From: GUEST,Len Wallace

Hello friends,

Years ago I heard Bobby Watt recite the story of the Effin Bee. Based on a BBC interview. It begins, "There once was a man from Effin who was stung by a big Effin bee..."

Does anyone have the whole story?

Many thanks.

I hope so. What you've written sounds promising.

I used to know it, but it is now long gone. All I can remember are the first two lines and the last line. The version I knew began:

He kept bees in the small town of Effin
An Effin beekeeper was he
He met a sad end and his corpse was exhibited in the museum where the Effin people would come to view his remains:

Stung to death by the big Effin bee!

Try a personal message to Ted from Australia. I think he may know it or else he should be able to get hold of it from a mutual friend in Cairns.

As told to me by my mate, Johnny Mack from Darwin.

In the great town of Effin,
There lived a Storekeeper
He kept bees,
An Effin Beekeeper was he.

One day this big Effin Beekeeper
Was Stung to death by a big Effin Bee.
Now the big Effin Beekeepers wee Effin Wife
Hor the big Effin Police she ran
For no one can swat a big Effin Bee
Like a big Effin Policeman can

Now this big Effin Policeman, he done his nut
and ran down the big Effin Street
In his hand was a big Effin Baton
And he had big Effin Boots on his feet. When he caught up with the big Effin Bee
He twisted the Effin Bee's wings
But this Effin Big Bee got its own back
For this Big Effin Bee had two stings!

Now the Effin folk made him a hero
And they often go back there to see.
They just stare in amazement
At the Effin Big Policeman
Stung to death by an Effin Big Bee!

Cheers

Bugsy

Looking further, the version I knew has been posted to the forum previously. It's by Matt McGuinn:

Bugsy, I would have thought Johnny Mack would have had the same source as Ted and I - Alex Green when he lived in Darwin - but he must have gotten it from elsewhere or else adapted it. Green omitted the last verse as posted by susanne.

Cheers, Stewie.

I've not long left a msg asking for the words and then found the MP3!!!
The words dont do justice to the story as Matt McGinn has lots of pauses and emphases that aren't apparent here.
I didn't do the whiole explanatory bit as I didn't know what he was saying at the end of it! LOL

Goad, jist checked the dates of previous posttings...5 years ago!!!

Explanatory start..
There's a cute town called Effen .....jist outside Edinburgh, jist 800 miles outside Edinburgh….........it's in France!
It's famous for it's honey so there's an awfie lot of bees

                            The Big Effen Bee
                                           Matt McGinn

"He kept bees in the old town of Effen,
An Effen bee-keeper was he,
And one day this wee Effen bee-keeper
Was stung by a big Effen bee

Now this big Effen bee-keeper's
Wee effen wife for the big Effen polis she ran
For there's nobody can sort out a big Effen bee
Like a big Effen polisman can

Now the big Effen polisman he did his nut
And he ran down the main Effen street
In his haun wis a big Effen bat
He'd big Effen boots oan his feet

Now the polis got hold of this big Effen bee
And he twisted the Effen bee's wings
But this Effen bee got his own back
For this big Effen bee had 2 stings

Now they're baith in the Effen museum
And the Effen folk oaffen come see
The remains of the big Effen polis
Stung to death by the big Effen Bee

Effin Bee. That rang a very large bell, but it didn't have anything to do with a song or an insect. It took a few moments for me to dredge it out of my memory.

In the late 1930s, I was a little squirt. My older sister (by two years) was given a wonderful doll by a friend of the family. Mary was ecstatic! It was an Effanbee doll, about the size of a toddler, complete with real hair and a whole trunk full of clothes. Mary spent many an hour playing with this doll, dressing it in different outfits. Great gift for a little girl!

It was called an "Effanbee doll," made by the F & B toy company, I believe.

CLICKY.

Just a little nostalgia trip. Now back to our regular broadcast.

Not a version, but there's a song (can't remember the author) about veteran east Clare piper and fiddle player, the late Martin Rocheford, who was a keen bee-keeper.
He drove across-country to acquire a queen bee for is hive and, having carefully selected one, started on the drive home. It being a warm day, he stopped for a pint and and a bite to eat and, returning to the car he decided to have a nap before resuming his journey. He let the bee loose in the car "to give her some exercise", and fell asleep. After a short while he was awoken by a tickling on his nose and, taking of his cap, he swatted his 'investment' flat.
