Subject: Most '........' Dylan song - your vote!
From: Little Hawk

A subject dear to my heart! All y' gotta do is pick out of Dylan's almost endless catalog the following:

1. Most ANGRY Dylan song:

2. Most sarcastic Dylan song:

3. Most ribald Dylan song:

4. Most mystical Dylan song:

5. Most humorous Dylan song:

6. Longest Dylan song:

7. Shortest Dylan song:

8. Most brilliant Dylan lyric:

9. Worst Dylan song of all time:

10. Best Dylan love song:

11. Most memorable Dylan song:

12. Happiest Dylan song:

13. Least comprehensible Dylan song:

NO COVER TUNES, PLEASE! These have gotta be originals. Trad songs can sometimes be included, however, if he changed them enough...which he often does.

I know what you're saying...WHO CARES!!!!

Well, if that's how you feel, then be like the 50% who didn't vote in your last election...and bitch about the results afterward! Actually, this is at least as significant an exercise as your last election on a number of levels, so git out thar and vote! Yeee-hah!

Never was much of a Dylan fan (gasp!) but every time I hear "My Back Pages" I see myself in college, so serious about everything and so angry about so much. "Ah, but I was so much older then -- I'm younger than that now."

So what does that make the song for me, Dylan's most embarrassing?

Khandu, you really are making me eat my words on Mississippi aren't you? Got some fine choices there!!!

I thought Jet Pilot was the shortest, but I haven't timed it or checked.

Idiot Wind hits a lot of those categories for me as its angry, sarcastic, even a bit of a song of unrequited love..........

Forever Young ties with Love Minus Zero in the love department. Too many other choices though........

Humor....I lean a bit towards Bob's 115th Dream or Talkin' WW III.

Most memorable??? That's tough............There are a couple that are incredibly beautiful and hold a very special place within me. Bob Dylan's Dream and Lay Down Your Weary Tune are both very special to me.

There are too damn many in each category Hawk. Those are a few picks from me in a couple.

From: Little Hawk

Agreed, Spaw...there are simply too many. But I thought it would be interesting to see what people would say.

Matt - Nice picks! Pretty damn good for a recent convert to Dylan. I'm impressed, though I don't agree with your rating of "Sad-Eyed Lady"...I think it's very beautiful and full of remarkable poetic images. It was about Sarah Dylan, apparently, though Joan Baez apparently thought it was about her (at one time she did, anyway). I wouldn't be surprised if it was about both of them in some degree or another, as well as about Bob himself.

You are dead right about "Suze (The Cough Song)"...that, I believe, is the shortest...if you could call it a song at all.

I think the longest is...SURPRISE!...not "Sad-Eyed Lady", but "Highlands" (off the album "Time Out of Mind"). Then too, it might be "Brownsville Girl", but I still think it's "Highlands".

My vote for least comprehensible is "Yea, Heavy, and a Bottle Of Bread". Hard to say what the hell it's about.

"Golden Loom" is an excellent choice for most mystical. My vote for that one might be "Angelina" or even "Jokerman", but it's a tough choice to be sure.

Can't say the most brilliant lyrics, but a few of my favourites are: "Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine", "It was Rockaday Johnny singing 'Tell your ma, tell your Pa, our loves a gonna grow, wa wa", "I asked him what his name was and how come he didn't drive a truck, he said it was Columbus, and I just said good luck", "I can't even touch the books you've read"

Lost love songs that moved me, Girl of the North Country and Boots of Spanish Leather"

Little Hawk, I think you're right about Highlans being the longest. I love that CD, but I don't often have the patience to Listen to Highlands in it's entirety. Sad Eyed Lady although long holds my attention until the end. I think it's a wonderful song.

Spaw, that is an utterly classic line that my friend Johnny "Death" and I have repeated many times...we are both major Dylan fanatics. Johnny also likes any song with violent death in it for some reason, which is how he got the nickname. He enjoys making bizarre and extremely right wing statements in front of the rest of us folkies, who are mostly liberal to left leaning. Not to worry...he still loves Dylan, so there's hope for him!

Dylan's capacity for humour in his song lyrics has often been underrated, and the "collateral" line is a fine example of that.

How about in "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" when he remarks sarcastically..."I saw you makin' love to him...you forgot to close the garage door. You may think he loves you for your money, but I know what he really loves you for...it's your brand new leopard skin pillbox hat!"

Talk about a wicked putdown! He has a deadly way with words.

Yeah that's a great line 'Spaw.

Little Hawk, I was trying to think of profound Lyrics last night, but I kept reverting back to his humour. Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat, Stuck Inside of Mobile (and like a fool I mixed them..." Grandpa died last week..."), I Shall Be Free, his various Dreams are all very funny songs. I think he came up with these to strike a balance with the very dark material that also showed up on most of his albums.

How about Protest song? Tough one, but in my opinion "With God on Our Side" nudges out "Masters of War".

"It may be the Devil, It may be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve somebody"

Masters of War comes in as a pretty angry one too.

Hawk, I think the sarcastic humor is generally the best and most darkly funny........."You asked me how I was doing. Was that some kind of joke?"......"I know them, they're quite lame. I had to rearrange their faces and give them all another name."

Actually, I believe that "Oh, Sister" was about Sarah Dylan. I may be wrong, but I think it was.

Some Dylan songs about Joan Baez:

Queen Jane Approximately

She Belongs To Me

Visions of Johanna

some references in "I Shall Be Free" (in one verse..."she's a humdinger...folksinger"

And probably a dozen or so others between 1964 and 1966, but who can be sure? Because..."He just walked along alone, with his guilt so well-concealed, and muttered underneath his breath 'nothing is revealed'."

p.s. I believe the lyric is "you will wind up peeking through her keyhole down upon your knees". What a difference one little word can make! Talk about a loaded line...

Jaze - I'm sure that Joan had "Oh Sister" in mind when she wrote some of the lyrics in "Oh, Brother!" (and it's pretty good too). However, I still suspect that "Oh Sister" was about Sarah. On the other hand, it could be about both Sarah and Joan! With Bob, you never know, cos he's good at "keeping things vague" (now who is that quote from?...).

Joan clearly thought that "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" was written for her (and some of the lyrics would certainly suggest it..."with your matchbook songs and your gypsy hymns"), but it seems that it was for Sarah, according to Bob.

Again, who knows? "Nobody ever knew for sure where they were really at".

Rev,

I'm guessing Desire. As mentioned earlier, I just got Biograph and am enjoying just about all of it, with the exception of a Live, rocked up version of Isis. Hate it, won't listen to it again. Really like the original.

Lilly, Rosemary & The Jack of Hearts the worst? One of my favourites. That's what makes horseracing, a difference of opinion.

Matt, please fill us in on what the book had to say about Subterranean Homesick Blues.

Joe Cocker did a pretty neat version of "Catfish" in the seventies.

Then there's always this one

Talkin World-Worn Flea Blues

One time I goed crazy,a dream come to me
thought I's walkin with a world-worn flea
in my dream there's nobody else around
cept an orange in a tree, hangin down
climbed up th trunk highs I could go
but the fruit was outta reach, and I told th flea so
said th flea to me "don't worry yer head
I'll climb up on the branch instead
alls I really need from you is some means of travel
a rock or a shoe or a big chunk o gravel
or anything else that you can find
see I'll sit on it and you can send me flyin"
so down goes I and I walks around
lookin for flea-fliers on th ground
then what should I kick with my stumblin feet
some body dropped their bicycle seat!
well I picked it up and on jumps th flea
and I flung him up in that citrus tree
I said "come on, boy, drop that orange down"
but the flea just laughed sayin "Ain't you a clown!"
He said "I got better things to do
than sit in th dirt eatin lunch with you"
now I don't mind sayin,it made me swear
to watch that flea puttin on airs
and as I start to stomp and steam
thats where i wake up from this crazy dream
now a very wise man once said
all them dreams is just in yer head
but my advice is of a different kind-
you give me half of yer orange, I'll give you half of mine

Hey Steve,

I'm not sure what my issue is with Lily, Rosemary, etc... except that maybe it sounds to me sometimes like Dylan doing a parody of himself, I think there are a few songs that give me that feeling. I love that Biograph - I still have my 5 album set of vinyl that I bought from the Columbia Record and Tape club in the 80s. I think my favorites on that are "Abandoned Love" and "Visions of Johanna."

How about Most Overplayed: Mr Tamborine Man (except for the version on "Live 1966")

Rev,

I'm still new to it, but is Abandoned Love the outtake from Blood On The Tracks.

Love the acoustic Visoions of Johanna.

'Spaw,

Missed your post somehow about "Lay Down Your Weary Tune". I find Bob and a very few others do that from time to time, you'll hear a song a bunch of times, then a line or a phrase will grab you and your're hooked. This song is not yet my favourite tune from Biograph, but it might get me yet. I do like it though.

You got it guys! "Blowin' In The Wind" is the most memorable. The trick with this song is...when you play it, give it some kind of new feel, some kind of different expression. DON'T try to sound like Peter, Paul & Mary doing an instant replay!

Matt- I don't get "simple twist of but" Explain, please.

Yeah, Jokerman is a puzzler, but it's a great song...most mysterious. It remains one of Bob's greatest of all time, I think. "Changing of the Guards" is another great one. I agree that "Handy Dandy" is a pretty wretched lyric.

Hawk, your point on "blowin" is well taken and what can either kill a song or keep it alive. When I began thinking of it as an angry protest, almost a rage (like "when is this shit gonna' end???"), it gave the song a new life for me. Its a style that some don't like (too much PPM influence), but I like doing it that way....it takes all the sappiness away.

Yeah, I heard a very neat live take of the song by Dylan from quite recently. I think it was on some bootleg that my friend Johny Death had of Dylan in concert during 1999 or 2000. Anyway, he did the verses very quietly and then came in strong on the choruses with harmony singers...quite interesting and different. Sort of like a gospel singalong.

I'm thinking that "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" was written about Joan Baez.

So I hate to sound like a broken record (CD), but the live version on Biograph is absolutely magical. I believe it is also the version that is on Live '66.

I always thought Jokerman was a song about Jesus from a point of view of disbelief, but with a strangely sympathetic tone. I've never heard any explanations.

Happiest and most incomprehesible--Santa Fe. If anyone knows the actual words I'd like to see them. Every lyric I've seen is wrong on a word or two, but I can't hear some of the others.

My favorite line in Jack of Hearts is Be careful not to touch the wall, there's a brand new coat of paint. Dylan has the short-story gift for the passing detail that charges everything with reality.

Well I dont know about all the catagories but well I dont even know loads of his songs
Best song though
Has to be I Threw It All Away
but to be honest with you any song that he sings is rotten as he's like the worst singer in the world and I dont even think that it's on purpose(I think he thinks he can sing) any way there you go on that one. This is the kind of question for my Da cos he thinks he's really good and stuff

Okay, well, if you think he thinks he can sing what do you think about the fact that I think he can sing, me being myself a very good singer according to most people? Good singing is based upon a number of things, among which are the ability to express and communicate both the emotion and the idea contained in the lyric in an effective manner. Some people sing on key beautifully, but are incapable of investing the song with any real life. Are they good singers? I don't think so.

Why do so many other good singers like the way Dylan sings? Gotta ask yourself that, son.

well Maw the thing is that even though I am neither a singer nor a person who has given the world beautiful music(apart from my own songs) In my OPINION he just isnt a good singer. If I can appreciate his songwriting ability but not like and enjoy his singing is that a crime?
I enjoy the voice of Mark Knopfler who is in a similar vein to Dylan and has also written some great songs. Both men are rightfully recognised as great writers but neither of them will ever go down in history as great or even good singers. If someone can sing in key beautifully then good for them others cant. No problem there and as for emotion well that goes with out saying only the songwriter can sing their songs the way they should be sang with the right emotion and experssion of their soul, feeling and passion. But it still doesnt make Dylan sound good through these ears.
Final wee point on this matter from me at the concert where sinead got booed off do you honestly think that he was the best performer on stage that night? cos he really was rotten. Or did some people sing his songs better than he did. I know that i have just contradicted my self in this wee sentence and I'm not affraid to admit it but for me he cant sing.
Speak to you later auld yin
Dylan

PS listen to aztec camera and I Threw It All Away and then tell me who sings it better. killermont street.com or something like that.

In my opinion Dylan can sing.

That show was definitely not one of Dylan's better nights. I agree that a number of the other performers at that concert sang far better than he did. On the other hand, I've seen and heard him sing marvelously...on certain nights. Bob is very unpredictable. I can of course understand that you don't like the way he sings. I couldn't stand the way he sang either when I was a teenager, but when I hit 21 all of a sudden I started to love the way he sang. I guess my expectations changed at that point.

I also think Mark Knopfler is a great singer, although he's not what you'd call a singer with a flawlessly on-pitch perfect voice. He's a great singer because he's expressive in the manner that fits the song. Ditto for Dylan.

On the recent CD reissue Two Sides of Dave Van Ronk, it's just called "All Over You." On the original LP, In the Tradition, it was called "If I Had To Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You."
