Me, I hang around on Mudcat. Or Paltalk. Or play music! Yes, music! What a great concept! Wish I could play some now, but as I'm at school, and this puter has no sound card, I'm scumped!

I do system maintenance while playing good new tunes on the stereo that I want to learn by osmosis. Clean up files, download new software, and so on.

Here at Mudcat, I used to do this, and you can too-- set the time filter for the last week's worth of threads and find the Lyr/Chord/Help requests that never got answered. Look for threads with only 1 or 2 posts, and refresh them. Use your back button after each one to get back where you were and avoid long loading times.

Where the requestor has asked for an e-mail reply, send them one indicating they need to come back to Mudcat to watch for replies. I used to give the Mudcat URL when I did this so they'd find their way back. Sometimes I'd copy and paste the URL for their thread, but usually just the Mudcat one. I had a message draft I'd reuse sitting on my desktop so I could just copy, paste, and fire away. Oh and tell 'em you're a volunteer and member-- so they don't think they have a staffer permanently at their disposal.

The reason for giving the Cat URL is that a lot of times, surfers have left the request in a number of different sites, and have not bookmarked, especially when they think they will get their answer by e-mail.

You can cover it in about an hour and a half and the thing is, discovering how to do it efficiently helps with the boredom. Your mind wakes up and you get other ideas of what to do.

It's also nice at the beginning of each month to look up the Mudcat Birthdays for that month in the Resources section, and copy-paste the info into a thread. (You have to clean up line breaks, etc.) Otherwise only the Catters who have a good friend who knows their birthday get birthday threads. I have heard from a couple of people that they get really hurt feelings that no one birthday'ed them. Not that it's a duty... just that people have a lot of feelings about birthdays. And no one here does it each and every month.

A Welcome New Members thread is also nice-- and when you start one, keep coming back while it's running to acknowledge the people who introduce themselves. This has really made the new members feel welcome enough to post more than they would have otherwise. It often brings lurkers out of the shadows and we all get to discover a new, wonderful friend. I can't think of a single one that has been welcomed like that who became (or was) a flamer, in fact. I guess it's like when a killer is made to realize the humanity of the victim.... the welcome threads re-personalize what gets depersonalized due to the medium of the cyberworld.

Another good thing is to start a playful thread when you see a lot of wrangling going on. Not too many-- if there is a strong play-thread already running, wait for another time, or the flamers will get antsy about the amount of BS and this defeats the purpose. But sometimes, you may be just the one to lighten up the atmosphere. An oddball question about music is usually best.

Sending cheery PMs to people stuck in flame wars or other troubles, or to new members, is always appreciated.

Or you can write posts like this.

~Susan (AKA Praise)

Corny suggestion alert.

Do something nice for someone else.

Write a bunch of letters to those friends and relatives you haven't communicated with in a while.

Take thirty bucks or so and if you live in an area where there are homeless people, give three people ten bucks each...before they ask.

My Fave here: Go somewhere and sing a few songs for people in a hospital who are bored EVERY day.

Go to a community centre, put up a little sign. "Free beginners guitar lessons" (if you play guitar). Giving the gift of music is just about the best thing we Mudcatters can give anyone.

Told you they were corny!

If worse comes to worse, make a list of things that need to be done that you don't enjoy doing (clean your room, write thank-you notes from Christmas, whatever). If you can get yourself to do the stuff on the list, it may not be fun, but it will pass the time, and you'll get some chore or other out of the way. (I'm a mom). If you're stuck at work, school, or a boring mandatory meeting od some sort, make the list anyway, as well as things you want to get done that you'd do if you weren't there, etc. It will make you look like you're taking notes, and people will think you're diligent. (I get bored, too)

gahd - I wish I could remember what it felt like to be bored when I wasn't stuck where I couldn't do anything else. Who has time? between transcribing stuff, trying to fit music to tunes, trying to get some of my own tunes on paper, recreating an antique crocheted christening cap for a friend, trying to finish several christmas gifts from LAST year, trying to find time for PalTalk, learning new songs, gaming, dishes, laundry, shopping, cooking...

put it this way - the last time I was bored it was a meeting...luckily I was surrounded by about 500 other people who also had glazed looks on their faces.

Fib, I'm bored cos I've got nothing to do. I've done all my college work and I've got about half an hour to kill now before I go to the theatre, where I bet I will be even MORE bored!! My idea of "Entertainment" is NOTsitting in a theatre watching a John Webster play called "The Duchess Of Malfi". I'd never even heard of him before the trip was announced so I'm not looking forward to it at all! Apparently he's a contemporary of Shakespeare and his plays are full of blood and guts and all the revolting things that are inside you, but I am NOT, repeat NOT, into all that kind of stuff! I'm only going cos I have to!

Hey Firecat.........If you do a tenth of the things suggested on this thread, you won't be bored. As to boring meetings or other things that are "required"............get used to it. We all have it happen and sometimes the stuff is just unavoidable. Get creative.

Last week, I entertained the staff in the heart catheterization lab by telling long rambling stories of the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. Even the Doc was laughing and they all agreed it was the strangest cath they had ever done....but it passed the time while I lay there and they ran a tube through the arteries. When it was over I was stuck with the most boring thing you can do........absolutely nothing. You have to lay on your back for 6 hours with your leg completely still (they go in though the femoral artery and if it bleeds, you pump out all your blood in about a minute). So I invented a game....a challenge sorta'.

I've had caths and I know I'm ready to go at 4 hours, but they deman 6. I set a goal of 5. I ate lunch, read a book, talked with Karen and then at about 31/2 hours I started calling the nurse for everything. Anytime an aide showed up to check vitals, I'd be mean as a snake. When the nurse would come in, I'd be all sweetness and light. In a very short time, the nurse got tired of being called to check on the bandage or whatever and she was getting fed up with the aide complaining. In other words, although she couldn't figure out what the aide was talking about, I was becoming a pain in the ass to her day. At 4 hours when she arrived, I asked if it might be possible to move a bit and she jumped at the chance to get me out of there. End result.......I left at 5 hours.

Look Kiddo, life sucks on a lot of levels. Use your own creativity to invent work (many times you don't have too) or play games or manipulate people (a good skill to learn) or let your mind run free. Watch the play with great intensity and make strange notes that are totally unrelated to it and make sure others see you doing it AND see the nonsensical notes.....meanwhile concentrate on pieces of backdrop and sketch them upside down with arrows going to various parts and letters referencing your notes. If asked, roll your eyes and give them a humorous but curious look as though you can't understand that THEY don't understand.

Life's short. Have fun.

Possible solutions to alieviate boredom:

- have sex (with someone else or, by yourself or, buy a Gameboy)
- get high
- get drunk
- sleep
- meditate
- go shopping
- go to a movie
- read every thread ever posted here in the last 2 years
- change your cat's litter box
- clean your house/apartment
- call a 1-976 or 1-900 number for an escort or a psychic reading
- re-install Windows
- practise an instrument
- go for a drive
- create a crisis and then work to resolve it
- get a haircut or a new perm
- change your underwear (preferably after you've washed)
- bookmark and visit ALL of Bill D.'s links ever posted here
- make a financial contribution to Mudcat overdrawing your account to do so. The stress will keep you occupied.
- take a spur of the moment trip to visit other Mudcatter's.
- find creative alternate uses for a capo
- audition for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, over the phone
- clip your nails (or if applicable, get a manicure and a pedicure)
- convert to the Bahai faith (it only takes a couple of hours)
- compose a song using the touch tone buttons of your phone and perform it in Paltalk
- see how long it takes you to escape from a straight jacket, with the William Tell Overature as your background music.
- take the Coke/Pepsi challenge
- become an enigma

One of the highlights of my theatre-going experienece was The Duchess of Malfi, an amateur production. All blood and gore and high-flown rhetoric, and then in one seen there's a hand that's been chopped off, and a character throws it at the feet of an enemy. And it was made of rubber, and it bounced...

The old songs are the best songs, and the old plays are the best plays.

The choice between being bored or not being bored is an act of the will.

Boredom? Ooooh...that's a toughie. It's horrible being bored. I think it's a symptom of having lost the sense of what your life is really about. A lot of boredom is a form of depression, usually.

Many people try to cure it through short term distraction, and many methods of doing that have been suggested above, but they're all just a quick fix, I think.

There's masturbation, too, but it only gets you just so far...

And then, maybe you're bored again. Plus tired out in certain parts...

Yeeesh! Life's a drag sometimes, ain't it?

To find an urgent sense of real purpose would totally clear up boredom.

This may be one big reason why all of Europe went to war in 1914, and massacred each other for 5 years. My grandmother was living in Vienna at the time, and she said there was absolute celebration in the streets when the war was declared. People were deliriously happy about it, throwing flowers from the balconies on the marching soldiers in the streets, heading off to glory.

That's the "precipitating a crisis" cure to boredom.

Three years later they were surviving on rats and potatoe peelings, the economy was in a shambles, and their sons were missing or dead.

Yup, boredom is a tough one.

Here's an idea. Try making someone else feel good...that can have surprising results sometimes. It doesn't have to be anything big.

I'll go along with Rick...corny, but whenever I am doing for someone else, it works. I keep the HD out at all times, and can play whenever there is a five minute interval, in addition to practice time. Or that stray half hour that you made an example of, is a perfect time for meditation. Trust me, boredom is something you definitely outgrow. It will be gone from your life very shortly.

Chill, 'Cat. Boredom is a self-imposed confession. Beat the rap, dude, check your attitude and get over the stall of your own imagination and responsibility. Given that you are a person of infinite talent, potential and creativity, the first step is to notice who it is that is creating the condition. Then you can do something about it.

If this seems insurmountable, get out and walk backwards around the block. You'll be amazed how much more possible things seems when you get back.

Yes, I'm sorry about that.

I lost custody of mine a month ago when boy/girl thing came to an abrupt, if not altogether unexpected close. More upset about the cat than anything.

The easiest way to avoid boredom is to become a schizophrenic like us. We always have someone to talk to and go for walks with. He likes cola and he likes orange drink so we never drink the last one. This saves many an argument.
Best of all, there's someone to agree with us when Skeptic starts HIS bushwah.
And if all else fails, we get out our candles and our ball of string and go exploring the caverns of our mind.

Just to say that I've found another way to combat boredom. Write really cheesy poems about it! Quite like this one actually!

Boredom

Boredom is a three hour long maths lesson It's waiting for a bus when it just isn't coming It's dealing with a person who just won't listen It's working at a computer that's persistantly humming

Boredom is a person who's completely self centred It's listening to a lecture on a subject that you hate It's watching a raffle being drawn that you've not entered It's going to a meeting but you know that you'll be late

Boredom is a soap opera that's always on when you get home It's a silent conversation with the person that you love It's listening to a life story of one you've never known It's staring out of the window at the grey sky up above

Boredom is watching the news each and every night It's working with a person who just has to be the best It's watching to rough strangers getting in a fight It's lying in your bed when you honestly can't rest!

How do you combat boredom? I really do not know For me to combat boredom I stare out at the snow.

FC, to do line breaks, at the end of each line type a "<" then "br" then ">". That'll do it for ya! BTW have you heard JJ72 "Snow"? Heh heh heh.

Had me scared for a minute Firecat. I was afraid that you were so bored that you were going to keep hitting the submit button until you either ticked someone off enough to get flamed or went head-on-head with Max about "freedom of speech". Oh well. No takers. Back to boring.

Get of your bum and do something interesting - I recommend painting something and then watching the paint dry - very interesting. Concrete setting doesn't have quite the same ambience, and anyway the weight on the bedroom floor can get a bit too much for the beams if you participate too often!
Or you could learn to do silly things with HTML
Or you could file your toenails - Alphabetically!!!!!

By the way SORCHA - What is this tunefinder project, what is the brief, and how does one take part?

Boredom is just the desire for variety. Just be aware of what is happening NOW and stop wanting something different. It will come along anyway. Do anything at all but do it wholeheartedly and boredom will cease immediately. Course, you might enjoy being bored in which case, fine. It can be interesting observing boredom too.

Time to learn something...a new chord, a new instrument, a new language. I've been blessed with the knowledge of how truly fleeting this life experience is, and consequently don't have time for boredom. Boredom is a variation on a self-pity wallow.

Yes, I am sure. Even if you have trained yourself out of it, it isn't something that ever goes away -- who you are is deeper than learning to ride a bicycle, you know!

Anyway, I should say that I am very impressed with your masterful construction of boredom. Here are hundreds of posts offering all these solutions and you have managed to slip them all, except the cat jokes!! Good work -- one of the most persuasive presentations of boredom I have ever seen.

Maybe you should try something life threatening!!

Hell's bells - not yet two decades of tedium under your belt and you're bored?!
The poety's a good palliative - but what you really need is passion (and I don't necessarily mean the sweaty sort - though that's a good way to purge boredom).
What makes you angry? What makes you think: "No way - that's unjust, unfair and unreasonable"?
Channel that anger and angst into passion - put it into your poetry or go out there and do something about it. People who want to make a difference may be a pain in the arse to others, but they tend not to get bored.
With me it's been politics, music and being an incurable romantic that has kept boredom at bay for more than four decades now (and I've probably made myself a roight royal pain in the arse to many with all three).
I'm not saying you won't get into hot water or sometimes say to yourself: "Sodding hell, why am I doing this?", but you won't be bored. Having kids relieves boredom, too (in inverse proportion to increasing angst) - but I wouldn't recommend that just yet!

You're right about the kids Gervase!! I'm not having any until I'm married (ideally between 21 and 30) but the things I get worked up about aren't exactly the sort you can protest about!

When I get bored I play a guitar.

When I get bored with playing that guitar I play another guitar.

When I get bored with all the guitars I own I go out and buy a new guitar.

When I go out and buy a new guitar the wife gets upset because she thinks I already have too many guitars and we have a big row.

It is impossible to be bored while having a big row.

You've been busy, right? See there.

I haven't been bored in 30 years. I agree with Mmario -- I feel sort of wistful sometimes, wishing I could remember what it feels like to be bored. There's a difference between loafing and boredom, however, and I'm a strong proponent of taking a day or two for some intensive loafing now and then. Loafing is best (in warm weather) if you have a large porch. Wintertime loafing is best accomplished in front of a fire ...

Well, last night I was bored, so I experimented with new software, and made my first totally electronic piece... I'm going to see what happens if I use my own samples from world instruments next time, instead of the classic electronic ones that came with the thing. This is fun!

Oh, and I made two skins for winamp, not that I actually use winamp, but I was bored. :)
