(Sorry, I'd slipped this into the "What Is Country" thread and then realized this really should have its own separate thread.)

Story here.

This one truly saddens me........a wonderful family and a loving woman with a heart unsurpassed in caring and kindness. She and Roy were of course a big part of my childhood and the world becomes a little less bright just knowing she is gone. The two of them created a beautiful family that met its adversities head on and together.

A little while back her name came up on another thread when we found this guitar.

Yeah.........Happy Trails Dale......and Thank You.

Spaw

Only slightly connected to ths thread, it has to do with "her song", Happy Trails.

When I was in the Navy I was stationed on an old destroyer, USS Compton, operating out of Boston. We spent a lot of time tied up to a destroyer tender, the USS Grand Canyon, in Newport, Rhode Island. Legend had it that the Grand Canyon was mired in a shoal of her own cast off refuse and could never again be moved.

But then, as happens with legends, she left port. We all stood on the fantail of the Compton to watch the immovable monolith get under way and as she slid past us we sang Happy Trails to her. They say she was headed for Viet Nam.

in the long gone by, i wished dale would be my mother. i saw myself sitting on the little pony, rideing trail with roy and herself. singing the songs and just being "the kid". "happy trails" my youthful anthem. decked in rinestones and happily waveing to all my friends on the other side of the camera. still want to in fact.

Oh dear, Dale and Buttermilk filled my childhood dreams. Until we meet again......

It probably is not quite appropriate on Dale's thread but something Spaw said above reminded me of childhood lost and the following poem by my brother

Death of Roy Rogers

Just as well…he'd hate it now
He had simple solutions for a world wanting to go bad
But they don't work in these times of disintegration.
Jesus, the bad guys are wearing white, quoting scripture,
And good guys can be bought for a price
And everyone shoots to kill….
But when Roy brought 'em down
He just winged em and they knew better….
Knew the code of the west.
Nowadays ya gotta kill 'em
Or else they just get smarter….
Or get lawyers who already are,
And they sue ya…
Jesus Roy, they're killing widows and orphans
From boardrooms while drinkin' lattes and keepin' tabs on
Their stocks…
And they don't use guns no more, they use computers…
Ctrl, alt, delete…."The hostiles are takin' over!"
The bad guys….
Yeah…Roy and Trigger..
They'd hate it now.

On the bright side, from what I can gather, Roy and Dale left a lot of love.

Ah, no! I'm really sorry to hear this. I loved Roy and Dale. About 5 years ago, I did a gig in California in Fort Irwin out in the desert. The next day I went to the Roy Rogers Museum in Victorville, something I'd always wanted to do. I got there really early in the morning, about 9:30 or so, before the tour buses pull up, and went in. There were about 4 other people in the place at that hour - English folks who also liked ol' Roy and Dale.

We started walking around, enjoying the exhibits, discussing Roy's music and movies and TV show, when we stopped to look at an exhibit describing Roy and Dale's trip to Britain in the early 50's. They had appeared at the Hippodrome in Belfast (my home town), and I was looking at that picture when a voice behind me said: "Roy and I really enjoyed our time in Ireland and England."

Well, we turned round and there was Dale. She introduced herself, and we just gaped in awe as she asked our names and shook our hands. Then she led us on a private tour of the museum, and described in detail all that we were seeing. And she answered all our questions. She was one of the most gracious ladies it's ever been my pleasure to meet and I have tears in my eyes right now, just thinking of that special time when she let 5 strangers into her world for a brief but spellbinding hour.

Happy Trails, Dale, and say "Howdy" to Roy for me.

Oh God! Why did I do this? Land here after listening to and feeling the loss of a fellow Mudcatter in Steve Latimer's thread? February has to be the cruelest month, taking many people we love. This week two of my union brothers were taken at Bath Iron Works up here in Maine. Now the news of an icon of my childhood passing, Dale Evens, only confirms the fact that this month of love was chosen as the time, so we would remember. wdyat12

Even though Roy and Dale were quite before my time, I was beyond consolation when he died, and even now I am surprised that Dale survived him by this long. I cannot hear them singing Happy Trails without bursting into tears. Mostly because there is nobody to replace them...

WDY,
Celebrating their lives makes mourning their deaths easier. Dale Evans was one of those rare heroines offered to young girls in the 30s, 40s, and 50s who managed to satisfy the stereotype of the times while offering us a taste of freedom, independence, strength. A great lady. And the good guys always won - she wouldn't tolerate any less.

I had the great joy of getting to shake hands with Roy when I was 5 years old and was always jealous of Dale because she meant that I could never grow up and marry Roy. Her passing is very sad indeed and I still refuse to grow up since I still can't marry Roy.

Atleast they are now happily together again.

Forever Child,

Katcina

Out of town yesterday so I'm late in picking this thread up. Heard the news on the radio half way up the M50 and immediately started singing "Happy Trails".
Just reading these posts has made my keyboard all wet
Happy Trails Dale
