Hoo-ray! (and he doesn't look a day over 150). Seriously, thanks for posting this, Jonathan. It's a glum day here, and I need something to celebrate.

His grave is in the Sedgwick Pie (he was married to a Sedgwick) in the Stockbridge, Massachusetts cemetery. Very simple marker with his birth and death dates and the words, "Editor, English and Scottish Ballads."

Child's 10-volume work was published between 1882 and 1898, and it's still fascinating reading. His notes tell the stories of his 305 ballads in great depth, but this is not dry, academic verbiage that puts you to sleep. He gives only the English versions of the ballads, but he tells how they are related to ballads and stories from many lands. If you haven't read Child, pick at least one of his ballads and read through everything he's written on it. You'll be amazed.

Also on the gravestone:
"What doth the Lord require
of thee but to do justly and
to love mercy and to walk
humbly with thy GOD"

(From the Book of Micah, that's my favorite passage in the whole of the Old Testament!)
