Popular in the early 1900s as a studio instrument, the Stroh fell into disuse when recording technology improved. It is still being made, and played, in Bihor, Romania. When we purchased a Stroh this year (made in Rosia in 2000), it was strung with an E string in the G position. The other strings were similar in diameter to standard violin strings. Though we restrung it so I could play it right away, we are still wondering about the original tuning. Thanks for any enlightenment! Cathryn
