Who wrote '99 Bottles of Beer', eh???

Subject: Who wrote '99 Bottles of Beer', eh???

Okay, like, this has gotta be my favourite song, eh? Me and my buddies all know it, and we chug beers whele we sing it, eh? I've got the whole song, mamorized, eh? Cos I'm smarter than the average moose. Okay, so maybe you don't know it. It goes like this, eh?

99 bottles of beer on the wall
99 bottles of beer
Take one down (pop!), Pass it around (CHUG!!!)
98 bottles of beer on the wall

So, like, you keep singin' it, and counting down, and chugging, till all the beer is gone...or till you lose count, eh?

So, like, who wrote it? And when? It's been around ever since I remember, and I've got a memory like...well, it's like...whayddya call that animal that...you know...aw fer chrisake!

Well, anyway, who wrote it? I gotta know.

As I understand it it derives from an old, old OLD song.

Probably a derivitive of the English song ten green bottles. Of course Americans have to be bigger and better than anybody else.

Seems like almost everybody sings:
Take one down and pass it around
The way I learned it in Wisconsin was
If one of those bottles should happen to fall...
In Wisconsin, people don't actually drink beer (except during the two-week summer season in August) - beer is what they sell to everybody else. I don't know if it's still true, but there was a time when Wisconsinites drank more brandy than the rest of the United States combined. It warms the innards.
-Joe Offer, now living in California where they make the brandy-

I used to use it as a timer song when doing long distance traveling. It took 500 bottles to get from the town line to the NY Thruway. and another 450 to get to the dorm.

How *does* it end? I always get really bored and go elsewhere before the song finishes - actually, before the verse finishes. I hate beer, and I'm short on patience. (This is the only time you'll hear me admit to being "short" on anything!)

We always referred to the "take one down, put it back, 100 bottles of beer on the wall." as the teetotaller or methodist version.

We always sang the dynamite version to the tune of ten green bottles. 100 bottles of beer is a much simpler tune so can last a lot longer.

Hey, this is cool, eh? I didn't know about the 10 green bottles one. Decent, man! But with beer, ten bottles ain't enough, not near enough, spedcially in Blind River, eh?

Hesperis! Whaddya mean you hate beer???? What kind of flippin loser are you anyway? How ya gonna meet cool dudes like me if you hate beer? Geez! Gimme a break, eh?

Snuffy! Dyanmite don't work that way. You gotta light it. Although, I hear if it's really old...then maybe, cos the saltperter or whatever gets old, so, like then it's unstable, eh? Then maybe. I tried it once on my brother Don. Dropped it on his head from the overpass when he was driving with the top down. It didn't work, but it did knock the joint out of his mouth, and he just about hit the abuttment. I laughed so hard I almost croaked. Then the f*cker lit the thing and threw it at me, but fortunately he had lousy aim. It fell in the river. Too bad, eh? No big boom. It's probaboly a good thing, cos the cops have enough reasons to bug us anyway as it is...

Metchosin! 72 is not bad, but I made it to 46 one time. My brother Don says he made it to 42, but he lies like a rug. He didn't never make if past 55. I swear.

Somebody WROTE "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"??? Who would write such a thing? I always thought of it as a genuine folk song. I learned it as a very young child, not exactly at my parent's knee, but rather from behind them, in the back seat of the car. My father was a very patient man and endured many interminable renditions.

The other similar song I remember from the same time and circumstances is:

There were ten the bed and the middle one said,
"Roll over! Roll over!"
So they all rolled over and one rolled out,
There were nine in the bed and the middle one said
(etc.)

Of course you could start with way higher numbers, but it scans better and is a much more tolerable song if you limit yourself to ten. Hadn't thought of these for a loooonnnnggg time!

Cheers, Nancy

B. A huge asshole who should be shot and dragged behind a Kenworth for 50 miles.
C. A complete and total asshole who should be shot, drawn and quartered, and dragged behind a Kenworth for 100 miles.
D. An ignominious asshole of major proportion who should be shot, drawn and quartered, set on fire, and dragged behind a Kenworth for 500 miles.
E. ALL OF THE ABOVE

GUEST Blind said: "Snuffy! Dyanmite don't work that way. You gotta light it."

Au contraire, mon frere! What dynamite is, is nitroglycerine absorbed in fullers earth. Nitroglycerine itself is VERY unstable, and the function of the fuller's earth is to damp that shock sensitivity down. If it's fresh and has been stored right dynamite is fairly stabl. When stored it has to be turned over from time to time, as the nitroglycerine settles to the lower side over time, and it gets more sensitive.

In normal usage, one has to insert a blasting cap in the end of the stick of dynamite. When the blasting cap is set of (by fuse or by electricity), the resulting explosion sets off the dynamite.

But if the dynamite is old and/or hasn't been stored right, dropping it is dangerous.

Get to the end. you just start again. If you really want to. A handy kind of song for anyone who hates people singing songs, because it can stop a sing-song debeloving like hitting a brick wall.

Now the ones that are fun are the cumulative ones like The Barley Mow or the Bog down in the Valley-o, or even Old MacDonald, where it gets more complicated as it goes along.

My brother Don. My stepdad. The neighbours. The cop that took my license away. Make that ALL THE COPS! The people at the variety store who won't give me credit no more on my smokes. The old lady who keeps complaining about our music being too loud when it's up to flippin ELEVENNNNN!!!! ROCK ONNNNN!!!!

Like I said, cool idea, eh?

Only why for the guy who wrote 99 Bottles of Beer? He was a flippin genius, man! And it had to be a guy, cos no skank could ever come up with a song like that. Not even a nice girl could. Girls ain't got talent for stuff like that. I mean, can you imagine flippin Celine Dion singin' 99 Bottles of Beer???? I can't.

Shania Twain, maybe though, cos Shania is cool. She is no skank. I'm gonna name my daughter after her. She's from Timmins, eh, which is no Blind River, but it's still not bad, eh?

BDiBR

p.s. So the dhynamite does get unstable when it's old, eh? GeeZ!!! I darn near coulda blown up my brother that time, but I guess the stuff wasn't that old yet...Wow! Close call, man! I gotta have a cold beer and think about that. Heavy, man.

Shock, Horror!!!

According to this site "10 Green Bottles" is now officially ancient ... I quote ...

The song that sparked academic acrimony is an unlikely bone of contention: the English ditty Ten Green Bottles, a variant of which is well known in North America as 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.

In all previously known versions of the English song the verses count down to "no green bottles" from the figure 10, thus:

"Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall
There'd be nine green bottles hanging on the wall . . ."

However, in September, 1998, a French scholar, Pierre d'Ouidlede, announced the discovery of a page of poetry manuscript, apparently dating from the late 14th century, containing what seems to be an early version. Allowing for changes in language between the Chaucerian age and our own, the scheme of the song seems unmistakably the same:

"Syxthene boetell gryne
Yhangen, Yhangen
Yhangen, Yhangen
Syxthene boetell gryne
Doonfal won
Syxthene boetell gryne
Yhangen, Yhangen
An . . ."

Frustratingly, the manuscript breaks off at that point. Nevertheless, musicologists were immediately abuzz at discovering that one of the best-known songs in the English language was some five centuries older than previously thought.

I think I can shed some light on this particular subject. In a former life, I belonged to the pharoahs(sp) beer making slaves. After a really good batch, (it was a new art and not quite perfected yet) some of us were chosen as testers. We would be given 100 bottles which, of course, were lined up against the wall. We would then each take one bottle and pass it around and each give our thoughts on that bottle. Well, we had to keep count somehow!!

Bye the way. If any of us were still standing when that last bottle went down, it was considered an imperfect batch and the brewer was punished. Sometimes we went down on purpose. But only if the brewer was a good guy, and the beer was tasty.

There you are!

Love, Annamill

A close cousin of the song is the children's version of Yidl mitn Fiedl:
TSEN BRIDER,
Tsen brider zenen mir gevezn
Hoben mir gehandlt vayn,
Zenen eins vun unz geshtorbn
Zenen mir geblibn nayn. [Etc.]

Remaining words are on THIS SITE. It is amazing how many of these children's themes are cross-cultural. American children sing:

Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home,
Your house is on fire, your children will
Burn.

German children:

Flieg, kaefer, flieg!
dein Vater ist im Krieg!
die Mutter ist im Pommerland,
Pommerland ist abgebrannt!

When our son was born we started to sing, "Minus one bottles of beer on the wall..."---------and so on...

We are now down to two billion eighty-seven million and 23------with no sign of ending it. Our granddaughter was born two years ago----and I suspect her kids will take up the challenge just like she will. We always were a rather backward family.

If I may quote BDiBR, who hasn't been on the 'Cat lately, and may again be a "guest" of the boys in blue...or then again could just be sleeping off a hard stint of seducing the local canines, etc...or whatever...

"TOTALLY DECENT, MAN!!! ROCK ON!!!!!"

Eh?

I notice that no-one has yet mentioned "One man went to mow" yet. In that case, I ... won't either.

Steve

P.S. On checking, I find that I mentioned it last year. Just goes to show.

Toadfrog:

How does it feel
To be on your own
With no directions known
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Now I can forgive you for not having a life...but not for telling us all how it ends! Shame, shame.

And there's ofcourse the infamous, classical Discordian hymn which bears a close resemblance to '99 Bottles of Beer', it goes like this:

Infinity bottles of beer on the wall,
infinity bottles of beer.
Take one down, pass it around.
Infinity bottles of beer on the wall.
[repeat until dead.]

And it goes by the title of 'Infinity Bottles of beer on the Wall'. Enjoy! :)

Time to retire the "beer" version. This is the day of sophisticated mini-brews. Too expensive for 10- let alone 99- bottles.

A note from the younger crowd:
When I was in 6th grade and coming back from a week-long outdoor education trip, I annoyed my fellow students by singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall the entire way. My method of continuing was to run it something like this:

(100.....1) bottles of bear on the wall
One bottle of beer,
take it down pass it around, no bottles of beer on the wall.

0 bottles of beer on the wall
0 bottles of beer,
Drink some down,
as you pass one around,
-1 bottles of beer in the room
(continue to -100)
(this is assuming that you took them down, but didn't DRINK it originally)

-100 bottles of beer in the room,
-100 bottles of beer,
Buy one more, bring it on in,
-99 bottles of beer in the room.
(continue to -1 bottles)
-1 bottles of beer in the room;
-1 bottles of beer;
buy one more, bring it on in,
-0 bottles of beer in the room.

0 bottles of beer on the wall
0 bottles of beer,
take the tag off,
put it on up,
1 bottle of beer on the wall.
(continue to 100....repeat from top)

*shrug* Like I said, I was trying to annoy them; I made it down, back up, and had gotten back down to 47 bottles by the time we returned to my school--meanwhile, people had tried everything they could think of to stop me, including "The Song that Never Ends"...lucky that I'm not affected by that one. To put it mildly, everyone was rather glad to get off of the bus.
Anyway, the other thing I remember from elementary school/junior high was the variant,
0 bottles of beer on the wall,
0 bottles of beer,
throw some back up,
put the cap on,
1 bottle of throw-up on the wall.
