29 Jan 01 - 05:10 AM (#384620) Subject: Sally Wheatley From: GUEST,Dave, Bridge Folk Club, Newcastle upon Tyne I was surprised to see the words of the Tyneside song Bonny Sally Wheatley attributed to Alex Glasgow. The song was actually written in the late 1800's by Joe Wilson, the Tyneside Bard of great fame. The songs is still very popular and can be often heard. |

29 Jan 01 - 06:24 AM (#384644) Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: Dave (Bridge) Joe wilson was a prolific writer, in fact I am sitting here with his Tyneside Songs and Drolleries book and there are 472 pages of works by him. Alex Glasgow and Bob Fox may have arranged the tune but the words are 100% those of Joe Wilson. |

29 Jan 01 - 10:16 AM (#384751) Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: Ritchie Well I'm most depressed and sad, that is until I heard that Bob Fox & Stu Luckley are appearing together in march at the Buddle. I emailed Bob back in dec and he said that they would not be appearing together again ! Ha ,so if he was wrong about that ! I went to see the Doonans and they did a cracking version of 'a miners life', which up until then I had not heard of. Amazingly, at the guitar lessons I now attend it's one of the songs we are learning. When I can play it confidently, I am going to claim that I wrote it, along with 'A hand full of songs' that Art introduced me to. I'll probably claim a couple of others as well. Enjoy the music, keep it live. Regards Ritchie 'the lone stranger' |

29 Jan 01 - 10:53 AM (#384806) Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: A Wandering Minstrel Dave Hang on to that book mate they are very rare! Does your copy have the little sayings scattered about such as "cobwebs of comfort:when a man blacks yer eye then tells you he didn't mean to hit ye se hard" My own copy is very worn and probably needs rebinding. Folks get the Alex Glasgow link from the "Joe Lives" musical as I said in the other thread Glad to hear that the Bridge is still going strong. Someone further down was asking after the Ranters |

30 Jan 01 - 05:01 AM (#385515) Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: Ritchie Dave, I'll gladly call in to the Bridge as soon as I can and I'll request 'a miners life'. At the moment tho' I won't be able to well not just yet anyway, cos' am gannin' tee an art class ivory monday neet, an' it doesn't finish till aboot nine o clock. It was funny how it happened, my wife wanted to enrol in a reflexology class and I went along and enrolled in the arts class just to be able give her a lift there and back. Only to find that now her class has been cancelled which means that I go back and forth on my own. If, after my guitar lessons on tuesday nights, I don't improve enough to be able to perform a song or two at 'The Bridge' I'll do you a couple of drawings for you to hang on the wall on folk nights. regards Ritchie 'do you know what it is yet?'

So since when has Gateshead been in Ireland,(nyaaa) It makes me sick, the Irish are always claiming songs that arent Irish, so come on ,give the English credit for some good songs. |

28 Mar 07 - 05:31 PM (#2009935) Subject: RE: Sally Wheatley From: The Vulgar Boatman Alex wrote the now popular tune, as recorded by the Dubliners (!). The earlier tune is still going the rounds - take yer pick. I know Alex was somewhat amused and (for him)rather impressed to have one of his tunes taken as traditional. KYBTTS |
