Help: Who were the Galtee Rangers?

Subject: Who were the Galtee Rangers?
From: Tom D.

I have recently become acquainted with an Irish tune (a reel) called "The Galtee Rangers." I was wondering who the Galtee Rangers were. Does anyone have any leads? I've tried a few searches and have come across a few references to other tunes with Galtee in the title, but have not found anything about the Galtee Rangers.

Thank you,

Tom D.

All I found was Christy Moore's song on 'The Galtee Mountain Boy', who "joined the flying column in 1916" (were they really developed as early as that? I'd have thought 1917 or '18 more likely). Maybe there were more like him? Just a stab in the dark, though ...

ANyone out there with a more intimate knowledge of Irish military regiments particularly in the British army please correct me if I'm wrong. To answer your question, I believe the Galtee Rangers were an Irish militia unit. They were most likely a regiment of foot (Infantry). Without a regimental number or any historical reference, this is the best answer I can give and I apologize because it is a poor one. I do hope this helps. Kindest reguards, Neil

Susanne, who would let the facts spoil a good story.

I think Irish sergeant is right there. (Unless they were a pack of dogs - or maybe both.)

As forv the flying columns, Susanne's right, and 1916 was far too early. More like 1919. And they weren't called Galtee Rangers either - Third Tipperary Brigade, and my father was one of them. (The rest of the song is accurate enough.)

From what I know of Irish tune titles the likeliest explanation is that the Galtee Rangers were a hunt cf. The Kinnegad Slashers.

Good Luck.

Is it possible we're all correct? I based my theory on the fact there were several ranger units in the British army notabley the Third Antrim Militia Regiment, 2nd Battalion which was called "The Connaught Rangers." Kindest reguards, Neil

Neil you are correct to say that the term "Rangers" is used in a military context in the North of Ireland. There is also the Royal Irish Rangers (a recording of whose pipe band I have) and of course one of the football teams most supported in Ulster is the Glasgow Rangers. I just wondered whether the word had such strong military associations in the South.

Good Luck.

The Galtee Mountains are in Eire so probably not associated with N. Ireland. The area is famous for its cheese, but what that has to do with Rangers, search me!

"The Galtee Mountains are in Eire so probably not associated with N. Ireland."

You'd better not say that kind of thing round the Galtees, it might be misunderstood. It's a very Republican part of Tipperary.

I tried a search for Galtee Rangers on Google - and after pages of references to the tune, up came a site about the song A long Way to Tipperary, with a lot about The Connaught Rangers regiment, which was in fact stationed at the time of the FirstWorld War in Tipperary Town, which is hard by the Galtees.

So maybe there's a connection there - perhaps it was a nickname, perhaps they had a pack of hounds with the name, perhaps the tune started out as Connaught Rangers, and it was changed for patriotic reasons.

Anyway, it's an interesting site in itself about the song and its history.

I don't think that they would be a military outfit. If they were, it wasn't within the British army.

There is a dance called the Faughart Lancers, maybe it's a similar sort of thing - just the name of a dance.

I have never heard of the Galtee Rangers, most of the above answers sound possible (except the military one). Both my grandfathers were in the Connaught Rangers and they enlisted in Belfast, during the first world war there were recruiting stations all over and all regiments became fairly well known. I am leaning towards "Guest's response" that the Galtee Rangers could very well be a club of fox hunters or maybe even sort of park rangers keeping the Galtees free of poachers or poteen makers. On the sports side they could also have been a hurling team ?. Just guessing.

My thanks to you all for your suggestions and contributions to the inquiry. It remains a great tune. I have so far turned up three 'culinary' type references to the Galtee Mountains, one pertaining to a type of sausage for which the region is known, another to the cheese from the area, and a third for a species of bee found there and the fine honey it produces. However, still no definitive hit on who the Galtee Rangers were.

McGrath, I meant geographically speaking, not politically. I have walked through the Glen of Aherlow, so I know where the Galtees are - unless there's another lot up in the North!

I have lived in and been around Ireland a long time, sorry I have never heard of the Galtee Rangers, could be the name is associated with a hunting or field club.
The name Rangers has always been used by football teams in Ireland, our top GAA clubs have used the name for over 100 years, Crossmaglen Rangers, Nemo Rangers [Cork] etc, so in Ireland, it has always been a useful tag for, sport, army regiments, and countless other activities.

This is probably a stupid question, but - assuming that the Galtee Rangers is a tune, without lyrics to give any clue as to meaning - is it possible that the tune was originally the "Galtee Ranges" - i.e. referring to the mountain range itself?

Just a thought, and I'm happy to get me coat and leave quietly...

Galtee used to be (god forbid it still is!) that horrible rubbery imitation Cheddar that was all you could get under the name of "cheese" in Ireland back in the 80s. Rangers (at least in Glasgow) wear blue, so Galtee Rangers should be their added- dye blue- veined version of that gastronomic abomination.
