Does anyone knows the chords of 'Burning Times' - a Scottish song about the burning of witches? I've been looking for it since a long time. And if anyone knows a recording of the song, I'm very interested to hear where I can find it. phantommask@yahoo.com

Sorry, no chords, but this is the Home Page for these posted lyrics which credit Leigh Ann Hussey, copyright 1988, at (415)548-0613. Also says (Opus 1:161/93). Maybe if you called she would give them to you?

(These are two different sets of lyrics, not sure if it's one of these, or yet another........)

I think the Hussey one is a rebuttal to Charlie Murphey's Buurning Times - which is the set in the DT. I can't find a tune or chords to either of them.

Hello,

I saw there are more songs called Burning Times. I mean the song which begins with "In the cool of the evening..." the refrain's got goddesses in it.

I still don't have the chords, so maybe you can help me out? Thanx!

Artisan used to do a version of it, at least that's where I first heard it. This is actually likely to be very useful for me cos I'm doing about witchcraft for my AS Theatre Studies exam piece.

BURNING TIMES/CHANT
-Charles Murphy

In the cool of the evening, they used to gather, 'neath stars in
the meadow, circled near an old oak tree.
At the times appointed by the seasons of the Earth, and the phases
of the moon.
In the center of them stood a woman, equal with the others, and
respected for her worth.
One of the many we call the Witches, the teachers and the keepers
of the wisdom of the Earth
The people grew through the knowledge she gave them, herbs to heal
their bodies, spells to make their spirits whole.
Hear them chanting healing incantations, calling forth the Wise
Ones, celebrating in dance and song

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna

There were those who came to power through domination, and they
bonded in the worship of a dead man on a cross.
They sought control of the common people by demanding allegiance
to the church of Rome.
And the Pope declared the Inquisition, it was a war against the
women whose power they feared.
In this Holocaust against the nature peoples, a million European
women died.

And the tales are told of those who, by the hundreds, holding
together, chose their deaths in the sea.
Chanting the praises of the Mother Goddess, a refusal of betrayal,
women were dying to be free.

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna

Now the Earth is a witch, and the men still burn her! Stripping
her down with mining and the poisons of their wars.
While to us the Earth is a healer, a teacher, a mother.
She's the weaver of the web of life that keeps us all alive.

She gives us the vision to see through the chaos.
She gives us the courage, it is our will to survive!

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna....(repeat ad lib)

I was sure that this was in either Rise Up Singing or its predecessor, Winds of the People, but I was WRONG! WotP has more songs by Charlie Murphy than are in RUS, but not that one. It probably WAS on the mimeo'd song sheets that were the predecessor of WotP!

I know (or at least I DID know) Charlie Murphy when he lived in Phila, ~1978-81 or so. He moved to Seattle, where he still lives, as far as I know. I could probably get hold of his address, email, or phone # without going through TOO many people. I also have this on vinyl, if it still plays--I was not noted for taking excellent care of my vinyl!

I can clearly remember the way the chorus sounds--it's kind of a chant, with a clearly defined meter, but mostly one tone, at least on the first couple of reps. "Diana" does go down, then it comes back up again. Then after those first 2x thru, he raises the pitch. The melody of the verse I don't think I could reproduce accurately, but probably my friend Joan, or another friend could.

Oh, I think the number of dead in the song, as Charlie wrote it, was TEN million!

If you want me to try to get hold of Charlie, email me at Marymac90@aol.com

This song is well received when sung unaccompanied or with just a constant driving/throbbing rythmn on guitar or drum

Roy Bailey uses the guitar as a percussion instrument, banging the rhythm on the strings/bridge, and I do too. But you've got to finger the chords if you do this, otherwise it would just sound awful! The chords I use are:

In the [Am]cool of the evening, they used to gather,
'Neath the [Em]stars in the meadow circled [Am]near an old oak tree.
At the times appointed by the seasons of the [Em]earth and the phases of the [Am]moon.

[Em]Herbs to heal their bodies, spells to [Am]make their spirits whole.
Hear them chanting healing incantations,
[Em]Calling forth the wise ones, celeb[Am]rating in dance and song.

Susanne(skw)'s page (click) has these lyrics. Be sure to check her notes on the song at her Website. I have to say the lyrics are a little more strongly anti-Rome than I'd like to see. The Roman Catholic Church of five centuries ago is quite different from the one I belong to now - but some people sing songs like this and condemn me and other Catholics for something done five centuries ago. Charlie Murphy also wrote Light Is Returning - I have an easier time with that one.

Charlie Murphy is a folksinger/songwriter/organizer who lives on an island in the vicinity of Seattle. He is a native of Catonsville, Maryland. He and I and four or more turned a shanty shack (Govans - Balto.) into a musical haven house back in the day (mid-70s). Charlie was a Dylan-freak, and he poured himself into his singing. He was into T-Groups and self-discovery and I believe that he found a good part of what he was looking for. I was delighted to learn just this past year that he had written "Burning Times". It seems to have turned into an anthem of sorts.

I hadn't been in touch with Charlie for well over two decades but reached him this past winter and enjoyed the catching up.

Most of the people from that house keep a musical dimension in their lives. Ralph Reinoldi plays guitar and other plectrum instruments behind hishonor the Mayor in "O'Malley's March".

John Strausbaugh co-produced a documentary on the late Josie McDermott (flute player from the West of Ireland). More recently John writes and publishes controversial articles and books from New York City. He seems to be some sort of anarchist with an avid following though I am not really qualified to say.

Back in the day, we had oil heat and no insulation and the Bay froze over (cutting the supply) so we often burst the water pipes, but we laughed and sang thru the whole night long - seen the summer sunrise in the mornin'...

A couple of corrections: It's Inanna, not Inarna. The r is the result of the "intrusive r" found in the British/Celtic isles. And it's "spells", not "smells to make their spirits whole."

It's also Demeter, not Demitra.

The version of history presented in the song is a bit confused. The numbers are way exaggerated, but that was common folklore at the time and Murphy can't really be faulted for not looking deeper (the total death toll was still horrific). While the Pope may have started the witch-craze, he didn't subsequently control it, it wasn't just done by the Inquisition, and the Protestants were just as bad at persecuting witches in the areas they dominated (like Scotland). The main text for witch-hunters was the Malleus Maleficarum, which the Inquisition rejected on theological grounds.

It is also rather dubious whether most witches believed anything like the Wiccan gospel behind the song. Carlo Ginzburg's Ecstasies gives a much more complicated picture, and there are large parts of Europe where "witches" must have believed things that even he didn't identify.

Leigh Ann Hussey's life and death http://leighann.nithaus.org/

yes, MMario, Hussey's song is a rebuttal: "Lately I've been seeing an outrageous escalation of figures from the burning times, now we're up to 9.5 million! And there seems to be some sort of perverse 'we're more persecuted than the Jews' mentality behind it. Completely ignoring the fact that the burning times killed some large number of people over 4 centuries, where the Nazi Holocaust killed its millions in a matter of 5 YEARS. Also, I've been pissed off lately by Charlie Murphey's 'Burning Times' song, which has propagated the 9 million figure and has in it lines like 'The Earth is a Witch/ and the Men still burn Her'. So, in the good old-fashioned tradition of lectures set to music, I offer the following verses. I need to see how many people they offend before I sing them at Esotericon."
