Lyr ADD: Rutabaga Boogie

I go pretty far back with Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kalleck. When they were part of "The Good Old Persons" playing at the Freight and Salvage club in Berkeley, California. They wrote a great song with Paul Shelasky and put it on their first album " The Good Old Persons", probably on Bay Records. Does anyone know the lyrics to " Rutabaga Boogie"? I sure would be tickled if you did. Seth from China

Seth, this is such a great title that if no one comes up with the real words, we ought to write a new version!

I, too, have been searching for years for the lyrics to the Rutabaga Boogie --- ever since I heard it performed in the bay area over 30 years ago. Can anyone help me with this? I would greatly appreciate it!

I got rutabaga skins for the clothes that I wear.
Rutabaga extract to wash my hair.
Rutabaga vapor instead of gas.
Rutabaga paper to wipe my ... nose.
Do the rutabaga boogie.
Come along with me.
With a fresh rutabaga pulled right off the tree.

Do the rutabaga boogie.
Do it all the time.
With a fresh rutabaga pulled right off the vine.

Lyrics written by Paul Shelasky

It's all I could find. If this is it or part of it, the title is "Do the Rutabaga Boogie".

The album has been re-released on CD on the Spruce and Maple label. It was just reviewed in the current issue of the Old Time Herald. It is available on her web site.

There are two videos of the song on YouTube:

Between the two you might figure out the lyrics. But they're both fast and sort of garbled.

RUTABAGA BOOGIE
Written by either Stavro Arrgolus or Paul Shelasky and his Musical Zombies SOURCE 1 SOURCE 2

Well, I don't like spinach as a gen'ral rule
There's one little veggie makes me blow my cool
It's not like turnip or a summer squash
The old rutabaga from the rutabaga bush

CHORUS
Do the rutabaga boogie, do it all the time
With a fresh rutabaga pulled right off the vine
Do the rutabaga boogie, come and dance with me
With a fresh rutabaga pulled right off the tree

I like rutabaga hot dogs and rutabaga stew
Rutabaga cornflakes and wonton too
Rutabaga borscht and rutabaga cake (or tofu and steak)
Rutabaga french fries, mm, they're a kick (or rutabaga minced is a layer cake)

I have rutabaga skins for the clothes I wear
Rutabaga extract to wash my hair
Rutabaga vapors instead of gas
Rutabaga paper to wipe my nose

[skipped by A Touch of Grass, done by Good Ol' Persons]
Well, I built my car out of rutabaga steel
Rutabaga hubcaps in ev'ry wheel
Rutabaga tires and rutabaga treads
Rutabagas growin' in the cylinder heads

Well, a rutabaga hat and a rutabaga tie
Shut my pants with a rutabaga fly
Rutabaga patches all over my knees
Rutabaga jock strap, bee bee dees

Correction to second verse, line two
"Rutabaga cornflakes and wonton soup"

Correction to the last line, last verse above:
Rutabaga jock straps and BVDs (BVD is a brand of men's undershorts)

Years ago Sidesaddle (all women's bluegrass band) did a cover of that song and made the last line:
Rutabaga bra straps and IUDs.

Folkishly yours,

Bob

I heard this song ONE TIME about 100 years ago on the university station out of Berkley or somewhere like that. tried my best to BURN the lyrics into my head as they passed by on tat one listening.....

I swear I heard somewhere there something like

Gotta rutabaga pants an rutabaga shoes,
When I'm feeling kind down
I sing the rutabaga blues

....which, even if I imagined it, will fit in there just behind that last verse...

Listen to the version from Paul Shelasky (click (the Mad Music link above is now dead)

There is a song called Rutabaga Boogie by the Ohio band Good Company which I can't track down a recording of. Their version is by an R. Smith (probably bass guitarist Bob Smith, if I had to guess). See the release here and some discussion about the band here.
