Well, as i recall, the lyrics that grandpa sang were a little more explicit. Must be a thing from the merchant marines.

Irecall just about as much as you do from my Dad, but typically he only knew a little bit (or my Mom wouldn't let him sing more). His version went "DIVE between their legs" but that ain't too different!

Sorcha - my brothers taught me bow-legged. Popeye was a randy kind of guy! And yes, I have heard the "swim between their knees" thing. My brother will know.

I've been searching the web a bit to no avail outside of finding info on it being a common toast and a lot of references to "Jaws" because Robert Shaw says it. I did find a few "interesting" sites while searching "bowlegged women" on the iNBC engine!

Colonel Potter sang this song in one of his less-than-lucid moments on MASH, and it was indeed "bowlegged" women ... "and swim between their legs." As to whether Harry Morgan is a folkie, let someone else start that thread. Can't help wondering about Spaw's discovered websites on this topic. Are there now support groups for bowlegged women? Or has this song launched some sites by dedicated fetishists?

Drew Carey is known in the UK if you watch obscure Digital TV channels where they show re-runs of 'Whose line is it anyway', the American version. Drew is the chairperson, the part taken in the UK by Clive Anderson.

What the hell else he's ever done is a mystery to me.

In the US, Drew Carey was best known for the "Drew Carey Show," which was a sort of late night (near prime time?) soap opera in which he played a middle-manager sort (kind of a Dilbert) at a large department store in Milwaukee(?) or maybe it was Philadelphia(?).

Principal antagonists on that show included his "manager" (the pointy-haired boss) who was "very British" with no comprehension of management, the secretary to pointy-haired boss also known as "fat broad," an incredibly "evil" b***h who married his idiot brother, a couple of blue-collar "intellectually challenged" friends, and of course one or two attractive good hearted semi-lovers with whom he was "Dilbertish-successful." Story lines centered on swilling beer.

The show was originated to pick up on the "genre popularity" of the semi-hit "That 70s Show" which is another show that most outside the US, or any who actually watch TV in the daytime, will never have heard of.

Recently Carey was picked up as the new host for the long-running lowestcommondenomenator daytime show "The Price Is Right" where he's generating lots of yawns. The show will quite probably disappear and go back to reruns with the previous hosts as soon as the writers settle their strike.

His characteristic style implies he'd rather be on "Prairie Home Companion."

He's written a couple of (perhaps slightly semi-biographical) short novels that three or four people may have read, and pretends to be an "ordinary guy(?)" who is "really something of an intellectual(??)" "feigning(?) illiteracy" for the entertainment value. It's difficult to tell which is the real Drew, and which is the role, indicating at least moderate talent at portraying/implying what he isn't(?).

BUT ON THE ORIGINAL SUBJECT: The video that was linked has now disappeared, and nobody posted the lyric used there. ($@#%!)

For the record, and for when this thread pops up again in four or five years, the only lyric at davetnova's link (04 Feb 08 - 09:44 AM) is as shown in the first post of this thread. It doesn't appear to be the same one previously linked, as the new one is a solo semi-performance.

Unbelievable. I LOVE THIS SONG. I've loved it all my life. Well, most of my life. Let's not get hysterical....I just Googled it for the hell of it...and got here.   I, too, first heard it when Col Potter sang it on MASH, and was instantly, utterly smitten by it -- I mean I was...beSOTTED with the song -- and have been singing it ever since.

but only when I am truly, truly happy.

There are only two songs that I know of that you simply cannot stay in a bad mood or get depressed while singing them. This is one of them. The other one is, "That's Why the Lady is a Tramp." I mean it -- try it some time. Just TRY and sing a big Sinatra finish to "That's Why the Lady..." badda bada badaaaaaah...THAT'S why the lady...baddoo badoooooo....THAT'S why the Lady/

IS/

a tramp.."

The tune used on MASH and on the Drew Carey show is "Blaze Away" a march, ca 1900, that was popular during WWII. I have been told that the phrase "bowlegged women" was a euphemism for "bare naked women".   The song just repeats and repeats.

The march was popular during WWI (not WWII). There is a song "Isn't it a Pitty She's Only One Titty" that uses the same tune.

Drew Carey's show was set in Cleveland, which is hard to mistake since Cleveland is a recurrent theme. He does portray a middle manager with a boss at first unseen but then fired and replaced by Craig Ferguson. His nemesis is the boss's secretary Mimi. His two closest friends are idiots portrayed by Dietrich Bader and Ryan Stiles. I lost interest after finding out that Carey was a raving republican in real life and I started seeing political themes in the show. At first it was quite funny, as Bader and Stiles were hilarious and Carey didn't yet think of himself as important. Carey is one of those unfortunate comics in whom depression and anger are the basis for a lot of his humor. It's somewhat ameliorated by his admirable loyalty to his friends and colleagues in the business, like Kathy Kinney (Mimi)who might not otherwise have had much in the way of acting careers.

Boy, does that bring back memories. I once had an Explorer Scout leader, circa 1954, who sang that song on camping trips, much to the chagrin of other adult leaders. He said he had learned it while attending Oxidental College, in Los Angeles area. It might even date back to vaudeville days, from what he told us.

The 2009 movie Coraline uses "smimming with bow-legged women" in the Spink And Forcible trapeze sketch. I might have to wait for the CD to see how they wove it into the skit. I'd love to have more that one verse from this little old treasure.

Reminds me of a lymerick:

There once was a lady begat
Triplets named Nat, Tat and Pat.
'Twas fun in the breeding,
But hell in the feeding,
There wasn't a spare tit for Tat.

Try the tune "Repaz Band" from 1920 - in MIDI file. If you're old enough, you heard it at the circus. Completely different words.

I love this song, and I had always thought there was more to it, as I roamed aimlessly through the internet looking for the rest of it, I found other souls apparently fruitlessly searching for it as well.

It's one of my happy songs, right up there with "Rye Whiskey" and "Bom Bom da du le ah they took my pants away!" ...:D

Here's a midi file of BLAZE AWAY, a march by Abe Holzmann, from 1901. I believe the opening theme of this march is used as the tune for "I love to go swimmin' with bowlegged women...."

The same tune is also used (or can be used) for "Today is the day they give babies away with a half a pound of tea....," and maybe some other parodies.

Guys, I too have been going crazy with this song over the years. My mother sang it when I was young. Even as I obtained the enlightenment of adulthood, she would stop and hum the rest driving me batty. I would poke and prod her but to no avail. I also heard it on MASH sung by Col Potter in shower. This is how my mother sang it...

I love to go swimming with bowlegged women
and dive between their legs,
they're round in the middle and shaped like a fiddle....

and of course this is where she would always stop telling me it's much to dirty to finish. Thanks Mom.

It seems to me there's a mix going on hear. This was a party song in my college days (1948-52)University of Maine.

Whopsie doodle, I'm off my noodle.
I don't wear trusts any more.
My rupture's gone. My rupture's gone.

I love to go swimmin with bowlegged wimmin
And dive right between their legs.
My rupture's gone. My rupture's gone.

Today is the day the give babies away
With a half of pound of tea.
The tea is no good and the babies are wood
My rupture's gone. My rupture's gone.

After raising enough steins to dear old Maine, we didn't care if things didn't seem to "fit tight."

Love this thread. Thanks for all the info, folks! My uncle taught me this song as a young boy and I've been wondering about it.

To clear up the inaccurate account of Drew Carey and the Drew Carey Show from JohninKansas: The Drew Carey Show was a popular show that ran for 9 years and over 200 episodes in the US. It had absolutely nothing to do with That 70s Show, being as the former came out four years before the latter, not the other way around as you've been told. Although the last few years fell flat, it was consistently in the top 25 television shows during years 2 through 5. It was set in Cleveland, Carey's hometown, and helped a lot of people launch their careers.

Craig Ferguson, the Scottish comedian, got his American break on the show. Other show costars are still on television, most noticeably on Cougar Town (Christa Miller) and Two And A Half Men (Ryan Stiles).

Drew Carey is also a philanthropist and has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local libraries, something those of us from his home state are proud of. Additionally, he's an award-winning comedian and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When he has the time he promotes soccer to an American audience by working as a photojournalist for the US Soccer Team. He is also beginning to focus on advocacy journalism, for which he's also won awards.

The best thing about him? He's not from Kansas.
