Lyr/Chords Req: Off the Rails (Garnet Rogers)

Subject: Unknown Stan Rogers? Song. Please Help!
From: Knicke

Hi. I only heard this once, but this little fragment stuck with me. I want very badly to learn the whole song, but only know the tiny part of the chorus:

There's the love you need And there's the love you receive And there's a difference...

Something like that. The last refrain goes:

There's the love you feel And there's the love you give And there's your difference.

Anybody with any leads? Where can I get a recording of this?

Knicke

Title: Off The Rails

He went off the rails in White River Junction
In a roadhouse on the eastern edge of town
Knowing finally that the dream had left him beaten
Sinking shots of booze as fast as they'd go down

They had to help him from the stool where he'd been sitting
He was frozen from the stillness in his heart
I said mister you can't drive in that condition
Here's your jacket, where's your keys, I'll fetch your car

I drove him to his motel across the river
He sat so quietly I though he was asleep
But the moon showed it's pale face through the forest branches
I could see the tears of anger on his cheek

He said, there's the love you need and there's the love you recieve
and there's a difference
And when the love is wrong you're better off alone
It leaves your heart confused and your spirit twisted
And the lonliness can chill you to the bone

I've had it up to here with loving from long distance
She's had too many nights of waiting home alone
Too many ultimatums, too much blind resistance
Too much anger, too much silence on the phone

He said, there's the love you need and there's the love you recieve
And there's a difference
And when the love is wrong you're better off alone
It leaves your heart confused and your spirit twisted
And the lonliness can chill you to the bone

He straightened up and said I thank you for your trouble
As I parked his car benieth the motle light He said how will you get home, you're miles from nowhere
It's not far I said, I like to walk at night

I said there's the love you feel and there's the love you give
And there's your difference
And when the love you give falls short of what you feel
Words stick in your throat and leave you choking
And what's in your heart is what you best conceal

And so I left him in that motel in New Hampshire
With the TV on, the sound turned down to low
Seeking answers in the shadows on the ceiling
Come tomorrow noon, he'll pack it up and go

I said there's the love you feel and there's the love you give
And there's your difference
And when the love you give falls short of what you feel
Words stick in your throat and leave you choking
And what's in your heart is what you besst conceal

Good bit of song that... if you really need an MP3 of it, I'll code one up if ya give me and email addy to mail it to... and if you agree to buy the CD as soon as you have the chance... Actually I'm probably gonna see Garnet at the Ark in Ann Arbour next week....

Or you could order it from his mom...

Yes, please! Could you tell me what other songs are on that CD? I'll either buy that one or another one that I have in mind...

Thanks for the lyrics!

Vote number three -- get the CD. Anyone who can listen to "Small Victory" without choking up has taken a wrong turn somewhere and needs a Compassion Check.

I learned "Small Victory" to sing at family gatherings because a couple of my sisters are super-horsie and I thought it would make them cry, but it makes me cry too...

"Off the Rails" is a great song, but doesn't work for me personally to learn, which is a darn shame, because we usually do an outdoor concert-in-the-park in White River Junction, each of the last 2 or 3 summers.

Peter.

I don't understand MC... What do you mean there?

Hard to articulate any better than that.

There are a great, great many songs that I don't like; and a smaller, but still large, number of songs that I like, and steal with gusto, vigor, and no shame at all. (Actually, I do pay royalties when I record them, but I only record a few). There are also some songs that I do like, but that still aren't my kind of song as far as singing them myself. I'm not sure what the criterion is. Part of it is that I like a fairly strong rhythm, and that song is more freeform. But there's more to it than that, but I'm not sure what it is.

Peter.

Dang... pemature posting! Gotta hate it...

What I was gonna say is that I understand what yer saying, but what I tend to do in that case is learn the song anyway, and play with it till I go blond... no! I mean play with it until it changes to fit my 'style' (what ever the hell THAT is?!?!) Eventually it happens...

Clinton,

Yes! One of the things that floored me last year at the Okemah Woody Guthrie weekend were the ways people worked up his songs. I'd mostly heard them in folky arrangements ranging from single performer to jug band, but some of those guys were rockin' last year! And it was great! Okay, maybe it won't work with every song out there, every way possible, but a song that admits to only one interpretation...well, I don't think Garnet Rogers has done any like that.

I'm hard pressed to think of a better way to do Garnet's "Night Drive"... any of the covers I've heard of it have been pretty lame... mine included!

LOL!!
