BS: OTHER FACTS (about you)

25 Jan 01 - 03:56 PM (#382440)
Subject: OTHER FACTS (about you)
From: Allan C.

Since it is always possible that my current situation might come to an end someday, it seems wise for me to update my resume. I am doing that and am more or less using the "Qualifications Brief" format. One of the nice things about that format (and possibly others) is that it is recommended to include a heading called OTHER FACTS. This is where one can include good stuff that just doesn't show up in the usual list of employment and training, etc..

I got to thinking about you guys and that there are really cool, interesting or at least little known things about you that probably don't show up here in the threads.

Now, this is an opportunity for you to shine. This is where you can throw modesty to the winds and speak about your accomplishments, abilities and expertise. There are no limits here so don't be afraid to mention something that you would probably NOT include on your resume.

Okay, I'll start: Very few people have any idea that I am as physically strong as I am. (It's that Clark Kent thing I grew up with, I guess.)

Most people don't have a clue at how good I am with numbers; once I've written a phone number etc. down or seen it in print, I never forget it...I have all these numbers stored somewhere on my *hardhead drive*.:-)

Everyone who knows me knows that I have a really weird sense of humor. I laugh at things that NOBODY else thinks are funny.

What nobody knows is why. I remember bits and pieces of songs, poetry, books, old television shows ... LOTS of them. Occasionally someone will say something that reminds me of one of these and I will say the punchline in my head and laugh at it. Everyone thinks that I am laughing at whatever was said, which may be completely non-funny.

Unsurprisingly, I get strange looks at these times. *G*

NightWing

I'm an excellent photographer (hobby) and my photos adorn our home. (My camera of choice is a black bodied 20 year old Nikon FE. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.) I also make a great steak and caesar salad; know how to program a VCR; and I cry during emotional scenes in movies or television dramas, but mask the tears by pretending to be scratching an itch.

I can program YOUR VCR without looking at the manual...and I have a VERY good sense of time and space...I can tell how long it's been since "X" hour...and I can process seconds in my head in timing short events....and I KNOW how long it takes to get from "here" to "there"...not just walking or driving time, but I mentally add in 'getting your coat on' time and 'slow traffic' time. I am almost always 'on time' or early to an event. As you can imagine, this drives most other people crazy..*grin* (I cannot, however remember dates and such well).
Likewise, I can look at something and know whether it will fit in "X" space..even in another room...(this can be learned...sort of eye calibration...but I find it easy)...all of this makes me VERY good at parking a car, and parallel parking in particular..I can put a 15 passenger Dodge van into a standard parking place.

I do this Internet/WWW thing quite easily, though I am TERRIBLE at actual programming. Understanding 'how' to search the WWW and what the relationships of the programs on a computer are to each other (the VISIBLE ones, not the hidden system stuff and Dlls) come easy....I can locate, install, keep track of and work through most of the things that keep my computer running...This, I believe, is mostly thru use of "Inductive Logic", where the 'rules' are derived from many examples, rather than deductive logic.

......and, I can make gravy.

There's not a whole lot secret about me. But maybe y'all don't know that I knit historical reproduction socks for reenactors. My waiting list is stretching into August.

I am learning to belly dance. (just for fun, mind you)

I like to do my nails funky. At Christmas they were green with red stripes and little rhinestones. Why should gals with long nails have all the fun?

My first crush was on Adam Cartwright of Bonanza. I still think Pernell Roberts is sexy even if he is old enough to be my granddad.

I like good cigars and good whiskey. I am a pretty good cook although I have trouble flipping fried eggs and getting the rice just right.

I secretly listen to Friday Nite 80s on the radio going home from work. On Fridays, of course....

GREAT!!! I knew at one point or another someone would trigger something I haven't talked about!!! (Bill, you and I continue to have some strange similarities)

I'm excellent at something called "Time On Distance".....whether its from years of practice or a talent, I don't know, but I was trained to p;ay the game from an early age. What TOD is, is the ability to tell when two moving objects will meet. For example, you're driving along and a car is coming toward you....when will you pass?

This comes from practicing that was beat into me for sailboat racing. You need the ability to look at another boat and tell whether you are ahead or behind and where you will cross on a tack. Being able to keep a running update of this in your mind is a great advantage.

KimC,
1. Bring the amount of water specified on the rice box - less 1/4 cup to a boil. Add pinch of salt and, if you like, a pat of butter.
2. Add rice and stir once with a fork.
3. Cover tightly with lid and turn down to simmer.
4. DO NOT take the cover off at any time during cooking.
5. Remove from heat after 20 minutes.
6. Let stand for 5 minutes.
7. Remove lid and fluff with a fork.

Serve with Bill D's gravy.

I can't program a VCR, can't dance a step, have never played ANY card game...but can do a magic trick with a quarter that got me a lot of free beers when I played in bars.

Belly dancing reminds me that I do have one strange fact associated with me -- I once turned down an offer of marriage from an Arab princess.
I could have been Prince Ali-Ali-In-Come-Free (in more ways than one, she was incredibly rich). Her brother was the self-appointed broker. I am not actually sure it was marriage she was after.

From: Allan C.

I have only worn a watch once in the past three years (prior to that there was an eight year stretch without one) and yet I am usually quite punctual.

Whether on the internet, in a library or elsewhere, I am excellent at research.

Related to the research thing, I suppose, is that I am a finder of lost items. Just tell me what color or shape it is and I'll have it for you if you give me a general idea of where to search.

I am a fairly good cook. (Some people would use a more enthusiastic modifier.) I'd be better if I would read more cookbooks. Mostly, I cook by intuition. I know about spices and am not afraid to use 'em.

....Measure the rice. Rinse it with cold water at least twice. Add twice as much water as rice. Add salt. (Add a pinch or two of turmeric to make it a rich yellow, if you want.) Bring it all to a rapid boil stirring at times until large, fisheye bubbles form. Add a bit of butter or oil if you want. Give it a final stir. Cover tightly and turn off the burner. Never touch it again for fifteen to twenty minutes. (Long grain or Basmati rice takes longer than short grain.) Stir with fork and serve.

Like Bonnie, I enjoy canoeing and have a penchant for learning survival skills.

Use Minute Rice.......LOL! Liz the Squeak let slip on the animal noises thread that she can do Old MacDonald in Latin......now there is a talent!!

The real trouble with rice is that cooking it concerns how much moisture is in the dry rice, where is came from, the humidity, barometric pressure, your altitude, and no doubt phases of the moon. Short grain Japanese rice is supposed to be sticky. Basmati is not. Minute Rice is actually pretty terrible. If you are making Callas out of the cooked rice, then you want it to be sticky, also, so you can form it into balls.

Hmmm, that reminds me, Allan, I have an affinity for herbal medicine and houseplants, as well as some outdoor plants *talk* to me. I know which ones like to be next to each other and where they will grow the best within whatever house they live.

My brother taught horticulture at college and and i've never really studied it much at all. Yet, he has always marveled at how I have rare plants fromt he rain forest and elsewhere which bloom constantly. I remember in particularly, my old gardenia would not bloom, even would go yellow, if I didn't have it next to a certain other plant, I think it was my old hibiscus or plumbago.

Anyway, it's kind of neat...I just *feel* what is right or what they want and do it. Some people fuss over them too much. Mine suffer from benign neglect and thrive.:-)

I am a slave to the muse...when she calls I must act...

I have a hot temper and I suffer from the magic of mood swings.....

I have a tendency to hurt those I care about the most....especially in retaliation....

I am an asshole who sits in front of his computer all day, ignoring the world around him...or at least trying to escape that world...

I use anger and/or humor to cover up for my own feelings of inadequacy....

I could go on...but it would take a novel to fill....

Hmm... I once went several weeks (almost a month) without food, when I was 18 or so. Mainly because I refused to do any work that was 'beneath me,' which meant I had no money (And when I got money, I spent it on books). Unfortunately, those were the only places hiring. Boy, I was a catch, eh? I had a girlfriend at the time, too, heh.

Damn, I must be able to do something POSITIVE...

God, I can't think of anything. Mostly done stupid things...... Yup, I'm the human camel. That's it 'til I remember something better. :)

I think that might be paddled our asses all over Europe.

Honestly, that was before shammy bike pants were in style, so we wore blue jean cutoffs mostly. Now the problem with jeans is that they have this little ridge running down the middle of the crotch. Even though we "trained" we could barely walk the first week of the trip... until it toughened up down there. :-)

We were so young that we wondered what the round toilet looking thing without a seat was. We ended up using it to cool down our "Vin Rouge Ordinar". Later on we found out that it was a B.D.

We should organize a Mudcatter's canoe trip. That would be a hoot.
Allan C. can help carry the weight being that he is so strong.
Peter T. can be our environmentalist and no trace camping instructor
Bill D will be in charge of the map being that he is so great at measuring distances.
Kat can keep track of all the campers since that she is so good with numbers.
We can use CarolC as a tent pole being that she is so flexable.
JustaPicker will take the photos.
Skarpi can take care of our Wildness First Aid man. Bring lots of boo-boo strips & congnac Skarpi,
Catspaw can rig our sails when the wind picks up in our favor.
Kendall will be our repair guy. Remember to bring lots of duct tape Kendall.
Metchosin can scare off the bear if we run into problems.
Harpgirl can do all the water rescues.
Kim C, Guest petr, Audi, Seamus and dwditty can be the cooks. Seamus we will definitely need your chili recipe.
Mooh can catch us some fish. Mooh how are you with beer batter?
Rick can do our duck calls.
We can rope our beer to chill on floater Capt Bob.
Bert can facilitate the campfire songcircle.
Melani can be one of our sternmen.
Night Wing, Aggie Bethie, Fibula Mattock, Matt, Mary, SINSULL, MMario, Sorcha, Harpgirl Roger the Skiffer, Amergin, Reen, Murray, Big Chuck and Lepus Rex can help collect wood and paddle
Hope I didn't forget anyone.

I promise not to make the menu too high in fiber. Although it is good to eat healthy, out in the woods sometimes that isn't such a great thing for those who are not use to it.

I once spent the summer working at the largest Sewage plant in Europe - and still have a tendancy to to look at swage plants as I pass to see what type they are . And to sniff the air and say things like - "it must have rained heavily - the storm tanks aren't working well"

I have an ability to find my way back no matter how difficult it was to find my way there.

I spent a fair amount of time working with the student charities in Edinburgh years ago and I have been taken down the Royal mile in a carriage pulled by agricultural students trying to mow down the pipe band in front.

I have lost 4 stone in weight scince last June and I am working on the rest. This is the first time I've admitted the actual amount to any one other than Tim as I hate a fuss. I was astounded when someone chatted me up last week.

All the best J

Thanks all for your tips on the rice. Usually I just let Mister cook it. He can get it right just about every time.

Mets, I want to learn Highland Dancing. I am 33, in good shape and getting better. But you're scaring me! ;) (A few years ago I got a bad case of bursitis in my knee learning Irish step dancing, because I overdid it. I am more careful about it now, but I am in better shape than I was then.)

While we're on the subject I ought to tell you a few fun things about Mister. He is tall and thin but don't let him fool you. He can easily carry my 120 lbs up the stairs and back. He is hands-down the smartest person I know, because he reads a lot. He can tell you almost anything about American history, and almost anything about any firearm ever made, especially muzzleloaders.

He sews his own reenacting clothes and does a fine job.

Like Kendall, he can fix just about everything.

In his early 20s he lived in a tent in the woods and actually trapped for money.

He can play a little Flamenco guitar. Will say he's not very good but he lies like a rug.

Only Shakespeare he knows: Yea, though I look old, yet I am strong and lusty... :)

Bonnie I am SO down with a canoe trip! I do know how to cook over a fire. I been wanting to go canoeing for EVER! Haven't been since I was a teenager and goshdarnit I live right across from the feckin' lake. When do we leave?!!?!

English Jon, what form does your Synesthesia take? I just read about it in the newest Smithsonian. It sounds (Iknow this sounds odd) really quite interesting, and like something I wish I could experience. I'll volunteer to string the electric fence around the camp at night so people can sleep easy and seeing Allan C's so strong, he can carry the canisters of bear stop, my case of Single Malt and the solar collectors and ancillary equipment.

Mind you, we won't tell the rest of the group that the fence won't stop a determined bear and we'd better warn them to be careful where they take a whizz in the dark (personal experience) or someone besides me is going to get the nickname of Sparky.

Here are some other little facts:

I loved playing with fire when I was a kid:

I once came down from the attic after we had been throwing gunpowder (we undid a bunch of black cats) into a candle with no eyebrows and my bangs burnt off. My mom simply asked me what I had been doing, and what the smell was. Then I got it.

We used to make our own fireworks.

Got into a match fight with my twin the day my dad went into the hospital for cancer surgery. We were supposed to be doing our homework and waiting to get picked up for swim practice (We were in 5th grade). We couldn't find one match in the laundry room. Later we saw smoke coming from the vents. We put it out before the firemen came. However, when my mom came home from visiting my dad in the hospital the neighbor offered my mom a stiff drink BEFORE she went down the street to our house. I think he saved the family from additional disasters and breakdowns.

Of course I was always the one up at 5:30 in the morning when we went camping to start the campfire and get it going real good. I love to chop wood too.

So, If I can come along can I please be in charge of the fire building! I now know fire safety! :-O I promise that no autoharps or banjos will go up in flame.

JAB, lol, are you an Aries, by any chance? My friends always ask me to start and tend the fire..they thnk I am good at it from being a "fire sign"!

When I was about 3 years old, I decided to give my best friend, Kelly Johnson, across the street, a haircut. we hid the cutoff hair under the bed, thinking we were so clever, that our mothers would never notice the odd bald patches all over his head!

Almost everyday, I played dress-up and had quite a flare for acting out all characters from my imagination with appropriate accents, as well as entertain my parents with dancing. Still danced quite a bit until a few years ago.

Stones talk to me, too, like the houseplants, when I am beading, esp., but also when I arrange my collection.
