrics in an accessible (read that as "cheap") form, or better still, post 'em for her. Much, much obliged.

Shula

"IT Goes LIKE It Goes," I am reminded. Sorry.

Dear Shula, If no one else replies, I have Jennifer's tape at home, and will transcribe it (prob. Wednesday). Yours, Peter

Have patience, Shula. Your request has been posted barely 24 hours.

IT GOES LIKE IT GOES
Norman Gimbel & David Shire
(recorded by Jennifer Warnes & Michael Crawford)

Ain't no miracle, bein' born
People doin' it every day.
Ain't no miracle, growin' up
People just grow that way.

[chorus]
So it goes like it goes
Like the river flows
And time, it rolls right on
And maybe what's good, gets a little bit better
And maybe what's bad, gets gone.

Bless the child of a workin' man
He knows too soon who he is.
Bless the hands of a workin' man
He knows his soul is his.
[chorus twice]

I was going to e-mail this privately to Shula, not wanting to adulterate the forum with a mere pop song. I think this pop song is worthy of note, and I thank Shula for calling it to our attention. I hadn't really listened to the song until I took the time to transcribe it, and I found I really liked it. If Pete Seeger can sing an occasional Broadway song, why not the rest of us?

Dear Mr. Offer,

Thank you very, very much. I only knew part of the chorus and the line about the child of the working man, so I first thought this was a folksong. Even though it's not, to me it sure sings like one. Thanks, again.
