After lunch, we were looking at an apartment today, for a place that is going to be available in april in my building. So they all got to meet my landlord too. Anyway, the apartment is beautiful, and I hope we can get it or something even better! |

There was a pretty big scandal in Orillia around that election and flattop's toenail collection. It seems that flattop wasn't just collecting his own toenails. He was secretly collecting the toenails of Orillia's most prominent citizens. He would bribe the household staff of his intended victims, and they would collect the toenails from the trash containers. While examining the toenails from one of his opponents in the election, flattop discovered that the opponent had a particularly vicious form of toenail fungus. He decided to use this information in a smear campaign against the opponent. What flattop didn't realise is that public sympathy would go against that type of campaign, and the opponent got the sympathy vote, which equalled roughly 95% of the population of Orillia. It was a very unfortunate situation all around, and effectively ended flattop's political career. |

Sorry about your pepper spray, I told you to switch labels with a vaginal deodorant spray can; nobody would have messed with it. During the riots I glued my mace cannister with a hair spray label, and used it to touch up their "do's" prior to the arrest photographs. One of the funniest fatalities I ever investigated was the parking garage valet who was driving some gal's convertable up to the top floor of the five story building. He spotted a cannister hanging off her key chain, and apparently thought it was breath spray. One squirt and he drove off the third floor. He almost buried it in a nextdoor office building. He barely can send me email, much less find the Mudcat site. I am showing him the way when time permits.The computer offers us a break from banging tunes. The Pharmacy expanded to the office building on the corner,it opens up to a middle room where the performance area is located, an oak bar was added with a seperate street entrance. I was invited to the after hours private opening January 23. They have a full stocked bar. Public opening was last weekend.The pub is the nicest in town. The Yellow Brick has nothing to compare. Music featured will be jazz and blues. Who knows, maybe they will be open to some wild celtic music. I know just the group. |

From: flattop Rick Fielding Plays Crop Circle Country Friday night, September 15th, Rick Fielding delivered an astounding performance at Orillia's fair grounds. The concert was a Mariposa Festival volunteer thank you party combined with an Orillia Folks Society monthly concert. One of the organizers, Ronda, told me that she had worried that the room might be too cold but Rick rapidly warmed up both the room and the audience. He started out with a song about the Titanic. Waves of 12 string notes washed out over the audience. It was a warm wave that may have lifted the wreck a few feet off the Atlantic floor. No one ran for lifeboats. No one drowned. Instead folks started to sing along. Rick made everyone feel comfortable and happy, like we were all friends who had known him for years. We made up a fair size crowd and probably over ninety percent of us sang along to many of his songs. We even sang on the ones where we didn't have a clue about the words or the tune. Perhaps we shouldn't have but Rick's music, rhythms, enthusiasm and warmth were all highly contagious Rick seemed to be enjoying himself too. He shared many stories about his childhood, his life (even his life as a drywaller) and his songs. He played song that we've known for years like San Francisco Bay Blues, tunes that only serious traditionalists would know and songs that he's written from a heart drenched with traditional music echoes. Rick played amazing guitar. Members of the Orillia Folk Society who were sitting close to me hooted and hollered all night long. Mariposa people from Toronto and elsewhere were also struck with spontaneous outbursts. These flare-ups started before any of us had time to do any serious drinking, so it was from the heart, not from the bottle. Rick was damn good. Each time he started one of his astonishing guitar techniques the audience would howl and roar. I loved that twelve-string sound that he gets. And what a range of styles and music - Travis picking, walking chords with bass and melody runs, rapidly changing chords patterns, rhythmic finger patterns on guitars and autoharp that you would only expect from a great drummer beating on her snare, wild arpeggios with fingerpicks and flatpicks. Even when he strummed Rick played intricate chord patterns like a boom on the bass followed by a chuga-chuga-chum on the high strings. Now we know why half the people in southern Ontario are taking guitar lessons at Fielding's or wish they were. |

The Pharmacy tore out the wall between it and the old Reunion bar that became the Ultraprise part of Huskey Labs before the dot-coms went south. They replaced the bar and did a sort of Pharmacy extention into the new area (i.e. excellent food at the upper end of the price range). The musical groups playing so far are somewhat pedestrian, but I hope to see Sharon playing there soon. (For those who don't know, Sharon Hall is regarded by most musicians in the DC area to be the Best Second Fiddle on the Planet - we don't know who first is, but if she backs 'em up, she makes 'em sound better.) Still no sign of your accordion; if you find out a prospective delivery date, let me know so I can leave appropriate death threats for the Fed Ex man. (As in "Don't leave it here... I know it looks like a Fed Ex cardboard box, but it smells like an accordion.) The lesbian next door just moved out, so you won't have to listen to Lezzie Lust through the bathroom vents anymore. Sometimes I just don't want to play, but it was scheduled 3 months ago, so I dragged myself down there and did it. Apparently, according to several people I did a good job anyway, despite my lousy mood. I guess I can still pull the rabbit out of the hat when I have to. All in all it was an okay gig, I suppose, and I got to see Clayton Denwood play his stuff and it was very good. Jen & Eric were also excellent, as always. I am more looking forward to going to see Rick Fielding in Newmarket this coming Friday. I'd rather listen than play right now. - LH

The Scottish dance was a long way to go (Greenbelt, just down from your folks) but well worth the trouble. That Scottish dancing is just incredible; sort of corps de ballet in kilts and long dresses. I think I'm the first person to ever show up at an Open Scottish Band with a long neck and a 6-string banjo, prepared to play Strathspeys. I thought it worked well and frankly got a lot of compliments and an invitation to play the second half in the front row. It was at this point we brought it all home to these folks. They were playing a dance set called the Reel of the 51st Highland Division, and broke into a piece called the Drunken Piper. Carol, it was like putting the minor sections of Groweling Old Man, Grumbling Old Woman together with Kitchen Maid. I caught on immediately and went to the long neck. Steve Hickman and I had a ball, "playing through" and the Scots fiddlers (about 10, from the local Scottish Fiddle Club) held up their end of the bargain. We had two recalls and only stopped when the dance master pointed out to the crowd that they wouldn't get to the waltzes if we didn't move on. Liz said later that she'd never heard an arrangement like that. I told her to call it "The Reel of the 51st Highland Division Supported in the Assualt By The 3rd Marines". I believe Liz has had her funny bone surgically removed... Anyhow, I've got another clogging piece for Kim and Jan, and Rock Candy. Got to go, let me know about the delivery date for the accordion. |

The first set was by a few nice young people, a cool drum, and two guitars. There was some AWESOME classical guitar, including a version of "Canon in D" that is now my absolute favorite! (It wasn't boring... like most of the versions I've heard.) A beautiful, jazzed-up "Autumn Leaves" that was great, too. Hawk disappeared into the art gallery for a while, and then Larry the Luthier came and told me that Hawk was plotting something with harmonica and mandolin. I wondered what Hawk was going to be doing with a mandolin, as he only knows three chords on that instrument, but thankfully, Rick was the one who played the mandolin. Very well, too. Is there any stringed instrument that Rick can't play? Wow! Rick played a very good, and entertaining set, but I'll let someone who knows more about folk music than I do report on that. Nice to meet both Rick and Heather, though, and we'll be seeing you again! ~*sirepseh*~ |
